The Effect Of Xenon Pulsed-Light Technology On Biofilm Adhered To Stainless Steel Surfaces, Stephanie Jacquez Mar 2016

The Effect Of Xenon Pulsed-Light Technology On Biofilm Adhered To Stainless Steel Surfaces, Stephanie Jacquez

Master's Theses

In food processing, inadequate surface sanitation procedures lead to the formation of biofilms in which bacteria attach and aggregate in a hydrated polymeric matrix of their own synthesis. Formation of these sessile communities and their inherent resistance to existing sanitation procedures and agents are at the root of the risk of bacterial infections for consumers. Due to this existing problem, an effective method for reducing biofilm formation in dairy processing equipment is necessary for dairy products processing. Ultraviolet Pulsed light Technology has shown a positive effect in eliminating microorganism populations on food products. The objective of this work is to …

Hollywood’S Vietnam: How Critics And Audiences Responded To The Vietnam War Genre, Jennifer Freilach

History

This four part essay takes a comprehensive look at articles published in the Los Angeles Times and New York Times to determine how and why critics reviewed essential films about the Vietnam War. It thereby highlights the trends that emerged in their reaction to them. The first section analyzes critics’ response to Coming Home (1978). As the first major film with direct reference to Vietnam, Coming Home posed a unique problem for film critics. The second section analyzes the second major film about Vietnam, The Deer Hunter (1978). The majority of newspaper critics defended Cimino’s epic against negative claims that …

Multi-Axis Machining Project Development, Ryan Patrick Blodgett, Andre Peter Rivera Mar 2016

Multi-Axis Machining Project Development, Ryan Patrick Blodgett, Andre Peter Rivera

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Multi-axis milling is a manufacturing material removal process in which computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools cut away excess material through movement in four or more axes. Compared to traditional three-axis machining, multi-axis machining greatly increases the capability and accuracy of the CNC machining processes by reducing the amount of operations required to completely machine a part. Currently, the Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department at Cal Poly lacks an advanced CNC class that incorporates fourth and fifth axis CNC machining in the curriculum. This report describes the process behind creating a project for such a class. The class will demonstrate the …

The Archaeology Of Fish And Fishing On The Central Coast Of California: The Case For An Under-Exploited Resource, Terry L. Jones, Kenneth W. Gobalet, Brian F. Codding

Social Sciences

Decades of systematic archaeological investigations highlight the importance of fish and fishing for prehistoric people along the central coast of California, but to date temporal and spatial trends remain unsynthesized. An evaluation of 202,177 fish remains from 86 sites on the central coast of California yielded a sample of 75,532 NISP from temporally and methodologically controlled contexts. Seventy-nine temporal components demonstrate a 10,000-year history of fishing within estuaries, along the open rocky coast, and on the Monterey Peninsula. Fishes within six taxa dominate the record throughout including New World silversides, small surfperches, and members of the herring family which …

The Poly Royal Beauty Pageant At Cal Poly San Luis Obispo: How Queens Reigned Over Their Empire, Anna C. Johnson Mar 2016

The Poly Royal Beauty Pageant At Cal Poly San Luis Obispo: How Queens Reigned Over Their Empire, Anna C. Johnson

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

The year was 1952, and the newly crowned Geraldine Cox took her first steps as Poly Royal Queen across the stage. Her coronation marked the eighteenth year California Polytechnic State University elected one woman, who reflected the character and dynamic of everything the campus had to offer, to “reign” over the activities of their annual Open House. Open House had been held annually at Cal Poly since 1902, but in 1933 Julian McPhee had a grander vision of what it could contribute to students and the surrounding community: a fully-fledged “country fair on campus” that the west coast had never …

Weathering And Withering Through The Great Depression: Mcphee's Early Years At The California Polytechnic School, Benjamin K. Aster

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

In 2008 the United States experienced a financial downturn that shook the economic foundations of this country. Unsuspecting homeowners watched helplessly as their homes were lost through the plummeting housing market and consequential bank foreclosures. This economic crisis affected almost all groups of people, including the students and faculty of higher education. In fact, the California State University system narrowly agreed with the California Faculty Association union to a set of furloughs, which amounted to a 10% pay cut for faculty over the 2009 academic year.[1] However, economic depressions are not new to the administrations of colleges and universities.

