An Efficient Finite Difference Time Domain (Fdtd) Technique For Modeling A Reflector Antenna System With Partial Circular Symmetry, Dean Arakaki, Wenhua Yu, Raj Mittra Jul 1999

An Efficient Finite Difference Time Domain (Fdtd) Technique For Modeling A Reflector Antenna System With Partial Circular Symmetry, Dean Arakaki, Wenhua Yu, Raj Mittra

Electrical Engineering

This paper presents an efficient method for solving a large body scattering problem, viz., a paraboloidal reflector antenna system with only partial circular symmetry. The asymmetry in the system is introduced by two factors, viz., the microstrip feed and an inhomogeneous radome. The paper presents a novel approach, based on the reciprocity principle and the “equivalent aperture” theory, to handle the asymmetry problem and still take advantage of the circular symmetry of the large paraboloid of revolution to render the problem manageable

Asymmetric Grading Error And Adverse Selection: Lemons In The California Prune Industry, Jennifer S. James, James A. Chalfant, Nathalie Lavoie, Richard J. Sexton Jul 1999

Asymmetric Grading Error And Adverse Selection: Lemons In The California Prune Industry, Jennifer S. James, James A. Chalfant, Nathalie Lavoie, Richard J. Sexton

Agribusiness

Grading systems are often introduced to address the classic adverse selection problem associated with asymmetric information about product quality. However, grades are rarely measured perfectly, and adverse selection outcomes may persist due to grading error. We study the effects of errors in grading, focusing on asymmetric grading errors-namely when low-quality product can erroneously be classified as high quality, but not vice versa. In a conceptual model, we show the effects of asymmetric grading errors on returns to producers. Application to the California prune industry shows that grading errors reduce incentives to produce more valuable, larger prunes.

Diversity Of Microorganisms Isolated From Amber, C. L. Greenblatt, A. Davis, B. G. Clement, Christopher Kitts, T. Cox, Raul J. Cano Jul 1999

Diversity Of Microorganisms Isolated From Amber, C. L. Greenblatt, A. Davis, B. G. Clement, Christopher Kitts, T. Cox, Raul J. Cano

Biological Sciences

Claims that organisms can be cultured from amber, if substantiated, would be significant contributions to our understanding of the evolution, tenacity, and potential spread of life. Three reports on the isolation of organisms from amber have been published. Cano and Borucki recently reported the isolation of Bacillus sphaericus and Lambert et al. have described a new species designated Staphylococcus succinus from 25–40 million year old Dominican amber. These characterized organisms were phylogenetically distant from extant relatives and the Staphylococcus sp. sufficiently far removed from other extant staphylococci to be considered a new species. Here we report the culture of bacteria …

Liming Of Vineyard Soils, Thomas J. Rice Jul 1999

Liming Of Vineyard Soils, Thomas J. Rice

Earth and Soil Sciences

Liming vineyard soils to increase soil pH and raise calcium levels has been practiced for centuries in the humid areas of the world where soils tend to be more acid. Today, liming is increasingly practiced in the semiarid central coast regions of California, where liming of vineyards was unheard of even a decade ago.
Past agricultural practices, such as the addition of sulfur, acid-forming nitrogen fertilizers, and organic soil amendments, have caused soil acidification. Previously, most of these lands were either open space, range lands, or planted to grain crops.
To avoid unnecessary expense and protect the soil from environmental …

Neural Networks And Structured Knowledge: Knowledge Representation And Reasoning, Franz J. Kurfess

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This collection of articles is the first of two parts of a special issue on "Neural Networks and Structured Knowledge." The contributions to the first part shed some light on the issues of knowledge representation and reasoning with neural networks. Their scope ranges from formal models for mapping discrete structures like graphs or logical formulae onto different types of neural networks, to the construction of practical systems for various types of reasoning. In the second part to follow, the emphasis will be on the extraction of knowledge from neural networks, and on applications of neural networks and structured knowledge to …

Repair Optimization Of Highway Bridges Using System Reliability Approach, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol Jul 1999

Repair Optimization Of Highway Bridges Using System Reliability Approach, Allen C. Estes, Dan M. Frangopol

Architectural Engineering

As reliability based methods gain increased acceptance, there is greater opportunity to use scarce resources more efficiently while maintaining a prescribed level of reliability of a structure throughout its service life. The goal is to provide management decisions that will balance lifetime system reliability and expected life-cycle cost in an optimal manner. This study proposes a system reliability approach for optimizing the lifetime repair strategy for highway bridges. The approach is demonstrated using an existing Colorado State highway bridge. The bridge is modeled as a series-parallel combination of failure modes, and the reliability of the overall bridge system is computed …

The Effect Of Stimulus Current Pulse Width On Nerve Fiber Size Recruitment Patterns, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin Jul 1999

The Effect Of Stimulus Current Pulse Width On Nerve Fiber Size Recruitment Patterns, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin

