Cryptic Luminescence In The Cold-Water Fish Pathogen Vibrio Salmonicida, P. M. Fidopiastis, Henning Sørum, E. G. Ruby

Biological Sciences

The recent discovery that the fish pathogen Vibrio salmonicida is closely related to the luminous bacteria Vibrio fischeri and Vibrio logei suggested that V. salmonicida might also be capable of bioluminescence. Interestingly, cells of V. salmonicida were found to produce light in culture, but only when exposed to either an aliphatic aldehyde and/or the major V. fischeri autoinducer N-(3-oxo-hexanoyl)-l-homoserine lactone, a transcriptional activator of the luminescence (lux) genes. An extract of spent medium of V. salmonicida that should contain any V. salmonicida acyl-homoserine lactone autoinducer, when added to V. fischeri cells, led to an induction of their …

Abundance Of Spiders And Insect Predators On Grapes In Central California, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane Jan 1999

Abundance Of Spiders And Insect Predators On Grapes In Central California, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane

Horticulture and Crop Science

We compared the abundance of spiders and predaceous insects in five central California vineyards. Spiders constituted 98.1% of all predators collected. More than 90% of all spiders collected were from eight species of spiders, representing six families. Two theridiids (Theridion dilutum and T. melanurum) were the most abundant, followed by a miturgid (Cheiracanthium inclusum) and an agelinid (Hololena nedra). Predaceous insects comprised 1.6% of all predators collected, and were represented by six genera in five families. Nabis americoferis (Heteroptera, Nabidae) was the most common predaceous insect, with its densities highest late in the growing …

Response To Dietary Dilution In An Omnivorous Freshwater Turtle: Implications For Ontogenetic Dietary Shifts, Shannon J. Mccauley, Karen A. Bjorndal Jan 1999

Response To Dietary Dilution In An Omnivorous Freshwater Turtle: Implications For Ontogenetic Dietary Shifts, Shannon J. Mccauley, Karen A. Bjorndal

Biological Sciences

Several species of freshwater turtles in the family Emydidae undergo an ontogenetic dietary shift; as juvenile turtles mature, they change from a primarily carnivorous to a primarily herbivorous diet. It has been hypothesized that this shift results from an unfavorable ratio of gut capacity to metabolic rate that prevents small reptiles from processing adequate volumes of plant material to meet their energetic demands. Effects of dietary dilution on intake were evaluated in two size classes of red-eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) to test whether small reptiles have a lower capacity to compensate for low-quality diets through increased intake …

Ontogenies Of Phototactic Behavior And Metamorphic Competence In Larvae Of Three Species Of Bugula (Bryozoa), Dean E. Wendt, Robert M. Woollacott Jan 1999

Ontogenies Of Phototactic Behavior And Metamorphic Competence In Larvae Of Three Species Of Bugula (Bryozoa), Dean E. Wendt, Robert M. Woollacott

Biological Sciences

The free swimming larvae of many marine invertebrates actively respond to light. Light cues can be used to regulate position in the water column and to facilitate encountering sites suitable for metamorphosis. We examined the ontogeny of larval phototaxis and the ontogeny of metamorphic competency in larvae from three congeneric species of bryozoans. Larvae of Bugula neritina are positively phototactic on emergence from the brood chamber, whereas larvae of B. simplex and B. stolonifera appear initially photoneutral when populations of larvae are examined. Larvae of all three species become photonegative with time. Temporally coincident with this change to negative phototaxis …

Late Holocene Sea Temperatures Along The Cental California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett Jan 1999

Late Holocene Sea Temperatures Along The Cental California Coast, Terry L. Jones, Douglas J. Kennett

Social Sciences

Mussel shells from central California coastal archaeological sites record changes in sea surface temperatures in the past 2000 years. Water temperatures, inferred from oxygen isotopes in the shells, were about 1°C cooler than present and stable between 2000 and 700 yr ago. Between about 700 and 500 yr ago, seasonal variation was greater than present, with extremes above and below historic levels. Water temperatures were 2-3°C cooler than today 500-300 yr ago. The interval of variable sea temperatures 700-500 yr ago partially coincided with an interval of drought throughout central California. A coincident disruption in human settlement along the coast …

Production Of Biogenic Mn Oxides By Leptothrix Discophora Ss-1 In A Chemically Defined Growth Medium And Evaluation Of Their Pb Adsorption Characteristics, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, William C. Ghiorse, Michael L. Shuler Jan 1999

Production Of Biogenic Mn Oxides By Leptothrix Discophora Ss-1 In A Chemically Defined Growth Medium And Evaluation Of Their Pb Adsorption Characteristics, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, William C. Ghiorse, Michael L. Shuler

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Biogenic Mn oxides were produced by the bacterium Leptothrix discophora SS-1 (= ATCC 3182) in a chemically defined mineral salts medium, and the Pb binding and specific surface area of these oxides were characterized. Growth of SS-1 in the defined medium with pyruvate as a carbon and energy source required the addition of vitamin B12. Complete oxidation of Mn(II) within 60 h required the addition of ≥0.1 μM FeSO4. Pb adsorption isotherms were determined for the biogenic Mn oxides (and associated cells with their extracellular polymer) and compared to the Pb adsorption isotherms of cells and …

Perspectives Of Five Stakeholder Groups: Challenging Behavior Of Individuals With Mental Retardation And/Or Autism, Michael B. Ruef, Ann P. Turnbull, H. Rutherford Turnbull, Denise Poston

Graduate Studies in Education

Data from five focus groups, each representing a different stakeholder constituency interested in the challenging behavior of individuals with mental retardation and/or autism, were reported. Emergent themes across administrators and policy makers, families, friends, individuals with disabilities, and teachers and practitioners included current barriers faced; practical, positive solutions found; and preferences for helpful informational products concerning challenging behavior. Key recommendations focus on the implications of this information for research, training, and dissemination activities.

