The Owl, The Goldfish And The Bull - The Question Of The Animal And Romantic Poetry, Hui Zhang Jun 2016

The Owl, The Goldfish And The Bull - The Question Of The Animal And Romantic Poetry, Hui Zhang

Between the Species

This article argues that the representation of animals in Romantic poetry contributes to the contemporary philosophical and ethical discussion of the question of animals by providing a literary expression of the latter. Conversely, reading depictions of animals in Romantic poetry with their philosophical implications in mind throws light on the oppositions between different human groups, such as between Orientals and Occidentals, or between males and females, in Romantic poetry. These categories connect with each other in different ways in the works of three prominent Romantic poets: William Wordsworth, Lord Byron and Alexander Pushkin. Animals in their poetry reflect their views …

Pitkin Charter School, Scott Decker Jun 2016

Pitkin Charter School, Scott Decker

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

The Loew’s Pitkin building is a renovation of a movie/stage theater built in 1929. Over the next three decades the neighborhood declined and the theater closed in the Nineteen Sixties. The building was then a church for a while and then retail space with the theater auditorium empty. The building was finally abandoned in the Seventies and deteriorated until the early part of the next century. The School board of New York City took possession of the vacant structure and turned it into PS 159. It is a grade school serving grades from kindergarten to fifth grade and special education. …

The Freedom Of Speech In Public Forums On College Campuses: A Single-Site Case Study On Pushing The Boundaries Of The Freedom Of Speech, Alexander Davidson

Journalism

The purpose of this single-site study is to test how far speech can be pushed before it is no longer protected at the California Polytechnic State University. The purpose isn’t merely to push limitations for the sake of testing boundaries, but it is to see what types of speech truly add to the marketplace of ideas and what types simply do not. The main points of the study are to understand what speech is protected and what speech is not protected on California Polytechnic State University’s campus and to understand how the provocation that comes along with “negative speech” can …

Exploring Transit Ridership Using Census, Routing & Scheduling, And Stop Characteristic Data, Douglas Harvey Moody Mar 2016

Exploring Transit Ridership Using Census, Routing & Scheduling, And Stop Characteristic Data, Douglas Harvey Moody

Master's Theses

This study develops, analyzes, and applies transit-system-specific regression tree models that identify and prioritize transit system improvements through analysis and application of ridership, Census, routing and scheduling, and transit stop characteristic data. Regression trees identify and rank independent variables that split dependent variable datasets into meaningful subsets according to significant relationships with independent variable datasets, and regression tree models can be used to identify and prioritize transit system improvements. In this study, ridership datatypes are the dependent variables (i.e., boardings and alightings) and Census, routing and scheduling, and transit stop characteristic datatypes are the independent variables. Data associated with the …

How Many Particles Are Present In The Air? Bioaerosol Detection Using An Air Particle Counter, Angie Pamela Rivera, Parag Vaishampayan Aug 2015

How Many Particles Are Present In The Air? Bioaerosol Detection Using An Air Particle Counter, Angie Pamela Rivera, Parag Vaishampayan

STAR Program Research Presentations

Relative cleanliness in terms of particle abundance in spacecraft assembly facilities is determined by particle counts carried out in clean rooms during resting conditions. Particle counters assess total particles and particle size distribution, but do not distinguish inert particles from biological particles, which may include bacterial spores that are resistant to standard cleanroom sterilization procedures. Current cleanroom certifications do not fully assess the effects of human presence on spacecraft contamination since humans are known symbionts to enumerate microorganisms and assessments are performed at rest when there is no human presence. In this study, contamination risks and bioburden in spacecraft assembly …

Seaworld And The Blackfish: The Lack Of Two-Way Symmetrical Communication And Finding The Correct Message, Ashley Pierce

Journalism

This study explores how two-way symmetrical communication could help SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment rebuild their reputation and take back their brand after attacks from animal rights groups following the release of the documentary Blackfish. The study analyzes SeaWorld’s previous and current public relations campaigns, how effective they’ve been and if utilization of the two-way symmetrical communication model could benefit the company. In the past a documentary like Blackfish would have caused backlash towards SeaWorld only from the few who saw it in theatres, but today everything ends up on the internet and remains there, circulating outrage and criticism to new …
