Finlay, Anne E. Meyer, Gilbert C. Walker, Dean E. Wendt, Maureen E. Callow, James A. Callow, Frank V. Bright, Michael R. Detty

Biological Sciences

Mixtures of n-octadecyltrimethoxysilane (C18, 1-5 mole-%), n-octyltriethoxysilane (C8) and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) gave xerogel surfaces of varying topography. The 1:49:50 C18/C8/TEOS xerogel formed 100-400-nm-wide, 2-7-nm deep pores by AFM while coatings with ≥3% C18 were free of such features. Segregation of the coating into alkane-rich and alkane-deficient regions in the 1:49:50 C18/C8/TEOS xerogel was observed by IR microscopy. Immersion in ASW for 48 h gave no statistical difference in surface energy for the 1:49:50 C18/C8/TEOS xerogel and a significant increase for the 50:50 C8/TEOS xerogel. Settlement of barnacle cyprids and removal of juvenile barnacles, settlement of zoospores of the …

Observed And Modeled Bio-Optical, Bioluminescent, And Physical Properties During A Coastal Upwelling Event In Monterey Bay, California, Igor Shulman, Mark A. Moline, Bradley Penta, Stephanie Anderson, Matthew Oliver, Steven H.D. Haddock

Biological Sciences

During spring and summer time, coastal upwelling influences circulation and ecosystem dynamics of the Monterey Bay, California, which is recognized as a National Marine Sanctuary. Observations of physical, bio‐optical properties (including bioluminescence) together with results from dynamical biochemical and bioluminescence models are used to interpret the development of the upwelling event during August 2003 in Monterey Bay, California. Observations and the biochemical model show the development of a phytoplankton bloom in the southern portion of Monterey Bay. Model results show an increase of nutrients in the southern portion of the bay, where nutrient‐rich water masses are brought in by the …

Physical Habitat And Social Conditions Across A Coral Reef Shape Spatial Patterns Of Intraspecific Behavioral Variation In A Demersal Fish, Meagan N. Schrandt, Kristin M. Hardy, Kaitlin M. Johnson, Sean C. Lema Jan 2011

Physical Habitat And Social Conditions Across A Coral Reef Shape Spatial Patterns Of Intraspecific Behavioral Variation In A Demersal Fish, Meagan N. Schrandt, Kristin M. Hardy, Kaitlin M. Johnson, Sean C. Lema

Biological Sciences

As coral reef ecosystems decline in health worldwide, reef-associated fishes are being impacted by changes to their coral reef habitats. While previous studies have shown coral reef structure to affect the demography of reef fishes, changes in reef conditions may also impact the behavior of reef fishes as they cope with altered habitats. In this study, we examined spatial patterns of intraspecific behavioral variation in the bicolor damselfish (Stegastes partitus) across the fringing reefs of Curaçao (Caribbean Sea), and explored how this behavioral variation associated with physical and social conditions on the reef. Principal components analysis (PCA) condensed …

The Deadly Effects Of ‘‘Nonlethal’’ Predators, Shannon J. Mccauley, Locke Rowe, Marie-Josee Fortin Jan 2011

The Deadly Effects Of ‘‘Nonlethal’’ Predators, Shannon J. Mccauley, Locke Rowe, Marie-Josee Fortin

Biological Sciences

Nonconsumptive predator effects are widespread and include plasticity as well as general stress responses. Caged predators are often used to estimate nonconsumptive effects, and numerous studies have focused on the larval stages of animals with complex life cycles. However, few of these studies test whether nonconsumptive predator effects, including stress responses, are exclusively sublethal. Nor have they assessed whether these effects extend beyond the larval stage, affecting success during stressful life-history transitions such as metamorphosis. We conducted experiments with larvae of a dragonfly (Leucorrhinia intacta) that exhibits predator-induced plasticity to assess whether the mere presence of predators affects …

Better Biomolecule Thermodynamics From Kinetics, Kiran Girdhar, Gregory Scott, Yann R. Chemla, Martin Gruebele Jan 2011

Better Biomolecule Thermodynamics From Kinetics, Kiran Girdhar, Gregory Scott, Yann R. Chemla, Martin Gruebele

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Protein stability is measured by denaturation: When solvent conditions are changed (e.g., temperature, denaturant concentration, or pH) the protein population switches between thermodynamic states. The resulting denaturation curves have baselines. If the baselines are steep, nonlinear, or incomplete, it becomes difficult to characterize protein denaturation. Baselines arise because the chromophore probing denaturation is sensitive to solvent conditions, or because the thermodynamic states evolve structurally when solvent conditions are changed, or because the barriers are very low (downhill folding). Kinetics can largely eliminate such baselines: Relaxation of chromophores, or within thermodynamic states, is much faster than the transition over activation …

