Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide) Hydrogels For Storage And Delivery Of Reagents To Paper-Based Analytical Devices, Haydn T. Mitchell, Spencer Schultz, Philip Costanzo, Andres W. Martinez

Chemistry and Biochemistry

The thermally responsive hydrogel N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide-cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) was developed and evaluated as a reagent storage and delivery system for microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (microPADs). PNIPAM was shown to successfully deliver multiple solutions to microPADs in specific sequences or simultaneously in laminar-flow configuration and was found to be suitable for delivering four classes of reagents to the devices: Small molecules, enzymes, antibodies and DNA. PNIPAM was also able to successfully deliver a series of standard glucose solutions to microPADs equipped to perform a colorimetric glucose assay. The results of these tests were used to produce an external calibration …

The Pioneer Of Santa Rosa Island, Andrea Martinez, Michael Perez, Kathryn Mceachern, Sarah Chaney, Ken Niessen

STAR Program Research Presentations

Santa Rosa Island which is part of the Channel Islands in California has a ranching history that goes as far back as the year 1843. While rich in history, the island is no longer “rich” in native plant populations due to the sheep, cattle and other livestock that once occupied the island. As a result of these grazers that the ranchers livelihood depended on, a great disturbance in the native plant population took place. It is up to plants such as Baccharis pilularis, commonly known as Coyote brush, to assist these endangered and threatened plants to once again flourish …

This project aims to explore the potential of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV’s) using NDVI imaging for crop monitoring and assess the feasibility of the process by developing a UAV with a NDVI camera to create NDVI maps from the aerial crop images. These maps will be cross referenced with …

A Lego® Brewster Angle Microscope For Quantitative Monolayer Film Analysis, Nicholas Benz Jul 2015

A Lego® Brewster Angle Microscope For Quantitative Monolayer Film Analysis, Nicholas Benz

Physics

In order to study single-molecule thick films and their phase behavior we built a Brewster Angle Microscope (BAM). BAM’s are inherently expensive due to their accuracy and precision. We built a fully functional BAM using Lego® Mindstorm® kits for the fraction of the price of a commercial BAM. And by utilizing the 10µm patented Lego® tolerance, comparable accuracy was attained. The BAM was mounted to a Langmuir-trough and will be used for laboratory experiments for optics and physical chemistry along with research on lung surfactant and on liquid crystals.

Traversing Swanton Road, 20th Ed., James A. West

Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

On The Dynamics Of Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia, The!Immune Response, And Multiple Drugs, John Shamshoian, David Kato, Caleb Miller

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a cancer that begins in the bone marrow and spreads to the bloodstream and other organs if left uncontrolled. Although most patients undergo some sort of remission with the standard drug imatinib, patients will inevitably relapse [1]. Many CML researchers utilize mathematical models to understand leukemia and immune-‐ response interaction and to create novel methods of treatment. We adopt a time-‐delay differential equation model, used by Michor et. al [2], which incorporates biologically significant parameters and leukemia –T-‐cell interactions. Inconveniently, the model is a system of nine nonlinear differential equations encompassing over two dozen parameters. …

Application Of Pyroprinting For Source Tracking Of E. Coli In Pennington Creek, Charles Moritz, Dillon Shapiro, Christopher Pann Jun 2015

Application Of Pyroprinting For Source Tracking Of E. Coli In Pennington Creek, Charles Moritz, Dillon Shapiro, Christopher Pann

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

The goal of this project is to determine the source of fecal contamination in Pennington Creek. Dangerously high numbers of E. coli were recorded in the creek by the Morro Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP) over the last 10 years. This is of particular concern because the creek runs directly through an outdoor school for K-12 education. One potential source of the contamination is the cattle in fields on either side of the creek for several miles, though they are supposedly kept out by fences. Another possibility is local wildlife—specifically wild turkeys, which roam around in flocks of over 100 …

Characterization Of Pressure-Driven And Electro-Kinetically Driven Flow In A Micro-Fluidic Chip Using Particle Imaging Velocimetry, Alexis Weckel Jun 2015

Characterization Of Pressure-Driven And Electro-Kinetically Driven Flow In A Micro-Fluidic Chip Using Particle Imaging Velocimetry, Alexis Weckel

Master's Theses

The flow profiles of pressure-driven and electro-kinetic driven flows were compared for a microfluidic chip. It was found that the pressure-driven flow had a parabolic profile while the electro-kinetic flow had a plug shaped flow profile. The measured velocities were similar to those determined by the Poiseuille flow model and the Helmholtz-Smoltchowski equation. Flow uniformity is very important for control in microfluidic mixers. Parabolic flow profiles lead to inconsistent reactions while the more uniform plug shape flow allow for a more steady reaction across the channel. Previous work had been performed to measure the flow of a solution of fluorescent …

Investigating The Cause Of Unique Mechanical Behavior In Platinum Alloy Guidewire Tips, Evan Borgeson, Alfred Rosen Jun 2015

Investigating The Cause Of Unique Mechanical Behavior In Platinum Alloy Guidewire Tips, Evan Borgeson, Alfred Rosen

Materials Engineering

The platinum alloy used by Abbott Vascular in guidewire tips exhibits a yielding behavior characterized by an abrupt transition from elastic to plastic zones and high ductility. This yielding behavior was hypothesized to be a result of one of three structural phenomena: ordering, solute strain aging, or interstitial strain aging. To test for these strengthening mechanisms in the wire, X-ray diffraction analysis, heat treatments, and tensile testing were completed. The wire has a diameter of 0.0025 inches and was supplied in two forms, the final stress relieved state, and as-drawn from the production line. Heat treatments were performed at 130 …