Determining The Source Of Individuals: Multilocus Genotyping In Nonequilibrium Population Genetics, Neil Davies, Francis X. Villablanca, George K. Roderick Jan 1999

Determining The Source Of Individuals: Multilocus Genotyping In Nonequilibrium Population Genetics, Neil Davies, Francis X. Villablanca, George K. Roderick

Biological Sciences

Recently founded populations represent an enormous challenge for genetic analysis: new populations are often genetically impoverished, making it hard to find sufficiently variable markers, and what little variation is present tends to be ancestral, rendering phylogenetic methods inappropriate. Recently, novel genetic markers and new statistical analyses have made multilocus genotyping an invaluable tool in the fledgling field of nonequilibrium population genetics. Such advances are not of mere academic interest but address questions of great economic, medical and conservation significance.

Optimal Stimulus Electrode Dipole Orientation, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin Jan 1999

Optimal Stimulus Electrode Dipole Orientation, Robert B. Szlavik, Hubert De Bruin

Biomedical Engineering

The elicited M-Wave that results from the surface stimulation of the median nerve is highly dependent upon the geometric orientation of the stimulus electrode dipole. This phenomenon could make standardization of M-Wave measurements between tests performed on a single subject problematic. We present an experimental paradigm that illustrates this variability in terms of an estimate of the slope of the M-Wave peak potential versus stimulus current amplitude and the minimum stimulus current required to consistently elicit a minimal response. The design of an automated instrument for selecting the optimal stimulus electrode dipole orientation based on the electrode orientation experiment is …

Dietary Intake And Gallbladder Disease: A Review, Marilyn Tseng, James E. Everhart, Robert S. Sandler Jan 1999

Dietary Intake And Gallbladder Disease: A Review, Marilyn Tseng, James E. Everhart, Robert S. Sandler

Kinesiology and Public Health

Objective: Dietary intake has long been looked upon as a potentially modifiable risk factor for gallbladder disease (GBD), here defined as either having gallstones or having had surgery for gallstones. This paper reviews the epidemiological evidence for an association between dietary intake and GBD, focusing on six dietary factors that have received the most attention in studies in this area: energy intake, fatty acids, cholesterol, carbohydrates and fibre, calcium and alcohol. The objectives of this review are to evaluate the potential usefulness of altering the diet to prevent GBD and to consider future research in this area. Design: We reviewed …

Magnetic Microstructure Of Magnetotactic Bacteria By Electron Holography, Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski, Martha R. Mccartney, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Mihály Pósfai, Peter R. Buseck Dec 1998

Magnetic Microstructure Of Magnetotactic Bacteria By Electron Holography, Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski, Martha R. Mccartney, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Mihály Pósfai, Peter R. Buseck

Physics

Off-axis electron holography in the transmission electron microscope was used to correlate the physical and magnetic microstructure of magnetite nanocrystals in magnetotactic bacteria. The magnetite crystals were all single magnetic domains, and the magnetization directions of small superparamagnetic crystals were constrained by magnetic interactions with larger crystals in the chains. Shape anisotropy was found to dominate magnetocrystalline anisotropy in elongated crystals. A coercive field between 300 and 450 oersted was determined for one chain.

Exploitations Of Sexual Signals By Predators And Parasitoids, Marlene Zuk, Gita R. Kolluru Dec 1998

Exploitations Of Sexual Signals By Predators And Parasitoids, Marlene Zuk, Gita R. Kolluru

Biological Sciences

Signals used to attract mates are often conspicuous to predators and parasites, and their evolution via sexual selection is expected to be opposed by viability selection. Many secondary sexual traits may represent a compromise between attractiveness and avoidance of detection. Although such signal exploitation appears to be widespread, most examples come from species that use acoustic or olfactory mating signals, and relatively few cases of visual signal exploitation can be substantiated. Because males are usually the signaling sex, they are more at risk from predators or parasitoids that locate prey or hosts by sexual signals; this differential selection on the …

Photosynthetic Parameters And Empirical Modeling Of Primary Production: A Case Study On The Antarctic Peninsula Shelf, Mark A. Moline, Oscar Schofield, Nicolas P. Boucher Nov 1998

Photosynthetic Parameters And Empirical Modeling Of Primary Production: A Case Study On The Antarctic Peninsula Shelf, Mark A. Moline, Oscar Schofield, Nicolas P. Boucher

Biological Sciences

Eight hundred photosynthesis-irradiance relationships were determined in the shelf waters adjacent to Palmer Station, Antarctica during the spring/summer periods of 1991–94. Biomass specific maximum photosynthetic rate, PBmax, and the light limited photosynthetic efficiency, αB, were poorly correlated to the physical forcing and nutrient regimes at the sampling stations. The two photosynthetic parameters, however, did strongly covary indicating the minimum irradiance required to saturate photosynthesis, Ik, was relatively constant in this highly variable environment. The variability in Ik could partially be attributed to both depth in the water column and time of the …