Lichens Of The Callahan Mine, A Copper- And Zinc-Enriched Superfund Site In Brooksville, Maine, U.S.A., Nishanta Rajakaruna, Tanner B. Harris, Stephen R. Clayden, Alison C. Dibble, Fred C. Olday Jan 2011

Lichens Of The Callahan Mine, A Copper- And Zinc-Enriched Superfund Site In Brooksville, Maine, U.S.A., Nishanta Rajakaruna, Tanner B. Harris, Stephen R. Clayden, Alison C. Dibble, Fred C. Olday

Biological Sciences

Metal-enriched habitats often harbor physiologically distinct biotas able to tolerate and accumulate toxic metals. Plants and lichens that accumulate metals have served as effective indicators of ecosystem pollution. Whereas the diversity of metal-tolerant lichens has been well documented globally, the literature of metal-tolerant lichen communities for eastern North America is limited. We examined the lichen flora of the Callahan Mine, a Cu-, Pb-, and Zn-enriched superfund site in Brooksville, Hancock County, Maine, U.S.A. Through collections along transects across metal-contaminated areas of the mine, we documented 76 species of lichens and related fungi. Fifty species were saxicolous, 26 were terricolous. Forty-three …

Environmental Proteomics: Changes In The Proteome Of Marine Organisms In Response To Environmental Stress, Pollutants, Infection, Symbiosis, And Development, Lars Tomanek Jan 2011

Environmental Proteomics: Changes In The Proteome Of Marine Organisms In Response To Environmental Stress, Pollutants, Infection, Symbiosis, And Development, Lars Tomanek

Biological Sciences

Environmental proteomics, the study of changes in the abundance of proteins and their post-translational modifications, has become a powerful tool for generating hypotheses regarding how the environment affects the biology of marine organisms. Proteomics discovers hitherto unknown cellulareffects of environmental stressors such as changes in thermal, osmotic, and anaerobic conditions. Proteomic analyses have advanced the characterization of the biological effects of pollutants and identified comprehensive and pollutant-specific sets of biomarkers, especially those highlighting post-translational modifications. Proteomic analyses of infected organisms have highlighted the broader changes occurring during immune responses and how the same pathways are attenuated during the maintenance of …

Shoot And Cluster Correlation Among Pinot Noir Clones, James Mcgarry Jan 2011

Shoot And Cluster Correlation Among Pinot Noir Clones, James Mcgarry

Horticulture and Crop Science

There are 43 clones of Pinot Noir currently published by the National Technical Institution for Viticultural Improvement in France (ENTAV) and over 75 selections from Foundation Plant Services (FPS) at UC Davis. Viticulturists speculate that there are anywhere from 200 – 1,000 genetic variants that may exist for any given grape variety. An important part of vineyard management is crop estimation. The purpose of this project is to see if there is correlation in the number of shoots a vine produces and the number of clusters it produces and comparing that correlation with seven different Pinot Noir clones. The clones …

The Proteomic Response Of Sea Squirts (Genus Ciona Congeners) To Heat Stress: Evidence For Differential Thermal Sensitivities, Loredana Serafini Jan 2011

The Proteomic Response Of Sea Squirts (Genus Ciona Congeners) To Heat Stress: Evidence For Differential Thermal Sensitivities, Loredana Serafini

Master's Theses

The sea squirts Ciona intestinalis and C. savignyi have disparate distribution patterns, which may result from differences in their thermal tolerance limits. Because C. intestinalis, an almost cosmopolitan species, has a more widespread distribution, it is thought that it is better adapted to endure a wide range of temperatures. In order to compare the heat stress response between these two congeners, we studied global changes in protein expression, using a proteomics approach. To characterize the response to extreme heat stress, animals of both species were exposed to temperatures of 22°C, 25°C, and 28°C for 6 h, and then were …

Wildlife Deterrent System: The "Scare Wave" Audio Deterrent System, Ferdd Mari C. Lansang, Kevin Wong

Electrical Engineering

The “Wildlife Deterrent System – The “SCARE WAVE” Audio Deterrent System” project involved working with a client, Mr. Robert Alberti, who requested the production of a device that would be used to scare away wildlife around his property, namely the Acorn Woodpecker. It was specified that this device be weatherproof and able to produce a 75 dB gunshot sound, when remotely triggered, which would cover a 30 ft radius circle of area. However, we have taken these specifications and went above and beyond with the final product. Our final product is weatherproofed and able to produce four user-specifiable, via provided …

A Basic Theory Of Benford’S Law, Arno Berger, Theodore P. Hill Jan 2011

A Basic Theory Of Benford’S Law, Arno Berger, Theodore P. Hill

Research Scholars in Residence

Drawing from a large, diverse body of work, this survey presents a comprehensive and unified introduction to the mathematics underlying the prevalent logarithmic distribution of significant digits and significands, often referred to as Benford’s Law (BL) or, in a special case, as the First Digit Law. The invariance properties that characterize BL are developed in detail. Special attention is given to the emergence of BL in a wide variety of deterministic and random processes. Though mainly expository in nature, the article also provides strengthened versions of, and simplified proofs for, many key results in the literature. Numerous intriguing problems …

