of micellar casein slurries
Azucena Becerril Díez
The focus of this research was to analyze the effect of Ca chelators on the proteolytic activity of rennet during ripening of a micellar casein slurry. This research was divided in two phases. During the first phase, preliminary studies were performed to understand the behavior of rennet and the milk system in the presence of chelating agents. A solution of reconstituted skim milk at 10% (w/v) was prepared. Individual samples of this solution were divided in two study groups, samples with chelators and rennet and samples …
Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter Development For Residential Dc Electricity, Cassidy Alan Aarstad
Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter Development For Residential Dc Electricity, Cassidy Alan Aarstad
Master's Theses
The following technical report describes the development and testing of an arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) for DC circuits operating primarily at 48 volts. We have identified an effective method for determining when arcing is occurring. Our method is primarily based on comparing the frequency spectrum of current flowing through the circuit during an arcing event to a known characteristic spectrum. Once an arc has been identified, our interrupter is capable of responding adequately to eliminate the arc. Hardware tests show the AFCI developed in this thesis responded, in all test cases, within 2 seconds of an arc fault occurrence. …

The Effects Of Latency On 3d Interactive Data Visualizations, Allen Korenevsky
The Effects Of Latency On 3d Interactive Data Visualizations, Allen Korenevsky
Master's Theses
Interactive data visualizations must respond fluidly to user input to be effective, or so we assume. In fact it is unknown exactly how fast a visualization must run to present every facet within a dataset. An engineering team with limited resources is left with intuition and estimates to determine if their application performs sufficiently well.
This thesis studies how latency affects users' comprehension of data visualizations, specifically 3D geospatial visualizations with large data sets. Subjects used a climate visualization showing temperatures spanning from the 19th to the 21st century to answer multiple choice questions. Metrics like their eye movements, time …
Concatenative Synthesis For Novel Timbral Creation, James Eric Bilous
Concatenative Synthesis For Novel Timbral Creation, James Eric Bilous
Master's Theses
Modern day musicians rely on a variety of instruments for musical expression. Tones produced from electronic instruments have become almost as commonplace as those produced by traditional ones as evidenced by the plethora of artists who can be found composing and performing with nothing more than a personal computer. This desire to embrace technical innovation as a means to augment performance art has created a budding field in computer science that explores the creation and manipulation of sound for artistic purposes. One facet of this new frontier concerns timbral creation, or the development of new sounds with unique characteristics that …
Automating Self Evaluations For Software Engineers, Jonathan Rodrigo A. Miranda
Automating Self Evaluations For Software Engineers, Jonathan Rodrigo A. Miranda
Master's Theses
Software engineers frequently compose self-evaluations as part of employee perfor- mance reviews. These evaluations can be a key artifact for assessing a software engineer’s contributions to a team and organization, and for generating useful feed- back. Self-evaluations can be challenging because a) they can be time consuming, b) individuals may forget about important contributions especially when the review period is long such as a full year, c) some individuals can consciously or unconsciously overstate their contributions, and d) some individuals can be reluctant to describe their contributions for fear of appearing too proud [24].

Music And Language Development: Traits Of Nursery Rhymes And Their Impact On Children's Language Development, Ashley Lauren Gonzalez
Music And Language Development: Traits Of Nursery Rhymes And Their Impact On Children's Language Development, Ashley Lauren Gonzalez
Music
From birth--possibly even before birth--the amount and array of external stimuli profoundly affect a child’s cognitive and linguistic development. In addition to verbal communication from parent to child, singing proves to be an integral aid to a child’s development of speech and language, allegedly due to repetitions of words and rhythms. Nursery rhymes are, from infancy, among the most commonly presented forms of musical stimulus for children. The repetitive nature of the nursery rhymes undoubtedly supports language and speech development, but various characteristics of nursery rhymes, specifically pitch interval, meter, phrase length, contour, and harmony, also contribute substantially to the …

Probing The Source Of Ionization Of Gas In Local Active Galaxies, Jake J. Haslemann
Probing The Source Of Ionization Of Gas In Local Active Galaxies, Jake J. Haslemann
Physics
The [OIII]/Hβnarrow ratio is a good first indicator of the source of ionization of gas in the vicinity of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). If [OIII]/Hβnarrow > 10 then it is likely AGN ionization, for [OIII]/Hβnarrow < 3 it is likely attributed to star formation. While we know that all galaxies host an AGN, and thus expect at least the gas in the very central region to be AGN ionized, this research specifically focuses on the spatially resolved spectra at different distances from the center. We make use of an IDL code to fit the different components in high signal-to-noise optical long-slit spectra from the 10m Keck telescope of 87 Seyfert galaxies in the local universe (0.02 107M⊙) A transition of the gas from being predominantly AGN-ionized to ionization by stars in the galaxy allows us to determine the size of the Narrow Line Region (NLR). Of the 102 objects in our sample, when looking at the peak height [OIII]/Hβnarrow ratio, only 6 objects showed a clear transition between [OIII]/Hβnarrow > 10 to [OIII]/Hβnarrow < 3. There were 22 other objects that showed a basic transition (went from [OIII]/Hβnarrow > 3 to [OIII]/Hβnarrow < 3). These are still significant because we know that these objects are AGN ionized in the center so the size of their NLR is still determined. When looking at the integrated [OIII]/Hβnarrow ratio, 8 objects showed a clear transition, and 35 more showed a basic transition. 5 objects had an [OIII]/Hβnarrow < 3 throughout all of their spectra in both the integrated and peak height graphs which questions the use of BPT diagrams for determining ionization source.

Ultra-Light Bear Canister, Naveen Beasley, Eli Rogers, Cory Wilson, Donald Wood
Mechanical Engineering
A bear canister is the primary tool used by outdoor enthusiasts to protect their food from bears while camping or backpacking. There are many effective products currently on the market, however many are not designed with reduced weight in mind. Hardcore backpackers want to have the lightest gear possible to ease the strain of carrying a large pack for sometimes weeks at a time.
Current bear canisters exist that utilize carbon fiber for weight reduction, however they rely on stock carbon tubes and lack engineering analysis, and no competitor has a fully composite bear canister available. Our sponsor, Nick Hellewell, …

Abstract: Magnesium oxide nanoparticles are being used increasingly as catalysts for organic synthesis, fuel oil additives, and CO2 adsorbents. There are many ways to produce magnesium oxide nanoparticles, but there is little information available regarding the environmental costs of production. As demand for environmentally friendly materials increases, it is important to understand environmental impact differences between various production methods. This study will compare the differences in embodied energy and global warming potential (GWP) between two synthesis methods: microwave combustion synthesis (microwave synthesis) and oxidation of magnesium hydroxide (aqueous synthesis). The resulting nanoparticles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), …
