Decision-Support Systems: Notions, Prototypes, And In-Use Applications With Emphasis On Military Applications, Jens G. Pohl, Arthur Chapman, Kym Jason Pohl, Jonathan Primrose, Adam Wozniak

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

This report describes work performed by the Collaborative Agent Design Research Center (CADRC) over the past several years in the design and implementation of collaborative, computer-based, decision-support systems, mostly for military applications. In these systems multiple components, either program modules or separate processes (i.e., software agents), cooperate with each other and human decision makers to solve complex problems. The components are essentially of two types: knowledge-based narrow domain experts that provide services to other agents (i.e., service-agents); and, more autonomous agents (i.e., object-agents) that represent the interests of selected objects in high level information representation schemas.

Structure-Property Relationships Of Silicone Biofouling-Release Coatings: Effect Of Silicone Network Architecture On Pseudobarnacle Attachment Strengths, Judith Stein, Kathryn Truby, Christina Darkangelo Wood, Michael Takemori, Michael Vallance, Geoffrey Swain, Christopher Kavanagh, Brett Kovach, Michael Schultz, Deborah Wiebe, Eric Holm, Jean Montemarano, Dean Wendt, Celia Smith, Anne Meyer Apr 2003

Structure-Property Relationships Of Silicone Biofouling-Release Coatings: Effect Of Silicone Network Architecture On Pseudobarnacle Attachment Strengths, Judith Stein, Kathryn Truby, Christina Darkangelo Wood, Michael Takemori, Michael Vallance, Geoffrey Swain, Christopher Kavanagh, Brett Kovach, Michael Schultz, Deborah Wiebe, Eric Holm, Jean Montemarano, Dean Wendt, Celia Smith, Anne Meyer

Biological Sciences

Model silicone foul-release coatings with controlled molecular architecture were evaluated to determine the effect of compositional variables such as filler loading and crosslink density on pseudobarnacle attachment strength. Pseudobarnacle adhesion values correlated with filler loadings in both condensation and hydrosilylation-cured silicones. Variation of crosslink density of hydrosilylation-cured silicones had an insignificant effect on attachment strength. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) indicated that the mode of failure upon detachment of the pseudobarnacle was dependent upon the crosslink density; samples with high crosslink density failed cohesively within the silicone.

A Growth Mixture Theory For Cartilage With Application To Growth-Related Experiments On Cartilage Explants, Stephen M. Klisch, Silvia S. Chen, Robert L. Sah, Anne Hoger

Mechanical Engineering

In this paper, we present a growth mixture model for cartilage. The main features of this model are illustrated in a simple equilibrium boundary-value problem that is chosen to illustrate how a mechanical theory of cartilage growth may be applied to growth-related experiments on cartilage explants. The cartilage growth mixture model describes the independent growth of the proteoglycan and collagen constituents due to volumetric mass deposition, which leads to the remodeling of the composition and the mechanical properties of the solid matrix. The model developed here also describes how the material constants of the collagen constituent depend on a scalar …

Mother-Child Conversation And Children's Understanding Of Biological And Nonbiological Changes In Size, Jennifer Jipson, Maureen A. Callanan Mar 2003

Mother-Child Conversation And Children's Understanding Of Biological And Nonbiological Changes In Size, Jennifer Jipson, Maureen A. Callanan

Psychology and Child Development

This article explores the ways that mothers and children from primarily middle-income European American backgrounds reason about events in which biological and nonbiological objects change in size. In Study 1, mother–child conversations were examined to investigate the events mothers described as growth, as well as the ways mothers explained events occurring in different domains. Findings indicate that although mothers primarily discussed events in domain-specific ways, they exhibited some domain blurring in their talk to children. In Study 2,3-year-old children (M = 3 years, 2 months) and 5-year-old children (M = 5 years) provided descriptions and explanations of the same events. …

Removal Of Pcr Inhibitors From Soil Dna By Chemical Flocculation, Michael D. Braid, Laura M. Daniels, Christopher L. Kitts Mar 2003

Removal Of Pcr Inhibitors From Soil Dna By Chemical Flocculation, Michael D. Braid, Laura M. Daniels, Christopher L. Kitts

Biological Sciences

Extracting high-purity DNA directly from soil has become essential for the study of microorganisms in environmental samples. However, many soils contain compounds that inhibit enzymes involved in manipulating DNA. In this study, chemical flocculation using multivalent cations was investigated as a potential method for eliminating soil-based inhibitors during the extraction process. The addition of AlNH4(SO4)2 during extraction significantly reduced the co-purification of PCR inhibitors with minimal loss of DNA yield.

Vegetation Establishment For Erosion Control Under Simulated Rainfall, Brent G. Hallock, Misty Scharff, Steve Rein, Kaila Dettman Feb 2003

Vegetation Establishment For Erosion Control Under Simulated Rainfall, Brent G. Hallock, Misty Scharff, Steve Rein, Kaila Dettman

Earth and Soil Sciences

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) manages rights of ways that transect 41 m H (101m ac) and span over 3000 m (9000 ft) in elevation from seashore to sup alpine. There are approximately 4,900 native and 1,000 naturalized alien plant species in California. Only a few hundred are reliably useful in erosion and sediment control. Specifying native and naturalized vegetation mixes for use in hydroseeding or plug planting in conjunction with mechanical erosion control methods can have varying result for minimizing accelerated soil erosion. To investigate these factors, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, in conjunction with Caltrans and CSU, …