Igniting A Global Change With The Innovated Eco-Behavioral Model, Colby B. Kuvara Jan 2011

Igniting A Global Change With The Innovated Eco-Behavioral Model, Colby B. Kuvara

Social Sciences

My senior project paper is an analysis of the impact of Global Climate Change on modern social behaviors of rural communities, society at large, and international aid relations between developed and underdeveloped countries. I propose that it is possible that the most effective solutions to the environmental crisis actually focus on social problems, and most importantly, should place special emphasis on women in rural communities. The three primary areas for solutions to address are the implementation of improved technology, investment of financial capital, and fostering an attitude of Global Solidarity/New Humanism. While the first two elements are not foreign concepts …

The Illustrated Guide Of Southern California Hardy Succulents, Darren Chard, Zhanna Safiulina Jan 2011

The Illustrated Guide Of Southern California Hardy Succulents, Darren Chard, Zhanna Safiulina

Horticulture and Crop Science

The Southern California area is experiencing increasing water shortages resulting in the need for plant material that has a high ornamental value as well as a low water requirement. The objectives of our project were to find, plant, and observe succulent plant material in the Southern California area to determine which succulents have a low water requirement, are low maintenance, disease and pest resistant, while adding beauty to the landscape. Succulent plant material was planted and observed in La Habra Heights, Newport Beach, and Laguna Beach to provide a range of climate zones. After two years of observing the plant …

The Effects Of Anti-Price Gouging Legislation On Supply Chain Dynamics, Jason Edward Maynard Jan 2011

The Effects Of Anti-Price Gouging Legislation On Supply Chain Dynamics, Jason Edward Maynard

Master's Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to model the effects of anti-price gouging (APG) legislation on the costs to businesses during the recovery period of a disaster. A system dynamics model of a business’s replenishment procedures is used to simulate the effects of APG legislation on business performance. Economists have published expansive research on the effects of price ceilings on supply and demand, but there is little research evidence on the operational consequences of price ceiling legislation on business costs. APG legislation increases consumer’s forward buying and shortage gaming after a disaster by removing price incentives to be frugal. Forward …

Adaptive Divergence In The Thyroid Hormone Signaling Pathway In The Stickleback Radiation, Jun Kitano, Sean C. Lema, J. Adam Luckenbach, Seiichi Mori, Yui Kawagishi, Makoto Kusakabe, Penny Swanson, Catherine L. Peichel Dec 2010

Adaptive Divergence In The Thyroid Hormone Signaling Pathway In The Stickleback Radiation, Jun Kitano, Sean C. Lema, J. Adam Luckenbach, Seiichi Mori, Yui Kawagishi, Makoto Kusakabe, Penny Swanson, Catherine L. Peichel

Biological Sciences

During adaptive radiations, animals colonize diverse environments, which requires adaptation in multiple phenotypic traits. Because hormones mediate the dynamic regulation of suites of phenotypic traits, evolutionary changes in hormonal signaling pathways might contribute to adaptation to new environments. Here we report changes in the thyroid hormone signaling pathway in stream-resident ecotypes of threespine stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus), which have repeatedly evolved from ancestral marine ecotypes. Stream-resident fish exhibit a lower plasma concentration of thyroid hormone and a lower metabolic rate, which is likely adaptive for permanent residency in small streams. The thyroid-stimulating hormone-β2 (TSHβ …

Dual Inhibition Of Sodium-Mediated Proton And Calcium Efflux Triggers Non-Apoptotic Cell Death In Malignant Gliomas, William Harley, Candace Floyd, Tamara Dunn, Xiao-Dong Zhang, Tsung-Yu Chen, Manu Hegde, Hasan Palandoken, Michael H. Nantz, Leonardo Leon, K.L. Carraway Iii, Bruce Lyeth, Fredric A. Gorin

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Malignant glioma cells maintain an elevated intracellular pH (pHi) within hypoxic–ischemic tumormicroenvironments through persistent activation of sodium–proton transport (McLean et al., 2000). Amiloride has been reported to selectively kill human malignant glioma cell lines but not primary astrocytes (Hegde et al., 2004). While amiloride reduces pHi of malignant gliomas by inhibiting isoform 1 of sodium–proton exchange (NHE1), direct acidification was shown to be cytostatic rather than cytotoxic. At cytotoxic concentrations, amiloride has multiple drug targets including inhibition of NHE1 and sodium–calciumexchange. Amiloride's glioma cytotoxicity can be explained, at least in part, by dual inhibition of NHE1 and …
