The Impact Of California's Changing Environmental Regulations On Timber Harvest Planning Costs, Richard P. Thompson, Christopher Dicus Mar 2005

The Impact Of California's Changing Environmental Regulations On Timber Harvest Planning Costs, Richard P. Thompson, Christopher Dicus

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

The primary purpose of this study is to establish basic and supportable information on the impact of environmental regulations on California’s forest products industry. More specifically, the study focused on the effects of changing forest practice regulations on timber harvest planning and preparation costs. A survey of wood-processing and forestry consulting firms was conducted in the Summer and early Fall, 2004 seeking data on Timber Harvest Plan (THP) preparation costs, a major component of the transactions cost in California’s timber market. Despite the short data collection period, 607 sample observations were obtained. Analysis of the sample data clearly indicate significant …

Preparation Of 2s,3s-N-Isobutyl-N-(2-Hydroxy-3-Amino-4-Phenylbutyl)-P-Nitrobenzenesulfonylamide Hydrochloride And Other Derivatives Of 2-Hydroxy-1,3-Diamines, Aslam A. Malik, Hasan Palandoken, Joy A. Stringer, Roland P. Carlson, John Leach, Thomas G. Archibald, Robert G. Miotke Feb 2005

Preparation Of 2s,3s-N-Isobutyl-N-(2-Hydroxy-3-Amino-4-Phenylbutyl)-P-Nitrobenzenesulfonylamide Hydrochloride And Other Derivatives Of 2-Hydroxy-1,3-Diamines, Aslam A. Malik, Hasan Palandoken, Joy A. Stringer, Roland P. Carlson, John Leach, Thomas G. Archibald, Robert G. Miotke

Chemistry and Biochemistry

The present invention provides a new process for the preparation of 2S,3S-N-isobutyl-N-(2-hydroxy-3-amino-4phenylbutyl)- p-nitrobenzenesulfonylamide hydrochloride, wherein this compound is prepared directly from the chloromethylalcohol. Importantly, the process of the present invention results in higher yields of 2S,3S-N-isobutyl-N-(2hydroxy -3 -amino -4-phenylbutyl) -pnitrobenzenesulfonylamide hydrochloride without sacrificing its purity. The processes of the present invention can be used to prepare not only the 2S,3S-derivative, but also the 2R,3S-, 2S,2R- and the 2R,3R-derivatives.

Hybrid Xerogel Films As Novel Coatings For Antifouling And Fouling Release, Ying Tang, John A. Finlay, Gregory L. Kowalke, Anne E. Meyer, Frank V. Bright, Maureen E. Callow, James A. Callow, Dean E. Wendt, Michael R. Detty Feb 2005

Hybrid Xerogel Films As Novel Coatings For Antifouling And Fouling Release, Ying Tang, John A. Finlay, Gregory L. Kowalke, Anne E. Meyer, Frank V. Bright, Maureen E. Callow, James A. Callow, Dean E. Wendt, Michael R. Detty

Biological Sciences

Hybrid sol-gel-derived xerogel films prepared from 45/55 (mol ratio) n-propyltrimethoxysilane (C3-TMOS)/tetramethylorthosilane (TMOS), 2/98 (mol ratio) bis[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]-ethylenediamine (enTMOS)/tetraethylorthosilane (TEOS), 50/50 (mol ratio) n-octyltriethoxysilane (C8-TEOS)/TMOS, and 50/50 (mol ratio) 3,3,3-trifluoropropyltrimethoxysilane (TFP-TMOS)/TMOS were found to inhibit settlement of zoospores of the marine fouling alga Ulva (syn. Enteromorpha) relative to settlement on acid-washed glass and give greater release of settled zoospores relative to glass upon exposure to pressure from a water jet. The more hydrophobic 50/50 C8-TEOS/TMOS xerogel films had the lowest critical surface tension by comprehensive contact angle analysis and gave significantly greater release of 8-day Ulva sporeling biomass after exposure to …

Day Vs. Night Sampling For Spiders In Grape Vineyards, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane Jan 2005

Day Vs. Night Sampling For Spiders In Grape Vineyards, Michael J. Costello, Kent M. Daane

Horticulture and Crop Science

We compared day sampling (between 0700 and 1100) and night sampling (between 1900 and 2300) of spiders on grapevines in a California vineyard in 1993 and 1994, shaking spiders from the vines onto a drop cloth and vacuuming them up. Pooled density of the seven most abundant spider species did not differ significantly between day and night sampling, nor did density of Cheiracanthium inclusum (Miturgidae), Trachelas pacificus (Corrinidae), Oxyopes spp. (Oxyopidae) or Neoscona oaxacensis (Araneidae). Under day sampling Metaphidippus vitis (Salticidae) was 60% more abundant and Hololena nedra (Agelenidae) more than 2.5 fold more abundant than under night sampling. Daytime …

Relationship Between Habitat Distribution, Growth Rate, And Plasticity In Congeneric Larval Dragonflies, S. J. Mccauley Jan 2005

Relationship Between Habitat Distribution, Growth Rate, And Plasticity In Congeneric Larval Dragonflies, S. J. Mccauley

Biological Sciences

The relationship between habitat distribution, growth rate, and plasticity was examined in the larvae of three species of dragonfly in the genus Libellula L., 1758. Growth rates were compared under three conditions: in the absence of predation risk, in the presence of sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus Rafinesque, 1819; Pisciformes: Centrachidae), and in the presence of invertebrate predators. I assessed how the habitat distributions of the three species of dragonfly, specifically how commonly they occur with fish, were related to growth rates and to the level of growth plasticity under different levels of perceived predation risk. There was a negative relationship …
