International Relations From Below: Teaching Absences In International Relations, Tamara Soukotta
International Relations From Below: Teaching Absences In International Relations, Tamara Soukotta
Feminist Pedagogy
For four years (2017-2022) I was part of a teaching team to teach the subject of International Relations (IR) to second-year Bachelor International Studies students. The course was structured to have twelve lectures; these lectures were to be delivered by the course leaders to an audience of 500-800 students. In addition to the lectures, students had four tutorial classes, where the rest of the teaching team worked with smaller groups of students (12-15 students in each group). These classes were designed to help the students link theories and practices. As a woman of colour teaching IR in a Dutch university, …

Undoing The Absence Of Asexuality In The Classroom, Canton Winer
Undoing The Absence Of Asexuality In The Classroom, Canton Winer
Feminist Pedagogy
Asexuality exists at the margins of sexuality, often invisible to and misunderstood outside—and even within—the LGBTQIA+ community. As an identity that generally refers to those who experience low/no sexual attraction, asexuality challenges the broadly held notion that everyone experiences sexual attraction. Given the centrality of sexuality to a great deal of feminist scholarship, the absence of asexuality in many feminist classrooms is striking. Moreover, decades of feminist and queer research and pedagogy have demonstrated the vast, liberatory potential of centering the margins as we seek to understand the social world. With that lineage in mind, asexuality presents a rich, relatively …
Crying In The Classroom: Teaching (Through A Lack Of) Racial Empathy, Brittney Miles
Crying In The Classroom: Teaching (Through A Lack Of) Racial Empathy, Brittney Miles
Feminist Pedagogy
Intense emotions in classrooms are often interpreted unfavorably because of how bodies can disrupt a space that centers the mind. However, bodies can also reflect students’ and educators’ emotional relationships with course material. Through an elucidative reflection on the pedagogical power of racialized emotions, this critical commentary considers the transgressive possibilities of racial empathy as a Black feminist epistemology. As a Black woman graduate student instructor, tensions emerge in classrooms around what it may mean when Black students and I are crying, and white students are not. Intense emotions, or the lack thereof, complicate the politics of power, responsibility, emotional …
Teaching Queer Trauma: Applying Meditation As A Pedagogy Of Compassion, Kody Muncaster
Teaching Queer Trauma: Applying Meditation As A Pedagogy Of Compassion, Kody Muncaster
Feminist Pedagogy
Mindfulness practices can help greatly when teaching potentially triggering courses on queerness and trauma. Meditation allows students to learn how to manage triggers, enhancing their distress tolerance and their ability to fully engage with course material. It also has practical benefits for applied courses, as students will learn how mindfulness practices can help when working with queer and traumatized clients in, for example, a social services setting. This original teaching activity describes a course I taught called 'Queer Trauma and Resilience: Canadian Perspectives,' and outlines several meditations that were taught progressively throughout the course. Debriefing methods are included as well …

Silence As An Educational Tool To Deconstruct Normative Societal Structures And Create Epistemic Trust, Milad Mohebali, Elmira Jangjou
Feminist Pedagogy
This article advances a teaching strategy to help students reflect on how they engage in class discussion by considering silence and silencing of voices in classroom discussions among peers as epistemic violence where a student’s capacity as a knower is questioned. We provide examples of silence(ing) we experienced as graduate international students from the Global South studying educational policy and leadership studies in the United States, to then share how we have used silence as a pedagogical tool to deconstruct the assumptions of the field and the society that keeps the silence as normative. We introduce third thinging as a …
Teaching Through Absence: Using An Absence Lens As A Feminist Pedagogical Tool, Maya Wenzel
Teaching Through Absence: Using An Absence Lens As A Feminist Pedagogical Tool, Maya Wenzel
Feminist Pedagogy
A significant number of teaching resources and materials fail to account for important viewpoints and identities. These viewpoints and identities may then become misrepresented, excluded from the classroom, or ignored by the instructor. In response to this absence, pedagogues may utilize an absence lens to focus on what is not present in materials rather than what is. This piece introduces the special issue “Teaching Through Absence: How We Teach Absence and What Absence Teaches Us,” which seeks to address how we can better teach viewpoints, identities, and issues often absent from scholarship and course materials. It further aims to address …
Robotic Origami Worm, Carter Josef, Michael Freeman, Mohammad Hasan
Robotic Origami Worm, Carter Josef, Michael Freeman, Mohammad Hasan
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Soft robotics can solve many unique engineering problems. The ancient art of origami has inspired design for a new breed of robots. In this research, a novel fold design was created which has high linear stiffness, high bending stiffness, and the ability to deform omnidirectionally in order to turn. The robot is operated using a DC motor to expand and contract and electromagnets to control friction. The robot moves very quickly compared with many other origami robots in the literature. Other interesting ways to control friction were explored including expansion mechanisms. An origami design was created and tested that expands …

