Ethics, Law, And The Science Of Fish Welfare, Colin Allen
Ethics, Law, And The Science Of Fish Welfare, Colin Allen
Between the Species
Fish farming is one of the fastest growing sectors of agriculture, attracting considerable attention to the question of whether existing farming regulations and animal welfare laws are adequate to deal with the expanding role of fish in feeding humans. The role of fish as model organisms in scientific research is also expanding -- a majority of research biology departments now keep zebrafish for the purposes of genome biology, and they are used widely used for basic neuroscience research. However, due to their diversity and distance from mammalian biology, fish pose difficult questions for the application of legal and ethical principles …

Satisfaction And Importance Ratings Of Individuals Who Attended Oktapitfest At Tap It Brewing Co. In San Luis Obispo, California, Carrie Nasby
Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Administration
Special events and festivals, within the past few decades, have become increasingly popular. Now, more than ever, there is a desire and need for new companies to emerge into the industry in order to offer special events and lifelong memories to attendees. On October 9, 2011, Tap It Brewing CO, in San Luis Obispo, California, launched their first annual OkTapItfest event. The purpose of this study was to assess attendee satisfaction and the opinion of importance of event characteristics of the OkTapItfest at Tap It Brewing CO. The Dancer's Friend - A Wearable Electronics Investigation, Paul Case
The Dancer's Friend - A Wearable Electronics Investigation, Paul Case
Computer Engineering
This project is an initial investigation into the use of wearable electronics for wireless gesture detection, with the end goal of an application of augmenting dance performance through the use of gesture controlled sound. Though the system developed is not as yet of practical use to a dance performer, it lays the groundwork for future development and expansion, in both hardware and software design. In particular, it provides an in-depth overview of the lessons learned regarding the special hardware development considerations in wearable electronics to help ensure the success of future developments.

Becoming Cittaslow: A City's Journey To Becoming A Cittaslow Member, Megan Alexis Elovich
Becoming Cittaslow: A City's Journey To Becoming A Cittaslow Member, Megan Alexis Elovich
Master's Theses
The project will explore Cittaslow as an alternative to traditional urban development. Sprawl and consumption of non-local resources are discouraged with Cittaslow and preservation of culture and history become the tangible benchmarks of the community. It will explore the history of Cittaslow as a movement and an organization; as well as its influences on existing member cities and the criteria used to distinguish them from others. The City of San Luis Obispo is used as a case study to determine whether existing conditions measure up to Cittaslow criteria.
Estimated Sales And Investment Costs To Produce And Retail Gelato In The Petaluma Area, Katherine Camozzi
Estimated Sales And Investment Costs To Produce And Retail Gelato In The Petaluma Area, Katherine Camozzi
Agribusiness
Recent events in the California dairy have left many dairy producers with high feed costs, low profits, and low (sometimes negative) margins. Some producers have transitioned to producing value-added or artisanal dairy products to help increase the revenues earned from farm milk, particularly in Sonoma County. Because limited research exists on the business opportunities in response to a rapidly growing market for value-added products, this project explores the feasibility of starting a gelato production and retail business in the Petaluma area. To assess business feasibility, a consumer survey was created to estimate the percent of residents and non-residents who would …
Flying Qualities Built-In-Test For Unmanned Aerial Systems, Alton Pak-Hin Chiu
Flying Qualities Built-In-Test For Unmanned Aerial Systems, Alton Pak-Hin Chiu
Master's Theses
This paper presents a flying qualities built-in-test for UAS application with the scope limited to the longitudinal axis. A doublet input waveform excites the AV and both α and q are used by EUDKF to estimate the A and B matrices which are short period approximations of the system. ζ, ω, GM, PM, observability, and controllability are calculated to determine flying qualities with the results displayed to the AVO in a color-coded, easy to interpret display.
While SID algorithms have been flying in vehicles with adaptive control schemes, vehicles with other schemes (such as classical feedback) lack this built-in self …
Form-Based Codes, Design Guidelines And Placemaking: The Case Of Hayward, Ca., Cindy Ma
Form-Based Codes, Design Guidelines And Placemaking: The Case Of Hayward, Ca., Cindy Ma
Master's Theses
Throughout history planning codes and standards have been used to regulate the built environment for health, power, order, and economic reasons. More recently, in the urban design and planning field, planning codes and standards have emerged to become tools in the process of “placemaking”. The concept of placemaking builds from the desire of humans to create places, not spaces, which are unique, attractive, identifiable, and memorable. It is a concept that is comprised of visual and social components, recognizing the need for both in the creation of successful places. In the field of urban design and planning, form-based codes (FBCs) …