Biomedical Engineering

There have been theoretical studies presented that postulate a change in the stimulus current amplitude required to recruit nerve fibers with different stimulus current pulse widths. Based on these theoretical predictions, it has been suggested that the stimulus pulse width parameter may be used to selectively recruit fibers of different sizes and that this selectivity should increase with increasing distance from the stimulus electrode. In this paper, a simulation study of the recruitment patterns of a population of motor nerve fibers with a histologically accurate fiber diameter distribution is presented. Nerve fiber excitation simulations coupled with a time varying field …

In Vivo Electrical Stimulation Of Motor Nerves, Robert B. Szlavik Jul 1999

In Vivo Electrical Stimulation Of Motor Nerves, Robert B. Szlavik

Biomedical Engineering

Stimulus waveform parameters and stimulation protocols are fundamental to the use of electrical stimulation in medical applications. This thesis presents new simulation and experimental procedures that for the first time can quantify the effects on nerve fiber recruitment patterns of variable stimulus waveform parameters, such as pulse width and changes in the stimulation protocol with respect to electrode orientation. The study of the effect of variable electrical stimulus waveform parameters and stimulation protocols is important from the perspective of therapeutic and diagnostic medicine. Variations in the stimulus waveform such as stimulus pulse width have been shown to offer some promise …

Spectral Indications Of Unexpected Contributors To Atmospheric Co2 Variability?, Gary B. Hughes, Robert Gigengack, Haralambos N. Kritikos Jun 1999

Spectral Indications Of Unexpected Contributors To Atmospheric Co2 Variability?, Gary B. Hughes, Robert Gigengack, Haralambos N. Kritikos

Statistics

The frequency spectrum of Northern Hemisphere atmospheric CO2 concentration shows strong periodicities at 6.2, 1.0 and 0.5 years. The 6.2 year cyclicity has been attributed to non-linear interactions between the annual cycle and the atmospheric pole tide. The yearly signal is linked to terrestrial photosynthesis; phase analysis shows that annual CO2 minima occur at a lag of approximately 85 days from insolation maxima. Variations in the nominal yearly period occur during times of anomalous anthropogenic CO2 production. Periodicity at 6 months represents a deviation of the yearly signal from an annual sinusoid. If the yearly signal is …

Electroluminescent Illumination System, Dirk J. Broer, David Braun, Antonius H.J. Venhuizen, Christianne R.M. De Witz Jun 1999

Electroluminescent Illumination System, Dirk J. Broer, David Braun, Antonius H.J. Venhuizen, Christianne R.M. De Witz

Electrical Engineering

An illumination system has an active layer which includes an electroluminescent material, the active layer being located between an optically transparent electrode layer and a reflective electrode layer. A reflective polarizer is present at a side of the transparent electrode layer facing away from the active layer. A sub-beam incident on the polarizer and having an unwanted polarization is reflected back to the active layer, where it is again partially depolarized to recover a component having the desired state of polarization. The invention also relates to a flat-panel picture display device which includes such an illumination system.

Environmental Applications Of Gps, Samuel A. Vigil, Dora Zueck Jun 1999

Environmental Applications Of Gps, Samuel A. Vigil, Dora Zueck

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The use of the Global Positioning System (GPS) has revolutionized air travel, ocean navigation, land navigation, and the collection of environmental data. Although a basic civilian GPS receiver can be purchased for as little as $100, the receiver is only the tip of a 12 billion dollar iceberg! This paper will discuss the history and basic operation of the Global Positioning System, a satellite-based precision positioning and timing service developed and operated by the Department of Defense. It will also describe the accuracy limitations of the civil GPS service and how accuracy can be enhanced by the use of differential …

Application Of Noise Control In Environmental Engineering Education, Harold M. Cota, Kristy Grace Jun 1999

Application Of Noise Control In Environmental Engineering Education, Harold M. Cota, Kristy Grace

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Noise control is both a factor in the health and safety of those in the workplace and in the annoyance and interference of the quality of life at home. This falls squarely in the realm of the Environmental Engineering Profession. Noise, its effects and control, is an important element of a few Graduate Environmental Engineering Programs, but it does not have a role in most undergraduate programs. One objective of this paper is to demonstrate that noise is an issue needing to be addressed in Environmental Engineering Programs and to suggest that making it a requirement at the undergraduate level …

Industrial Engineering Made Simple, Deena Daggett, Sema E. Alptekin Jun 1999

Industrial Engineering Made Simple, Deena Daggett, Sema E. Alptekin

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Many high school students these days do not quickly recognize or identify Industrial Engineering (IE) procedures, practices, and products. Recruitment of qualified students into IE programs requires continuous planning, publicizing, and networking. Traditional recruitment efforts have included high school visits, brochures & flyers, and university-sponsored workshops. However, these techniques have only achieved mediocre success. Currently, a need exists for new promotional materials that utilize visual tools and provide a “hands-on” approach. We have developed several exercises that successfully introduce IE. Two such exercises are explained in this paper. The first exercise demonstrates the differences between Assembly line and Cellular Manufacturing …
