Lutein Exposure, In Ovo Or In The Diet, Reduces Parameters Of Inflammation In The Liver And Spleen Laying-Type Chicks (Gallus Gallus Domesticus), L.S. Meriwether, B. D. Humphrey, D. G. Peterson, K. C. Klasing, E. A. Koutsos

Animal Science

These trials examined whether the demonstrated effects of embryonic and dietary carotenoid exposure on the inflammatory immune response in fast growing chickens also occur in slow growing chickens. The systemic and local inflammatory responses of chicks were examined in two experiments with two in ovo lutein levels (C+, carotenoid replete; or C−, carotenoid-deplete), two dietary lutein levels (0 or 40 mg lutein/kg diet), and two inflammatory challenges [no exposure or lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-vaccinated]. At 24 h after LPS vaccination, spleen weight was not affected by diet or in ovo lutein, but liver weight increased from C+ eggs (p < 0.01), and in LPS-vaccinated chicks fed 0 mg lutein (p < 0.05), but not in chicks fed 40 mg lutein. Plasma carotenoids and liver carotenoids were reduced post-LPS (p < 0.05). Splenic IL-6 mRNA abundance was the greatest post-LPS in C− chicks fed 40 mg lutein vs. C+ chicks fed 40 mg lutein (p < 0.05). Hepatic IL-6, iNOS and TGFβ and splenic iNOS and TGFβ were not …

Solving The Low Dimensional Smoluchowski Equation With A Singular Value Basis Set, Gregory E. Scott, Martin Gruebele Oct 2010

Solving The Low Dimensional Smoluchowski Equation With A Singular Value Basis Set, Gregory E. Scott, Martin Gruebele

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Reaction kinetics on free energy surfaces with small activation barriers can be computed directly with the Smoluchowski equation. The procedure is computationally expensive even in a few dimensions. We present a propagation method that considerably reduces computational time for a particular class of problems: when the free energy surface suddenly switches by a small amount, and the probability distribution relaxes to a new equilibrium value. This case describes relaxation experiments. To achieve efficient solution, we expand the density matrix in a basis set obtained by singular value decomposition of equilibrium density matrices. Grid size during propagation is reduced from (100–1000) …

The Schizophrenic Solution: Dialectics Of Neurosis And Anti-Psychiatric Animus In Ralph Ellison’S Invisible Man, J. Bradford Campbell Oct 2010

The Schizophrenic Solution: Dialectics Of Neurosis And Anti-Psychiatric Animus In Ralph Ellison’S Invisible Man, J. Bradford Campbell

English

This essay argues that Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man (1952)provides promising ground and a certain imperative to investigatethe underexamined intersections between literature and the historyof psychiatry. Especially where African American literatureis concerned, there has been a general reluctance to approachthese categories together, even while anecdotally history recordsnumerous engagements between the two. Ellison, for example, worked closely with Richard Wright and Dr. Fredric Wertham toestablish Harlem's LaFargue Clinic, the first and, in its time, only such institution committed to providing modern psychiatricservices to any and all who needed them. Ellison found in theclinic's practices a model of social psychiatry that did muchto address the …

Comparisons Of Fish Species Inside And Outside Of Marine Protected Areas Off The South Central Coast Of California, David E. Rasmussen

Master's Theses

COMPARISONS OF FISH SPECIES INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF MARINE PROTECTED AREAS OFF THE SOUTH CENTRAL COAST OF CALIFORNIA

David E. Rasmussen

From 2004-2008 and 2008-2009 Cal Poly University researchers conducted two separate tag and recapture studies of nearshore fish populations along California’s central coast. Three locations were sampled that have experienced different degrees of fishing pressure. Big Creek MPA has been closed to all fishing from 1993 onwards and is the farthest from port of all locations. Cambria lies closest to port of the three locations and because of this has the highest fishing pressure. Piedras Blancas lies midway between …

Development Of A Subject Specific Finite Element Model Used To Predict The Effects Of A Single Leg Extension Exercise, Garrett Thomas Gleeson Oct 2010

Development Of A Subject Specific Finite Element Model Used To Predict The Effects Of A Single Leg Extension Exercise, Garrett Thomas Gleeson

