Design, Construction, And Evaluation Of Off-Road Rock Sliders, Jake M. Freedman
Design, Construction, And Evaluation Of Off-Road Rock Sliders, Jake M. Freedman
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
This senior project describes the design, fabrication, and evaluation of off-road rock sliders which can be used with Toyota Tacoma trucks of model year 2005-2012. Rock sliders are a form of trail armor and are a common aftermarket addition to trucks that are often used in off-road conditions. Rock sliders, in their simplest form, consist of a steel beam (either tubular or rectangular) that runs underneath the doors of the vehicle providing protection to the undercarriage, rocker panels, and doors as well as reducing the likelihood of becoming stuck or “high-centered” on the underside of the vehicle. The sliders will …
Modeling The Sps Feedback And Feedforward Systems For Improved Performance, Jake Hargrove
Modeling The Sps Feedback And Feedforward Systems For Improved Performance, Jake Hargrove
Physics
The Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is the last link in the chain of accelerators providing protons to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The SPS is currently the limiting factor on the maximum number of protons and thus collisions in the LHC. The SPS upgrade is under way to expand the discovery potential of the LHC. The accelerating system — Radio Frequency (RF) — is being improved. Models of the SPS RF feedback systems were developed. These models could assist with design choices, evaluating the upgraded system performance, and anticipate limitations and issues.
Solar-Powered Hot Tub, Jonathan Peterson, Anthony Zepeda
Solar-Powered Hot Tub, Jonathan Peterson, Anthony Zepeda
Electrical Engineering
This paper discusses the design and implementation of a solar-powered hot tub. The concept of this project was to design an independently-operated hot tub powered by a 12V rechargeable battery, charged during the day by a single 400W solar panel. For this purpose, a twenty-year-old name-brand hot tub was purchased, in used condition. The plumbing, AC electrical wiring, and mechanical pumps were all removed and replaced with new components to meet our design specifications. Additionally, a solar water-heater was designed and integrated into the system to directly apply the sun’s heat to water pumped in and out of the tub, …

Habitat for Humanity International Global Village recruits and sends volunteers to work on various construction Habitat for Humanity construction projects around the world. The village of Khobili in the Mulanje District of Malawi, Africa was selected as the location to construct three homes for villagers that had lost their homes during severe flooding. For me this was an incredible opportunity to come together with a team of other volunteers to build homes for orphans and their caretaker in a rural Malawian village. The Habitat team worked with skilled local masons to build safe, durable and comfortable houses from the foundation …
Case Study: Benefits For General Contractors Increasing Employee Knowledge Of Jobsite Safety, Joshua Salinas
Case Study: Benefits For General Contractors Increasing Employee Knowledge Of Jobsite Safety, Joshua Salinas
Construction Management
This case study examines the jobsite safety practices of multiple construction companies that have had Cal Poly student for employees. A student survey shows the different ways companies effectively or ineffectively taught their employees about jobsite safety. Since jobsite safety is the most important aspect of construction, companies should know the best ways to reach out to their employees and teach them proper safety on the jobsite. This case study consists of asking Cal Poly students questions about what they believed is the appropriate way to teach jobsite safety. According to the survey results, Cal Poly students believed that learning …
Comparison Of Gaussian And Super Gaussian Laser Beams For Addressing Atomic Qubits, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Glen D. Gillen, M. J. Piotrowicz, M. Saffman
Comparison Of Gaussian And Super Gaussian Laser Beams For Addressing Atomic Qubits, Katharina Gillen-Christandl, Glen D. Gillen, M. J. Piotrowicz, M. Saffman
Physics
We study the fidelity of single-qubit quantum gates performed with two-frequency laser fields that have a Gaussian or super Gaussian spatial mode. Numerical simulations are used to account for imperfections arising from atomic motion in an optical trap, spatially varying Stark shifts of the trapping and control beams, and transverse and axial misalignment of the control beams. Numerical results that account for the three-dimensional distribution of control light show that a super Gaussian mode with intensity I~ e-2(r/w0)n provides reduced sensitivity to atomic motion and beam misalignment. Choosing a super Gaussian with n = 6 …
Building An Assessment-Focused Information Literacy Program For Agriculture And Related Disciplines: A Collaborative Approach, Katherine O'Clair
Building An Assessment-Focused Information Literacy Program For Agriculture And Related Disciplines: A Collaborative Approach, Katherine O'Clair
Library Scholarship
Students pursuing degrees in STEM fields, including agriculture and related sciences, need to develop discipline-specific information skills in order to be successful in their educational pursuits and to meet tomorrow’s challenges in their future work as agriculture professionals. Oftentimes, information literacy programs are situated in general education or liberal arts courses, leaving the discipline-specific courses to incorporate information literacy only when and where possible. As STEM librarians, we know this is not sufficient, but the challenge of building a STEM-specific information literacy program can be overwhelming, especially when instructors have little time to incorporate any additional content into their already-packed …
A Condensed History: Exploring The History Of Swanton Pacific Ranch And Environs, Jeanine Marie Scaramozzino
A Condensed History: Exploring The History Of Swanton Pacific Ranch And Environs, Jeanine Marie Scaramozzino
Library Scholarship
Swanton Pacific Ranch is an educational and research facility owned by the Cal Poly Corporation and managed by the Cal Poly State University (Cal Poly) College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences. The rancho’s original inhabitants included Native Americans, Spaniards, Mexicans, as well as various European immigrants and their descendants; currently, the staff, faculty, and students of Cal Poly occupy the land. Each of these groups used the land’s rich environment for a variety of purposes from subsistence to financial and intellectual pursuits. Over time, researchers and local historians have discussed specific aspects of the Swanton Pacific Ranch and its …

