Solid Waste Resource Recovery Alternatives, U.S. Facility, Subic Bay, Philippines, Samuel A. Vigil, R. M. Roberts, Donald E. Brunner

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The U.S. Navy Public Works Center, Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines (PWC Subic Bay) is responsible for the collection and disposal of almost 300,000 yd3 of solid waste annually. A portion of this solid waste is manually sorted and recycled, resulting in gross revenues of over $200,000 in FY82. The present manual sorting and recycling system is considered by PWC Subic Bay to be inadequate in terms of sanitation, safety, and recyclable materials recovery. Therefore , PWC Subic Bay requested that the Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory (NCEL) study the system and recommend improvements.

A Birefringence Relaxation Determination Of Rotational Diffusion Of Magnetotactic Bacteria, Charles Rosenblatt, Richard B. Frankel, Richard P. Blakemore

Physics

The orientational relaxation of the magnetotactic bacterium Aquaspirillum magnetotacticum is observed by the decay of the optical birefringence upon switching off an aligning magnetic field. The data yield a rotational diffusion constant Dr ≅ 0.13 s1 and information about cell sizes that is consistent with optical microscopy data.

Pulsatile Administration Of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone To Anestrous Sows: Endocrine Changes Associated With Gnrh-Induced And Spontaneous Estrus, Jeffrey D. Armstrong, J. H. Britt Jan 1985

Pulsatile Administration Of Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone To Anestrous Sows: Endocrine Changes Associated With Gnrh-Induced And Spontaneous Estrus, Jeffrey D. Armstrong, J. H. Britt

Office of the President Scholarship

This experiment determined whether pulsatile administration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) would induce estrus and ovulation in seasonally anestrous primiparous sows and compared endocrine responses of GnRH-induced sows with those of primiparous sows that exhibited spontaneous estrus after weaning. Seventeen primiparous Landrace X Large White sows farroed in August 1982, lactated 23.8 ± 0.4 days (mean ± SEM), and weaned 9.0 ± 0.3 pigs per litter. Blood for determination of progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and estradiol-17β (E) was collected every 6 h from 1 day before to 12 days after weaning. Twelve sows exhibited spontaneous estrus 135 ± 9 h …

Microaerobic Conditions Are Required For Magnetite Formation Within Aquaspirillum Magnetotacticum, R. P. Blakemore, K. A. Short, D. A. Bazylinski, Charles Rosenblatt, Richard B. Frankel

Physics

The amount of magnetite (Fe3O4) within magnetosomes of the microaerophilic bacterium Aquaspirillum magnetotacticum varies with oxygen and nitrogen supply. The development of optical methods for directly measuring cell magnetism in culture samples has enabled us to quantitate bacterial Fe3O4 yields. We measured final cell yields, average cell magnetic moments, and magnetosome yields of growing cells. Cultures were grown with NO3-, NH4+, or both, in sealed, unshaken vials with initial headspace Po2 values ranging from 0 (trace) to 21 kPa.

More than 50% of cells had detectable …