Master's Theses

The study presented attempts to prove the concept that mechanical changes in the structure of a bone can be predicted for a specific exercise by a subject specific model created from CT data, MRI data, EMG data, and a physiologic FE model. Previous work generated a subject specific FE model of a femur via CT and MRI data as well as created a set of subject specific biomechanical muscle forces that are required to perform a single leg extension exercise. The FE model and muscle forces were implemented into a single leg extension FE code (ABAQUS) along with a specialized …

Process Characterization Of The Reactive-Ion Etching Of Borosilicate Glass For Microfluidic Channels, Ann Christine Huang Sep 2010

Process Characterization Of The Reactive-Ion Etching Of Borosilicate Glass For Microfluidic Channels, Ann Christine Huang

Master's Theses

The ability to work with small amounts of fluids is an emerging technology that can greatly benefit the biomedical industry, diagnostics, and society as a whole. Typically, these microfluidic devices are fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Although it is optically clear, relatively inert, and easy to manipulate, PDMS does have its limitations. These include its tendency to swell when it comes in contact with certain chemicals and its hydrophobicity, which makes it difficult to analyze aqueous samples. Glass is an alternative material that addresses both issues. Etching is used to create these channels in glass. Wet etching procedures are typically isotropic …

Meta-Analysis Of The Heterogeneity In Association Of Drd4 7-Repeat Allele And Ad/Hd: Stronger Association With Ad/Hd Combined Type, Taylor F. Smith

Psychology and Child Development

The purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine whether association studies between attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) and the dopamine receptor 4 gene 7-repeat (DRD4 7R) allele vary systematically based on study characteristics. A total of 27 empirical studies with 28 distinct samples using either case–control or family-based association analyses were included. Consistent with previous meta-analytic work [Gizer et al. (2009), Hum Genet 126:51–90], the DRD4 7R allele was associated with AD/HD across studies (OR = 1.33; 95% CI = 1.16–1.53, z = 4.04, P = 0.00005) and there was significant systematic variability among studies (Q = 54.24; P = …

Flores, Michael E. Stender, Kevin M. Stewart, Lauren M. Nelson, Albert C. Chen, Koichi Masuda, Scott J. Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch, Robert L. Sah

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanisms of articular cartilage growth and maturation have been elucidated by studying composition-function dynamics during in vivo development and in vitro culture with stimuli such as insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1). This study tested the hypothesis that IGF-1 and TGF-β1 regulate immature cartilage compressive moduli and Poisson’s ratios in a manner consistent with known effects on tensile properties. Bovine calf articular cartilage from superficial-articular (S) and middle-growth (M) regions were analyzed fresh or following culture in medium with IGF-1 or TGF-β1. Mechanical properties in confined (CC) and unconfined (UCC) compression, cartilage matrix composition, and explant …

Multi-Frequency Processing For Lumen Enhancement With Wideband Intravascular Ultrasound, Rory A. Carrillo Sep 2010

Multi-Frequency Processing For Lumen Enhancement With Wideband Intravascular Ultrasound, Rory A. Carrillo

Master's Theses

The application of high frequency ultrasound is the key to higher resolution intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) images. The need to further improve the IVUS spatial resolution may drive the transducer center frequency even higher than the current 40 MHz range. However, increasing the center frequency may be challenging as it leads to stronger scattering echoes from blood. The high level of blood scattering echoes may obscure the arterial lumen and make image interpretation difficult. Blood backscatter levels increase with transmission center frequency at a much greater rate compared to arterial tissue. These different frequency dependencies provide a potential method to distinguish …

My Mr. 50s, Jaclyn Burt Aug 2010

My Mr. 50s, Jaclyn Burt

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

In her essay “My Mr. 50s,” author Jaclyn Burt uses vivid descriptions to explore how a favorite accessory helped shape her identity. Do any of these descriptions stand out to you? If so, why? How does Burt’s use of language bring the relationship between objects and the construction of the self to life for the reader?

