Brizzolara Creek Revegetation & Restoration Plan, Cailin O'Meara
Brizzolara Creek Revegetation & Restoration Plan, Cailin O'Meara
Earth and Soil Sciences
In 2009, a portion of the Cal Poly Farm Shop was removed to create a stream bank supported by rip-rap facing for Brizzolara Creek. However, weed eradication and revegetation measures were necessary to fully restore the riparian corridor. The Brizzolara Creek Revegetation and Restoration plan was implemented in winter 2011. The plant palette was composed of early successional native species including Salix lasiolepis, Salix laevigata, Populus balsamifera spp. trichocarpa, Rubus ursinus, Rhamnus californica, Baccharis pilularis, Sambucus mexicana, and Artemisia douglasiana. A monitoring plan will evaluate the relative success of this project in Spring 2014. The final success criteria for this …
Strategic Treatment Interruptions During Imatinib Treatment Of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, Dana C. Paquin, Peter S. Kim, Peter P. Lee, Doron Levy
Strategic Treatment Interruptions During Imatinib Treatment Of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, Dana C. Paquin, Peter S. Kim, Peter P. Lee, Doron Levy
Mathematics
Although imatinib is an effective treatment for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), and nearly all patients treated with imatinib attain some form of remission, imatinib does not completely eliminate leukemia. Moreover, if the imatinib treatment is stopped, most patients eventually relapse (Cortes et al. in Clin. Cancer Res. 11:3425–3432, 2005). In Kim et al. (PLoS Comput. Biol. 4(6):e1000095, 2008), the authors presented a mathematical model for the dynamics of CML under imatinib treatment that incorporates the anti-leukemia immune response. We use the mathematical model in Kim et al. (PLoS Comput. Biol. 4(6):e1000095, 2008) to study and numerically simulate strategic treatment interruptions …
Using Portfolio Theory To Assess Tradeoffs Between Return From Natural Capital And Social Equity Across Space, Benjamin S. Halpern, Crow White, Sarah E. Lester, Christopher Costello, Steven D. Gaines
Using Portfolio Theory To Assess Tradeoffs Between Return From Natural Capital And Social Equity Across Space, Benjamin S. Halpern, Crow White, Sarah E. Lester, Christopher Costello, Steven D. Gaines
Biological Sciences
Spatial variance in returns from natural resources, driven by resource dynamics and regulations, can have strong consequences for equitable delivery of value to individuals and communities. Yet resource management models implicitly weight returns equally across space, even when space is explicitly included in model dynamics and policy. Here we translate financial portfolio theory from the temporal to spatial realm and use it to quantify the inherent tradeoff between resource returns and social equity, defined as a more uniform distribution of resource value across space. We illustrate this approach with a marine case study of the Channel Islands, California, USA. Depending …

Distinct Microbiome In Pouchitis Compared To Healthy Pouches In Ulcerative Colitis And Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, Garrett C. Zella, Elizabeth J. Hait, Tiffany Glavan, Dirk Gevers, Doyle V. Ward, Christopher L. Kitts, Joshua R. Korzenik
Biological Sciences
Background: Pouchitis occurs in up to 50% of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) undergoing ileal pouch anal anastomosis (IPAA). Pouchitis rarely occurs in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) who undergo IPAA. Our aim was to compare mucosal and luminal flora in patients with UC-associated pouchitis (UCP), healthy UC pouches (HUC), and healthy FAP pouches (FAP).
Methods: Nineteen patients were enrolled in thi s cross-sectional study (nine UCP, tl1ree HUC, seven FAP). Patie nts with active pouchitis were identified using the Pouchitis Disease Activity Index (PDAI). Ileal pouch mucosal biopsies and fecal samples were analyzed with a 16S rDNA-based terminal …

Growing The Urban Ecosystem In Detroit, Michigan, Sean Basalyga
Growing The Urban Ecosystem In Detroit, Michigan, Sean Basalyga
Social Sciences
Many views of the future are seen as bleak and devoid of the life where once stood beauty and abundance. However, the Living Cities Design Competition challenges these views and calls for a vision of the future that inspires hope, biodiversity, and a healthy interaction between human and natural systems. We chose to redesign the city of Detroit, Michigan to be a living city by the year 2035. As the earth scientist on an interdisciplinary team, I acted as an ecological consultant. By developing the urban ecosystem of Detroit, a number of social, economical, and environmental problems can be solved. …
Vertex Centralities In Input-Output Networks Reveal The Structure Of Modern Economies, Florian Blochl, Fabian J. Theis, Fernando Vega-Redondo, Eric O'N. Fisher
Vertex Centralities In Input-Output Networks Reveal The Structure Of Modern Economies, Florian Blochl, Fabian J. Theis, Fernando Vega-Redondo, Eric O'N. Fisher
Economics
Input-output tables describe the flows of goods and services between the sectors of an economy. These tables can be interpreted as weighted directed networks. At the usual level of aggregation, they contain nodes with strong self-loops and are almost completely connected. We derive two measures of node centrality that are well suited for such networks. Both are based on random walks and have interpretations as the propagation of supply shocks through the economy. Random walk centrality reveals the vertices most immediately affected by a shock. Counting betweenness identifies the nodes where a shock lingers longest. The two measures differ in …

