Evaluation Of Decellularization Procedures For Porcine Arteries, Charles Clapp Apr 2012

Evaluation Of Decellularization Procedures For Porcine Arteries, Charles Clapp

Biomedical Engineering

Coronary artery disease has become the leading cause of death in the United States, with over 425,000 deaths in 2006. Stenting has evolved into the preferred preventative technique for myocardial infarction by opening up an occluded artery, due to its low invasiveness compared to the alternative of coronary artery bypass grafting. Bare metal stents have been improved by coating with anti-proliferative drugs to advance their effects, but even drug eluting stents still have a risk of restenosis, thrombus formation, and necessary revascularization. Continual advancement in stent design necessitates faster, effective pre-clinical evaluation techniques. Kristen Cardinal, Ph.D., developed the blood vessel …

Ecosystem Service Tradeoff Analysis Reveals The Value Of Marine Spatial Planning For Multiple Ocean Uses, Crow White, Benjamin S. Halpern, Carrie V. Kappel Mar 2012

Ecosystem Service Tradeoff Analysis Reveals The Value Of Marine Spatial Planning For Multiple Ocean Uses, Crow White, Benjamin S. Halpern, Carrie V. Kappel

Biological Sciences

Marine spatial planning (MSP) is an emerging responsibility of resource managers around the United States and elsewhere. A key proposed advantage of MSP is that it makes tradeoffs in resource use and sector (stakeholder group) values explicit, but doing so requires tools to assess tradeoffs. We extended tradeoff analyses from economics to simultaneously assess multiple ecosystem services and the values they provide to sectors using a robust, quantitative, and transparent framework. We used the framework to assess potential conflicts among offshore wind energy, commercial fishing, and whale-watching sectors in Massachusetts and identify and quantify the value from choosing optimal wind …

Toward A More Phronetic Leisure Science, Daniel Dustin, Keri Schwab, Jeff Rose Mar 2012

Toward A More Phronetic Leisure Science, Daniel Dustin, Keri Schwab, Jeff Rose

Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration

In this essay, we examine the assumptions underlying natural science, social science, and the humanities. More specifically, we suggest that social science in general and leisure science in particular be guided by a different set of assumptions than those guiding natural science and the humanities. Drawing on the Aristotelian idea of phronesis, we propose that value rationality more so than instrumental rationality guide social scientific inquiry, and that social science in general, and leisure science in particular, be viewed as a bridge between natural science and the humanities.

The Creation Of An Anodic Bonding Device Setup And Characterization Of The Bond Interface Through The Use Of The Plaza Test, Tim M. Mccrone Mar 2012

The Creation Of An Anodic Bonding Device Setup And Characterization Of The Bond Interface Through The Use Of The Plaza Test, Tim M. Mccrone

Master's Theses

Recently there has been an increased focus on the use of microfluidics for the synthesis of different products. One of the products proposed for synthesis is quantum dots. Microfluidics often uses Polydimethylsiloxane for structure in microfluidic chips, but quantum dots use octadecene in several synthesis steps. The purpose of this work was to create a lab setup capable of anodically bonding 4” diameter wafers, and to characterize the bond formed using the Plaza test chip so that microfluidic devices using glass and silicon as substrates could be created.

Two stainless steel electrodes placed on top of a hot plate were …

Simulation Of Blood Flow And Nanoparticle Transport In A Stenosed Carotid Bifurcation And Pseudo-Arteriole, Graham Doig, Guan H. Yeoh, Victoria Timchenko, Gary Rosengarten, Tracie J. Barber, Sherman C.P. Cheung Mar 2012

Simulation Of Blood Flow And Nanoparticle Transport In A Stenosed Carotid Bifurcation And Pseudo-Arteriole, Graham Doig, Guan H. Yeoh, Victoria Timchenko, Gary Rosengarten, Tracie J. Barber, Sherman C.P. Cheung

Aerospace Engineering

Numerical simulation of flow through a realistic bifurcated carotid artery geometry with a stenosis has been conducted for comparison to experimental measurements. The behaviour of simplified therapeutic nanoparticles in relatively low concentration was observed using a discrete particle approach. The role of size (diameters from 500 nm to 50 nm) in determining particle residence time and the potential for both desirable and undesirable wall interactions was investigated. It was found that mean particle residence time reduced with decreasing particle diameter, and the percentage of particles experiencing one or more wall interactions increased simultaneously. Further simulations were conducted on a scaled-down …

Feasibility Analysis For Electrically-Powered Hoverboard, Cameron Chan, Jason Cortez, Jay Lopez Mar 2012

Feasibility Analysis For Electrically-Powered Hoverboard, Cameron Chan, Jason Cortez, Jay Lopez

Aerospace Engineering

Composite materials are engineered by combining two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties in such a way that the constituents are still distinguishable, and not fully blended. Due to today’s high rising prices of gasoline and aviation fuel costs, many manufacturers have turned to the use of lightweight composites in their designs due to the advantages of the composite material, which include outstanding strength, excellent durability, high heat resistance, and significant weight reduction that the composite material properties hold. The purpose of this project is to design and construct a composite structure for an electrically-powered …