Electrical Engineering
Project-based Learning (PBL) has become a popular pedagogical tool in Engineering. Projects force students to put theory learned in lecture into practice, exposes students to some of the nonidealities of real systems (imperfect instruments, uncooperative systems, etc.) that are difficult to convey in lecture or homework, and ideally motivates students by showing how course material is related real-world engineering problems. This work discusses my preliminary and ongoing research into using Instructables.com—a user-content generated website of “Do It Yourself” tutorials—as a tool to help amplify the benefits students derive from PBL. Specifically, I require students to document their projects in an …

A Comparative Study Of The Flora And Soils Of Great Duck And Little Duck Islands, Maine, Usa, Luka Negoita, Matthew Dickinson, Glen H. Mittlehauser, N. Rajakaruna
Biological Sciences
Strong environmental gradients and varied land-use practices have generated a mosaic of habitats harboring distinct plant communities on islands on the coast of Maine. Botanical studies of Maine’s islands, however, are generally limited in number and scope. Baseline studies of Maine’s islands are necessary for assessing vegetation dynamics and changes in habitat conditions in relation to environmental impacts imposed by climate change, rising sea levels, invasive species, pests and pathogens, introduced herbivores, and human disturbance. We conducted a survey of the vascular plants and soils of forest, field, and ocean-side communities of Great Duck and Little Duck Islands, ME. These …

Mapping Quality In Extended Value Streams Using Data Recorders, Eric Olsen, Christopher Fung, Jay Singh, Paul Singh
Mapping Quality In Extended Value Streams Using Data Recorders, Eric Olsen, Christopher Fung, Jay Singh, Paul Singh
Industrial Technology and Packaging
This research compares three new methods and measures for mapping and evaluating the transportation segment of a value chain. The three methods are total energy, energy-time and energy-distance. The methods combine practices used in traditional physical distribution system analysis and extended value stream mapping (VSM) analysis. This research concludes that the energy-distance method and measure is the most effective for analyzing, comparing, and identifying opportunities for value chain improvement. It also identifies a ‘U-shape’ that is characteristic of the energy transfer pattern during a transportation segment that suggests that damage from transportation may need to be screened for quality at …

Hearst Lecture: Gary Hack - Disruptive Changes And The Pattern Of Cities, Gary Hack
Focus
Today I want to talk about the future, but I do so by first looking back, focusing on the moments in a city’s long history when transformative change occurs. I am interested in this topic because I see a lot of cities planning and struggling to do things that have been on their agendas for many years. However, as planners, urban designers, and landscape architects, we need to be thinking about things that will be needed 10 to 15 years from now. I don’t see many cities reinventing their future in the plans they are making. There are reasons for …

Physics
A sample of 102 local (0.02 ≤ z ≤ 0.1) Seyfert galaxies with black hole masses MBH > 107M⊙ was selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and observed using the Keck 10 m telescope to study the scaling relations between MBH and host galaxy properties. We study profile changes of the broad Hβ emission line within the three to nine year time frame between the two sets of spectra. The variability of the broad Hβ emission line is of particular interest, not only because it is used to estimate MBH, …

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
At the end of spring quarter, 2016, we were able to meet most of the objectives and complete basic testing of the structure, as described in the proposal. However, we were unable to complete a few things. Firstly, we were unable to fabricate supplemental beams and columns to be ready in the case a member needed to be replaced. Drawings will be provided so that future students or faculty can fabricate the members. Secondly, we were unable to run earthquake ground motions through the structure due to time constraints with the students graduating. Future graduate students in the ARCE department …