Traversing Swanton Road, 5th Ed., James A. West
Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources
Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

The Truth About Models: How Well Do Mechanical Models Mimic The Observed Gender Distributions In Two-Child Families?, William D. Stansfield, Matthew A. Carlton
The Truth About Models: How Well Do Mechanical Models Mimic The Observed Gender Distributions In Two-Child Families?, William D. Stansfield, Matthew A. Carlton
Biological Sciences
We question the use of mechanical models, such as coin flipping, to represent the probabilities of gender distributions in sibship families consisting of two children. Both the assumptions of the models and the reliability of the data should be evaluated. Using models without these critical evaluations may tend to perpetuate myths rather than elucidate biological realities.
Hierarchies Of Race And Gender In The French Colonial Empire, 1914–1946, Jennifer Anne Boittin, Christina Firpo, Emily Musil Church
Hierarchies Of Race And Gender In The French Colonial Empire, 1914–1946, Jennifer Anne Boittin, Christina Firpo, Emily Musil Church
History
This article looks at French Indochina, metropolitan France, and French West Africa from 1914 through 1946 to illustrate specific ways in which French colonial authority operated across the French empire. We look at how colonized people challenged the complex formal and informal hierarchies of race, class, and gender that French administrators and colonizers sought to impose upon them. We argue that both the French imperial prerogatives and colonized peoples' responses to them are revealed through directly comparing and contrasting various locales across the empire. Our case studies explore interracial families and single white women seeking compensation from the French in …

Intertwinings Of Death And Desire In Michele Soavi’S Dellamorte Dellamore, Douglas Keesey
Intertwinings Of Death And Desire In Michele Soavi’S Dellamorte Dellamore, Douglas Keesey
English
This article engages in an in-depth discussion of Michele Soavi's Dellamorte Dellamore/Cemetery Man, a 1993 film based on a bestselling novel and on Italy's most popular comic-book series (Dylan Dog). Close analysis reveals that, rather than being just another forgettable splatter movie or ridiculous horror comedy, this zombie thriller is a film of great psychosexual complexity, along the lines of Edgar Allan Poe's 'Ligeia' (1838) and Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo (1958). In Dellamorte Dellamore, horror becomes the vehicle for the female character's struggle with guilt over infidelity to her deceased husband, with fear of phallic sexuality and with masochistic …

Robot Ethics: Mapping The Issues For A Mechanized World, Patrick Lin, Keith Abney, George Bekey
Philosophy
As with other emerging technologies, advanced robotics brings with it new ethical and policy challenges. This paper will describe the flourishing role of robots in society—from security to sex—and survey the numerous ethical and social issues, which we locate in three broad categories: safety & errors, law & ethics, and social impact. We discuss many of these issues in greater detail in our forthcoming edited volume on robot ethics from MIT Press.
Nitric Oxide Synthesis By Chicken Macrophages Results In Coordinated Changes Of Multiple Arginine Transporters, Michael Moulds
Nitric Oxide Synthesis By Chicken Macrophages Results In Coordinated Changes Of Multiple Arginine Transporters, Michael Moulds
Master's Theses
Arginine transport is primarily mediated by the cationic amino acid transporters (CATs) in mammalian cells, but in aves the y+, b0,+ and B0,+ transport systems have also been observed. Arginine is the limiting catabolic substrate required for the production of nitric oxide (NO), a highly reactive compound that acts as a signaling molecule or killing compound. NO is synthesized by inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) by macrophages for pathogen clearance. In mammals, CAT-2B is responsible for ARG import in the macrophage for NO synthesis, but the chicken CAT-2B isoform does not transport ARG. Therefore the objective …

Shades Of Whiteness: Petits-Blancs And The Politics Of Military Allocations Distribution In World War I Colonial Cochinchina, Christina Firpo
Shades Of Whiteness: Petits-Blancs And The Politics Of Military Allocations Distribution In World War I Colonial Cochinchina, Christina Firpo
History
During World War I male French citizens in Cochinchina whom the colonial government had drafted to fight in Europe left their families behind in the colony. Through a complicated subsidies process, the government offered financial assistance to families impoverished by the draftee’s departure and the concomitant loss of income. Far from being a monolithic category, the colony’s poor white applicants, also known as petits-blancs, received varying government subsidies, depending on their family configurations. This article argues that the military allocations council’s judgments correlate with the petits-blancs applicants’ relationships to indigenous people and their adherence to traditional gender roles. To guard …
