District Application Of Hand Held Data Recorder Technology, Stuart Styles, Charles M. Burt
District Application Of Hand Held Data Recorder Technology, Stuart Styles, Charles M. Burt
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
A hand held data recorder (HHDR) enables a district to collect field data in a quick and virtually error-free manner. These units can be used to scan bar code location/equipment identifiers or the operator can manually key in this information followed by the current data. Some HHDRs can be programmed with error checking routines that prompt the operator when an entry is inconsistent with regards to the previous reading from that location. Each entry includes a time and date stamp. When the operator has collected all of the data for the day or for a route, the data is downloaded …
Simple, Portable Water Level Monitoring Package, Charles M. Burt, Stuart Styles
Simple, Portable Water Level Monitoring Package, Charles M. Burt, Stuart Styles
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
Electronic water level sensing equipment is becoming increasingly important for the implementation of water conservation programs in irrigation districts. A need has risen for information on costs, advantages/disadvantages, required support equipment, and required maintenance for the various options. For this reason, the Water Conservation Office of the Mid-Pacific Region of the USBR contracted with the Cal Poly ITRC to conduct a study on water level sensors and dataloggers and to produce a report.
One application covered in the water level sensor and datalogger report is the need to have a simple, portable water level monitoring package. This paper supplements the …

Determining The Source Of Individuals: Multilocus Genotyping In Nonequilibrium Population Genetics, Neil Davies, Francis X. Villablanca, George K. Roderick
Determining The Source Of Individuals: Multilocus Genotyping In Nonequilibrium Population Genetics, Neil Davies, Francis X. Villablanca, George K. Roderick
Biological Sciences
Recently founded populations represent an enormous challenge for genetic analysis: new populations are often genetically impoverished, making it hard to find sufficiently variable markers, and what little variation is present tends to be ancestral, rendering phylogenetic methods inappropriate. Recently, novel genetic markers and new statistical analyses have made multilocus genotyping an invaluable tool in the fledgling field of nonequilibrium population genetics. Such advances are not of mere academic interest but address questions of great economic, medical and conservation significance.
Einstein's Theory Of Theories And Types Of Theoretical Explanation, Francisco Flores
Einstein's Theory Of Theories And Types Of Theoretical Explanation, Francisco Flores
Philosophy
In this paper I draw on Einstein's distinction between “principle” and “constructive” theories to isolate two levels of physical theory that can be found in both classical and (special) relativistic physics. I then argue that when we focus on theoretical explanations in physics, i.e. explanations of physical laws, the two leading views on explanation, Salmon's “bottom-up” view and Kitcher's “top-down” view, accurately describe theoretical explanations for a given level of theory. I arrive at this conclusion through an analysis of explanations of mass—energy equivalence in special relativity.

Goal Problems In Gambling Theory, Theodore P. Hill
Goal Problems In Gambling Theory, Theodore P. Hill
Research Scholars in Residence
A short introduction to goal problems in abstract gambling theory is given, along with statements of some of the main theorems and a number of examples, open problems and references. Emphasis is on the finite-state, countably-additive setting with such classical objectives as reaching a goal, hitting a goal infinitely often, staying in the goal, and maximizing the average time spent at a goal.
History Of The Forum On Physics And Society, David W. Hafemeister
History Of The Forum On Physics And Society, David W. Hafemeister
Physics
Physics is a major component of many of society's difficult issues: nuclear arms and their proliferation, energy shortages and energy impacts, climate change and technical innovation. Because physics principles underlie so many of these societal issues and because physics offers a way to quantify some aspects of them, members of the American Physical Society (APS) should be encouraged to understand, analyze and debate them. That's precisely why APS members formed the Forum on Physics and Society (FPS). To those of us who have been long involved in FPS affairs, it seems but yesterday that we attended the organizing meeting at …
Dietary Intake And Gallbladder Disease: A Review, Marilyn Tseng, James E. Everhart, Robert S. Sandler
Dietary Intake And Gallbladder Disease: A Review, Marilyn Tseng, James E. Everhart, Robert S. Sandler
Kinesiology and Public Health
Objective: Dietary intake has long been looked upon as a potentially modifiable risk factor for gallbladder disease (GBD), here defined as either having gallstones or having had surgery for gallstones. This paper reviews the epidemiological evidence for an association between dietary intake and GBD, focusing on six dietary factors that have received the most attention in studies in this area: energy intake, fatty acids, cholesterol, carbohydrates and fibre, calcium and alcohol. The objectives of this review are to evaluate the potential usefulness of altering the diet to prevent GBD and to consider future research in this area. Design: We reviewed …

Interaction Of Blood Pressure And Ldl Cholesterol In Early Atherosclerosis. The Los Angeles Atherosclerosis Study, Ping Sun, Kathleen M. Dwyer, Noel Bairey Merz, Wei Sun, Lisa M. Nicholson, Cheryl Nordstrom, James H. Dwyer
Food Science and Nutrition
Background. The response to injury model of atherosclerosis has been investigated in animal models but not in epidemiologic studies. Relations between LDL cholesterol and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) within levels of SBP provide a test of this model. Methods. Data are from a longitudinal study of 573 randomly sampled asymptomatic employees of a large company aged 40-60 years. IMT and change in IMT over 18 months (8IMT) were determined sonographically in the common carotid artery. 497 subjects were available for cross-sectional analysis. To investigate interactive effects of SBP and serum LDL on IMT, linear slopes (j±SE in mm/mmol/L) of IMT …
Hacia Una Estética Del Análisis De Códigos Poéticos, William Martínez
Hacia Una Estética Del Análisis De Códigos Poéticos, William Martínez
World Languages and Cultures