Science & The Senses: Perceptions & Deceptions, William D. Stansfield Mar 2012

Science & The Senses: Perceptions & Deceptions, William D. Stansfield

Biological Sciences

Science requires the acquisition and analysis of empirical (sense-derived) data. Given the same physical objects or phenomena, the sense organs of all people do not respond equally to these stimuli, nor do their minds interpret sensory signals identically. Therefore, teachers should develop lectures on human sensory systems that include some common examples of sensory limitations, variations, deficiencies, malfunctions, and diseases (as discussed herein) because they have important implications for conducting scientific investigations, science education, and introspection that are seldom included in biology textbooks. Students need to be made aware of the human tendency to self deception in order to avoid …

Potential For Barn Owl As Rodent Biological Control In Central California Vineyards, Hannah Tillmann Mar 2012

Potential For Barn Owl As Rodent Biological Control In Central California Vineyards, Hannah Tillmann

Biological Sciences

The pocket gopher (Thomomys bottae) and voles (Microtus spp.) cause significant economic damage to vineyards. In response, many growers have taken steps to attract Barn Owls (Tyto alba) to their properties to help keep these rodent populations in check. This research project investigated Barn Owl consumption of pocket gophers and voles in Central California vineyards in order to assess the efficiency of this integrated pest management strategy. I collected a total of 715 owl pellets from five vineyard locations in Templeton and Paso Robles, California over an eight-month period during nesting and post-fledging seasons. I …

Fishing Top Predators Indirectly Affects Condition And Reproduction In A Reef-Fish Community, S.M. Walsh, S.L. Hamilton, Bi. Ruttenberg, M.K. Donovan, S.A. Sandin

Biological Sciences

To examine the indirect effects of fishing on energy allocation in non-target prey species, condition and reproductive potential were measured for five representative species (two-spot red snapper Lutjanus bohar, arc-eye hawkfish Paracirrhites arcatus, blackbar devil Plectroglyphidodon dickii, bicolour chromis Chromis margaritifer and whitecheek surgeonfish Acanthurus nigricans) from three reef-fish communities with different levels of fishing and predator abundance in the northern Line Islands, central Pacific Ocean. Predator abundance differed by five to seven-fold among islands, and despite no clear differences in prey abundance, differences in prey condition and reproductive potential among islands were found. Body condition …

An Algorithm For Quantum Circuit Optimization, Raymond Garwei Wong Mar 2012

An Algorithm For Quantum Circuit Optimization, Raymond Garwei Wong

Computer Science and Software Engineering

In the past 20 years, many researchers shifted their focus to developing computers based on quantum mechanical phenomenon as current computers started to plateau in performance. Some problems such as integer factorization have been shown to perform much more efficiently on a quantum computer than on its classical counterpart. However, quantum computers will continue to remain the object of theoretical research unless it can be physically manifested, and quantum circuit optimization hopes to be a useful aid in turning the theory into a reality. My project looks at a possible approach to solving the issue of circuit optimization by incorporating …

Perceptions Of The Voluntarily Childless: The Negative Stigma Of An Unconventional Ideal, Alyssa N. Hook Mar 2012

Perceptions Of The Voluntarily Childless: The Negative Stigma Of An Unconventional Ideal, Alyssa N. Hook

Psychology and Child Development

This study examined the potential implications of religious affiliation on perceptions of voluntarily childless couples. Undergraduate students were given a vignette about an adult couple that either had children or that was childless, and were subsequently asked to complete questionnaires that rated the couple on a variety of personality dimensions. It was predicted that individuals who identify with pronatalist religious sects have more negative perceptions of those who are childless. There was a significant contrast in the views that Christian individuals held toward couples that were voluntarily childless versus those that had two children, suggesting that this religious affiliation is …

The Behavioral Ecology Of Estrus Signaling In Humans, Kylie Breuer Mar 2012

The Behavioral Ecology Of Estrus Signaling In Humans, Kylie Breuer

Social Sciences

When female primates are the most fertile, they show it by a swelling of the estrus, which is easily visible to other primates. The purpose of this is to demonstrate to male primates when the females are most likely to conceive, and therefore to reveal the best time for copulation. Human females, on the other hand, do not express as obvious of clues as to when they are the most fertile. As of recent, general knowledge has been that female humans have concealed ovulation, but there have been several studies that seem to prove otherwise. My senior project question is: …

The Proteomic Response Of Sea Squirts (Genus Ciona Congeners) To Hyposalinity Stress, James S. Koman Mar 2012

The Proteomic Response Of Sea Squirts (Genus Ciona Congeners) To Hyposalinity Stress, James S. Koman

Master's Theses

The ascidian species Ciona savignyi and C. intestinalis are invasive species but show interspecific differences in their population response to hypo-saline stress associated with heavy winter-run off events that are predicted to become more frequent due to climate change. Despite an almost world-wide distribution, C. intestinalis seems to be more susceptible to hypo-saline stress than the geographically more limited C. savignyi. Given that the genomes of both species are fully sequenced, we were able to compare their proteomic response to both acute and chronic salinity to characterize the mechanisms that are responsible for setting tolerance limits to hyposaline conditions …
