Azorhizobium Caulinodans Respires With At Least Four Terminal Oxidases, Christopher Kitts, Robert A. Ludwig
Azorhizobium Caulinodans Respires With At Least Four Terminal Oxidases, Christopher Kitts, Robert A. Ludwig
Biological Sciences
In culture, Azorhizobium caulinodans used at least four terminal oxidases, cytochrome aa3 (cytaa3), cytd, cyto, and a second a-type cytochrome, which together mediated general, respiratory electron (e-) transport to O2. To genetically dissect physiological roles for these various terminal oxidases, corresponding Azorhizobium apocytochrome genes were cloned, and three cytaa3 mutants, a cytd mutant, and a cytaa3, cytd double mutant were constructed by reverse genetics. These cytochrome oxidase mutants were tested for growth, oxidase activities, and N2 fixation properties both …

Nutrient Uptake And Organic Acid Anion Metabolism In Lupins And Peas Supplied With Nitrate, S. P. Loss, A. D. Robson, G. S.P. Ritchie
Nutrient Uptake And Organic Acid Anion Metabolism In Lupins And Peas Supplied With Nitrate, S. P. Loss, A. D. Robson, G. S.P. Ritchie
Food Science and Nutrition
Unlike many plants reported in the literature, lupins do not excrete OH− in amounts equivalent to the net excess of inorganic anion uptake over inorganic cation uptake. To investigate the mechanisms involved in the maintenance of charge balance, nutrient uptake and organic anion accumulation of lupins and peas supplied with a range of NO3− concentrations, were compared. Lupins absorbed less NO3− than peas on a dry weight basis, which largely ACCOUNTED for the smaller excess of anion uptake over cation uptake in lupins than in peas at the same NO3− supply. When anion uptake exceeded cation uptake, peas excreted an …

Fierstine, Sallie C. Beavers, Federico Achaval, Hiroyuki Suganuma, Robert L. Pitman, Yuichiro Yamaguchi, Carlos Ma. Prigioni
Biological Sciences
Billfishes have long been known to impale a great variety of objects, but there are only two brief, obscure records of marine turtles being speared. Details are presented on these two, as well as on two other confirmed records; data from two additional unconfirmed records are also presented. In total, three species of marine turtles are known to have been impaled by three species of billfishes; a fourth species of fish and a fourth species turtle are listed in an unconfirmed case. Records come from the eastern and western Pacific as well as the eastern Atlantic. Of the four confirmed …

Spatial And Temporal Aspects Of Populations Revealed By Mitochondrial Dna, Francis X. Villablanca
Spatial And Temporal Aspects Of Populations Revealed By Mitochondrial Dna, Francis X. Villablanca
Biological Sciences
The evolutionary analysis of DNA sequences bridges phylogenetics and population genetics. Ancient DNA (aDNA) alJows the study of extinct genotypes, populations, and species, as well as dichronic comparisons of extant populations and species. Thus a DNA forges an empirical link between history and two inherently historical fields of research. Fortunately, the conceptual frameworks of phylogenetics and population genetics can easily be extended to encompass advances being made in the study of aDNA.

Office of the President Scholarship
We investigated the effect of administration of somatotropin (ST) and/or eCG on insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and IGF-binding proteins (IGFBP) in serum and follicular fluid (FFL) of cattle actively immunized against growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF). Cyclic beef cattle, previously immunized against GRF-( 1-29)-Gly-Gly-Cys-NH2 conjugated to human serum albumin (synthesized and provided by Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc., Nutley, NJ; GRFi, n = 31) or to human serum albumin alone (HSAi, n = 26), received (i.m.): 1) 25 mg recombinantly derived methionyl somatotropin (rbST, n = 14; sometribove provided by Monsanto Co., St. Louis, MO); 2) 1100 IU eCG (n = 10); …

Rock Magnetic Criteria For The Detection Of Biogenic Magnetite, Bruce M. Moskowitz, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski
Rock Magnetic Criteria For The Detection Of Biogenic Magnetite, Bruce M. Moskowitz, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski
Physics
We report results on the magnetic properties of magnetites produced by magnetotactic and dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria. Magnetotactic bacterial (MTB) strains MS1, MV1 and MV2 and dissimilatory iron-reducing bacterium strain GS-15, grown in pure cultures, were used in this study. Our results suggest that a combination of room temperature coercivity analysis and low temperature remanence measurements provides a characteristic magnetic signature for intact chains of single domain (SD) particles of magnetite from MTBs. The most useful magnetic property measurements include: (1) acquisition and demagnetization of isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM) using static, pulse and alternating fields; (2) acquisition of anhysteretic remanent magnetization …

Mass Media Messages, Myths And Martyrs: Analyzing "American Responds To Aids" Public Service Announcements, 1987-1992, Douglas J. Swanson
Mass Media Messages, Myths And Martyrs: Analyzing "American Responds To Aids" Public Service Announcements, 1987-1992, Douglas J. Swanson
Journalism
A brief narrative description of the journal article, document, or resource. Focusing on the federal government's efforts to educate the public to the dangers of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), a study examined "America Responds to AIDS" public service announcements (PSA's) through a traditional rhetorical analysis (PSA characters, plot, pace, tone, and message design). Forty-four English-language television and radio PSA's produced under the "America Responds to AIDS" campaign were examined. Results indicated that the PSA's: (1) support cultural stereotypes of male carriers and female victims; (2) used inexplicit terminology; (3) employed fear appeals; (4) blocked access to helpful information with …