A Compensated Acoustic Actuator For Systems With Strong Dynamic Pressure Coupling, Charles Birdsong, Clark J. Radcliffe
A Compensated Acoustic Actuator For Systems With Strong Dynamic Pressure Coupling, Charles Birdsong, Clark J. Radcliffe
Mechanical Engineering
This study improves the performance of a previously developed acoustic actuator in the presence of an acoustic duct system with strong pressure coupling. The speaker dynamics and the acoustic duct dynamics are first modeled separately. The two systems are then coupled, and the resulting system is modeled. A velocity sensor is developed and used in feedback compensation. The resulting speaker system has minimal magnitude and phase variation over a 20–200 Hz bandwidth. These conclusions are verified through experimental results.

Optimal Stimulus Electrode Dipole Orientation, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin
Optimal Stimulus Electrode Dipole Orientation, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin
Biomedical Engineering
The elicited M-Wave that results from the surface stimulation of the median nerve is highly dependent upon the geometric orientation of the stimulus electrode dipole. This phenomenon could make standardization of M-Wave measurements between tests performed on a single subject problematic. We present an experimental paradigm that illustrates this variability in terms of an estimate of the slope of the M-Wave peak potential versus stimulus current amplitude and the minimum stimulus current required to consistently elicit a minimal response. The design of an automated instrument for selecting the optimal stimulus electrode dipole orientation based on the electrode orientation experiment is …
The Effects Of Testing Methods On The Flexural Fatigue Life Of Human Cortical Bone, L. V. Griffin, J. C. Gibeling, R. B. Martin, V. A. Gibson, S. M. Stover
The Effects Of Testing Methods On The Flexural Fatigue Life Of Human Cortical Bone, L. V. Griffin, J. C. Gibeling, R. B. Martin, V. A. Gibson, S. M. Stover
Biomedical Engineering
A flexural model of four-point bending fatigue that has been experimentally validated for human cortical bone under load control was used to determine how load and displacement control testing affects the fatigue behavior of human cortical bone in three-point and symmetric four-point bending. Under load control, it was predicted that three-point bending produced no significant differences in fatigue life when compared to four-point bending. However, three-point bending produced less stiffness loss with increasing cycles than four-point bending. In four-point bending, displacement control was predicted to produce about one and a half orders of magnitude greater fatigue life when compared to …
Problems Of Irrigation In Developing Countries, Phillip Z. Kirpich, Dorota Z. Haman, Stuart W. Styles
Problems Of Irrigation In Developing Countries, Phillip Z. Kirpich, Dorota Z. Haman, Stuart W. Styles
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
This paper describes the crucial importance of irrigated agriculture to developing countries and to the world as a whole. This is followed by a summary of key problems that restrict and diminish the benefits of irrigated agriculture. Solution of these problems will above all require a holistic approach and will require changes in the institutions involved. These institutions include those of the developing countries, of the developed countries that provide aid, and of the international financing and technical-assistance agencies. Engineers in the developed countries have had, and will continue to have, a leading role but will need some redirection. ASCE …
Leading Charm In Hadron-Nucleus Interactions In The Intrinsic Charm Model, Thomas D. Gutierrez, R. Vogt
Leading Charm In Hadron-Nucleus Interactions In The Intrinsic Charm Model, Thomas D. Gutierrez, R. Vogt
Physics
Leading charm hadrons produced in hadron-nucleus interactions cannot be adequately described within the parton fusion model. Recent results on charm baryon production in ∑-A interactions at 330 GeV with the WA89 detector disagree with fusion predictions. Intrinsic heavy quark pairs in the ∑- (dds) wavefunction provide a simple mechanism for producing fast charm hadrons. We calculate leading charm baryon production from ∑-, ∏- and p projectiles in a two component model combining parton fusion with intrinsic charm. Final state D-, ∑ncn0, ≡ncn+, and ∧ncn+ dσ/dxnF …
On The Basic Representation Theorem For Convex Domination Of Measures, J. Elton, Theodore P. Hill
On The Basic Representation Theorem For Convex Domination Of Measures, J. Elton, Theodore P. Hill
Research Scholars in Residence
A direct, constructive proof is given for the basic representation theorem for convex domination of measures. The proof is given in the finitistic case (purely atomic measures with a finite number of atoms), and a simple argument is then given to extend this result to the general case, including both probability measures and finite Borel measures on infinite-dimensional spaces. The infinite-dimensional case follows quickly from the finite-dimensional case with the use of the approximation property.

Magnetic Microstructure Of Magnetotactic Bacteria By Electron Holography, Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski, Martha R. Mccartney, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Mihály Pósfai, Peter R. Buseck
Physics
Off-axis electron holography in the transmission electron microscope was used to correlate the physical and magnetic microstructure of magnetite nanocrystals in magnetotactic bacteria. The magnetite crystals were all single magnetic domains, and the magnetization directions of small superparamagnetic crystals were constrained by magnetic interactions with larger crystals in the chains. Shape anisotropy was found to dominate magnetocrystalline anisotropy in elongated crystals. A coercive field between 300 and 450 oersted was determined for one chain.