Exploring And Operationalizing Inclusive Teaching In Engineering Education, Keith Fouch, Ellie Abundo
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Inclusive teaching is vital in engineering education because of its potential to enhance learning for all students. The purpose of this research is to explore faculty experiences with inclusive teaching, specifically focused on engineering settings. Our findings highlight dominant beliefs, practices, and challenges that emerged from our preliminary analysis. Future work will corroborate these findings with additional faculty as well as engineering student perspectives and beliefs.
Student’S Conceptualization Of Engineering Design Over Multiple Design Experiences, Caitlyn Berryhill
Student’S Conceptualization Of Engineering Design Over Multiple Design Experiences, Caitlyn Berryhill
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Cal Poly’s undergraduate engineering program requires a design experience for each of the four years. This research project's focus is to better understand how students are conceptualizing engineering design over their multiple design projects. Data was collected through a comprehensive survey given to 73 engineering students. The questions in this survey targeted student’s comprehension and relationship with design, as well as their demographics and course history. Open-ended questions were organized using a thematic coding system which were then compared to the demographics and course history information. This process resulted in four separate comparisons between the survey questions. Interpreting these results …
Analysis Of Gait Parameters And Knee Angles In Ultimate Frisbee Players: Implications For Balance And Injury, Ethan Nikcevich
Analysis Of Gait Parameters And Knee Angles In Ultimate Frisbee Players: Implications For Balance And Injury, Ethan Nikcevich
Master's Theses
Biomechanics research investigating gait and balance of ultimate frisbee players is an unexplored topic. Ultimate requires a wide range of motions that could improve balance and is also a sport prone to frequent injury. This study explores the impact of playing ultimate on gait parameters associated with balance and knee angles associated with joint injury. Gait trials were conducted on 8 ultimate players and 8 control participants between the ages of 18 and 23 to obtain total double support time, stance phase time, single support time, load response time, abduction-adduction (AA) angles, internal-external (IE) rotation angles, and flexion angles of …
Additive Manufacturing For Medical Education, Michael Noon
Additive Manufacturing For Medical Education, Michael Noon
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
A growing body of evidence is suggesting that anatomical knowledge, the keystone of many medical specialties, is suffering among new graduates. While a host of reasons are provided, one common thread that many point to is the decline of cadaver dissections in the classroom. Many virtual audio-visual tools are used to address this gap, yet evidence has shown their ineffectiveness. Given this gap, the high degree of flexibility found in additive manufacturing (AM), and the many uses AM has already found in the medical field, we propose its use to fill this gap, allowing for students to learn with touch …

This research aims to validate the proposed benefits of the macro button toolbar system using an analysis of a time study and the radiology group’s historical wRVU productivity data. The study found that radiologists using this system achieved significantly higher productivity compared to national averages, with high toolbar users experiencing a 29% increase in wRVU productivity and a 52.6% reduction in report completion time for X-ray exams. The reduced report …
Review Study On Promoting Diversity And Inclusion In Engineering Education Through Digital Twins, Devon Bountry
Review Study On Promoting Diversity And Inclusion In Engineering Education Through Digital Twins, Devon Bountry
College of Engineering Summer Undergraduate Research Program
This study investigates the effect of digital twins in engineering education. This research was based on published research papers, conference papers, and case studies. Throughout a large range of studies, it was shown that digital twins can increase learning motivation and retainment through uses such as game-centered learning, personalized learning, and virtual prototyping. Particularly in engineering laboratory classes, digital twins can increase the variety of laboratory options while not increasing the cost due to equipment. This results in less barriers for students as there are more learning tools available at no additional cost or other requirements.