Although the author is writing about her glasses, do more universal themes emerge? She discusses the way the glasses helped create an identity for her, but says, “ultimately you’re the one that changes you.” What do you think she means by this? As you …

An International Challenge, Rosalia Rochon Aug 2010

An International Challenge, Rosalia Rochon

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

Rosalia Rochon profiles Cal Poly faculty member Dr. Peggy Papathakis and her sincere concern for public health. What aspects of Papathakis’s personality does Rochon emphasize in this profile, and how does Rochon use specific events to support her claims about Papathakis? A major focus in this essay is Papathakis’s work with HIV-infected mothers and infants. How would the initial focus of the essay shift if Papathakis’s HIV work had a more prominent position in the introduction? Consider how Rochon uses her personal feelings as support for Papathakis’s influential nature and desire to create change in the world beyond her academic …

Where Are The Crazy People?, Caitlin Lee

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

Caitlin Lee’s “Where Are the Crazy People?” focuses on Cal Poly Professor Lars Tomanek’s commitment to and passion for the environment. The author organizes her discussion according to a pattern of carefully selected responses to the interview questions that illustrate a particular depiction of her subject. This strategy of relying on Dr. Tomanek’s responses results in a sense of immediacy for the reader, in effect providing the audience a privileged glimpse into the interview and the subject’s worldview. Also, because ideas are sequenced analytically and rhetorically, not strictly chronologically, the essay maintains its focus on the analytical thesis by using …

Plan B For America, Amelia Wing Aug 2010

Plan B For America, Amelia Wing

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

In her persuasive essay, “Plan B for America,” Amelia Wing offers a carefully researched, formal argument. Notice how the essay’s thesis is revealed gradually, in three steps. What rhetorical purpose does this technique serve? Is it effective? Wing’s discussion offers explicit connections to the essay’s thesis in every body paragraph—without restating the thesis. Her argument is primarily logos based in the body: the essay’s approach to the topic is clinical and objective. She leaves herself out of the discussion by not developing her ethos and maintains an impersonal tone throughout. What sort of audience would respond positively to this approach? …

Novel Polymer Coupling Chemistry Based Upon Latent Cysteine-Like Residues And Thiazolidine Chemistry, Jospeh S. Carlson, Megan R. Hill, Taiga Young, Philip Costanzo Aug 2010

Novel Polymer Coupling Chemistry Based Upon Latent Cysteine-Like Residues And Thiazolidine Chemistry, Jospeh S. Carlson, Megan R. Hill, Taiga Young, Philip Costanzo

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Chain end functional polymers were prepared via reversible addition–fragmentation transfer (RAFT) polymerization techniques that were further chain extended with acrylonitrile. Under reducing conditions, latent cysteine-like residues were exposed at the chain ends. A variety of reduction conditions were explored and base polymers were then tethered together via thiazolidine chemistry.

Evaluating Effectiveness Of Best Management Practices To Control Accelerated Sedimentation Of The Morro Bay Estuary, Misgana K. Muleta Aug 2010

Evaluating Effectiveness Of Best Management Practices To Control Accelerated Sedimentation Of The Morro Bay Estuary, Misgana K. Muleta

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Morro Bay estuary, located on the central Coast of California approximately half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco, is one of the most important wetlands on the west Coast as it supports wide variety of habitats including numerous sensitive and endangered plant and animal species. Various studies have identified accelerated erosion and subsequent sedimentation as a major threat for sustainability of the bay. Watershed disturbances caused by agricultural activities are believed to be one of the major causes of the accelerated erosion and sedimentation. More than 200 conservation practices have been installed in the watershed since the mid-1990 …

Notonecta Exhibit Threat-Sensitive, Predator-Induced Dispersal, Shannon J. Mccauley, Locke Rowe Aug 2010

Notonecta Exhibit Threat-Sensitive, Predator-Induced Dispersal, Shannon J. Mccauley, Locke Rowe

Biological Sciences

Dispersal is a central process determining community structure in heterogeneous landscapes, and species interactions within habitats may be a major determinant of dispersal. Although the effects of species interactions on dispersal within habitats have been well studied, how species interactions affect the movement of individuals between habitats in a landscape has received less attention. We conducted two experiments to assess the extent to which predation risk affects dispersal from an aquatic habitat by a flight-capable semi-aquatic insect (Notonecta undulata). Exposure to non-lethal (caged) fish fed conspecifics increased dispersal rates in N. undulata. Moreover, dispersal rate was positively correlated with the …