Coeds Come To The Cal Poly Campus: The Return Of Female Students To Cal Poly, Kaylin A. Embrey Mar 2016

Coeds Come To The Cal Poly Campus: The Return Of Female Students To Cal Poly, Kaylin A. Embrey

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

During the years between 1929 and 1956, women were banned from attending Cal Poly. Women were among the first classes of Cal Poly students, but the crisis that was the Great Depression led to financial strains on higher education; ultimately Cal Poly chose to resolve burdens by eliminating women from the student body. After more than a quarter century of an all-male student population, women were re-admitted in 1956. With such an abrupt reversal in policy, the now coeducational institution faced many challenges. How would the male students respond? What were the expectations of the women students, and did these …

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo's Band Program: The Responsibilities, The Development And Its Significance, Jenely-Anne Lozares

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

“College students don’t have to be music majors to participate in [band]. Only about quarter of the membership in [band] are music majors; the rest are students majoring in a variety of academic subjects...These enthusiastic students choose [band] to play their instruments1,” Doris Valliant, author of Going to College , explains. To choose to be a part of the band program at a university may be about fulfilling one’s enjoyment of playing their instrument, but it is also about the service and important role they provide, influencing and impacting the university. Thus, allowing college band programs to be the success …

Cal Poly Women: Roles And Depictions During World War Ii, Elena P. Sullivan Mar 2016

Cal Poly Women: Roles And Depictions During World War Ii, Elena P. Sullivan

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

When the United States entered World War II as an Allied Power in 1941, educational institutions across the nation felt the impact of the conflict abroad. The California State Polytechnic School President Julian McPhee declared that the university was dedicated to the “all-out war effort” and pledged that all administration, instructors, and students were ready to “exert whatever extra energy is needed to bring final and complete victory to America’s cause.” For Cal Poly, this meant the implementation (and exclusion) of several activities. McPhee, Julian, 1941 Annual Report, January 1, 1942, 36.

University Housing: How Residence Halls Changed Student Life At Cal Poly, Gary B. Jimenez

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports

In 2014, Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong submitted a “Letter to the Editor” in The Mustang News in which he described his vision for the future of Cal Poly housing. “As we contemplate our long-term vision for Cal Poly, we are shifting our culture to become a predominantly residential campus. In the foreseeable future, Cal Poly will house more than half — perhaps as many as two-thirds — of its students in university housing.”1 Armstrong continued, claiming that this move of opening up around 1,400 new spaces for freshman living on-campus was “good for students,” and that he hoped these …

Buddhism, Mindfulness, And Transformative Politics, Matthew J. Moore Mar 2016

Buddhism, Mindfulness, And Transformative Politics, Matthew J. Moore

Political Science

This article examines whether the American cultural phenomena of the practice of Buddhism or the Buddhism-derived technique of mindfulness are likely to be helpful to the political left. It summarizes the central teachings of the ancient Buddhist texts, with particular focus on the issues of mindfulness and politics. It also reviews the political history of Buddhist countries. The author argues that although modern Buddhism has shed its historical embrace of absolutist monarchy in favor of republicanism, and although there is some ideological overlap between Buddhism and the American Left, Buddhism in America is too small a movement for it to …

The Big Short, Elizabeth Armon

Communication Studies

The Big Short (McKay, 2015), adapted from the non-fiction novel The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine by Michael Lewis (2010), follows three separate but parallel stories leading up to the United States housing crisis of 2008. On a macro-level, the film brilliantly depicted the creation, and the ultimate burst, of the credit and housing market bubble. However, on a micro-level the audience is given an opportunity to realize and empathize with the internal struggle that many of the main characters faced as they grappled with the fact that their financial gain from shorting the market came with the caveat …
