Aesthetically Designed Maps: Development And Perception, Catherine Wang
Graphic Communication
This research explored the creative element of subway map creation in light of its effectiveness. Printed subway maps, used often for metropolitan cities and areas, are limited in physical dimension and scale, carrying minimal information. The New York, San Francisco Bay Area, Tokyo, Paris, London and Moscow subway maps highlight similar design and abstraction that fulfill the basic necessary elements for subway patrons. Over the years since the first metro map for each city was created, maps have become more simplified by removing physical land features and reference points to make way for expanding and new subway lines, stations, and …

If the template should be used, egardenseed.com will have the opportunity to incorporate their products, advice, and expertise into marketing and educational materials that can be shared with …
Creating Exact Bezier Representations Of Cst Shapes, David D. Marshall
Creating Exact Bezier Representations Of Cst Shapes, David D. Marshall
Aerospace Engineering
The paper presents a method of expressing CST shapes pioneered by Kulfan into standard Bezier curves and surfaces. Out of the seven standard shape classes identified by Kulfan as representable using CST curves, four of them, including airfoils, can be represented as Bezier curves exactly. For the other three, a convergent series expansion proves insufficient to achieve any practical accuracy, however these three classes are not the most commonly used of the CST classes. With the ability to express most common CST curves and surfaces as generic Bezier curves and surfaces, CST shapes can be used in CAD, solid modeling, …

Biomedical Engineering
Quality Life Plus is working with Team River Runner to develop an assistive guidance system for veterans who want to remain active by kayaking, after sustaining an injury that impairs vision. This system allows these veterans to complete a slalom speed race independent of a personal guide in the water. The system incorporates 3 stations that each contain a speaker connected to a microcontroller system covered by a Pelican Case on a custom made buoy. During the slalom race, a kayaker will travel from shore towards buoy #1 as it omits sound from the speaker. As the kayaker moves around …

Errors And Accuracy In Student Media: Identifying, Avoiding, And Correcting Common Reporting Errors, Sarah Gilmore
Errors And Accuracy In Student Media: Identifying, Avoiding, And Correcting Common Reporting Errors, Sarah Gilmore
Journalism
Given the changing nature of journalism in today’s society, a “sink or swim” mentality has been adopted across publications throughout the media – it is imperative to keep up-to-date with changes that occur throughout the industry, or the fate of a publication may be in jeopardy. One key factor in keeping a given media outlet afloat in these uncertain times in journalism is accuracy, which in turn affects a publication’s perceived credibility. In order to maintain readership, it is vital that publications maintain a high standard of accuracy in reporting, which can be severely altered by the inclusion of errors. …

Warehouse Redesign, Cristine Carmel Dewar
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
A young, growing biomedical company is expanding its warehouse space to keep up with the increasing production. This project’s goals were to recommend a layout and improve a process that would minimize the distance traveled by the material handlers, increase the safety of the warehouse by implementing visual controls, implement ergonomics to reduce chance of injury, and save money for the company. To achieve this first I familiarized myself with their current processes and department and the space required for their current and future production levels. Next I created two alternative layouts, the first (Layout A) to minimize distance and …
Wine Tasting Through Typography, Dayna Goldman
Wine Tasting Through Typography, Dayna Goldman
Graphic Communication
The purpose of this study is to find the connection, if any, between the design and typography of wine labels with the flavor attributes of the wine itself. If there is a lacking connection, wineries can use this information to better market their wines so that consumers know more about the wines they are purchasing and can make a more informed decision. This allows these wineries to better market themselves and differentiate from their competitors.
The research focuses mainly on smaller, local wineries because these are the businesses that need more assistance or direction in creating and marketing their brand. …

The Need For Effective Visual Communication: How Website Design Can Further The Success Of The Cal Poly Women’S Lacrosse Team, Bonnie J. Burtis
Journalism
This paper argues that an efficient and successfully built website is crucial to the future success of college sports websites. By focusing on the Cal Poly Women’s Lacrosse team and its website, visual communication research gives insight into what works and what does not. The fundamental and design elements examined include: text elements, site navigation, accessible links, presence of news, communication and graphics (visual design). These are the elements that promote success and efficiency. Compared to other websites built and maintained by teams in the women’s lacrosse league, Cal Poly’s lacks foundational website material. General website research proves this and …
The Library As A Student Research Site, Anna Gold
The Library As A Student Research Site, Anna Gold
Robert E. Kennedy Library
Studying students to understand how they find and use information is one of several newer assessment strategies that shift the focus of library research from the library to the user, with sometimes surprising results. Another way that libraries can engage in user-centered research is to offer the library as a student research site. The Kennedy Library at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has been used in recent years as a research site for undergraduate students, including individuals, groups, and courses, in fields that include architecture, business, and computer science. A case study will illustrate how a faculty member and students …

"Island Rhythm And Blues" Guitar Workbook, Amber Rose Francis
"Island Rhythm And Blues" Guitar Workbook, Amber Rose Francis
Art and Design
For my senior project I created a lesson plan workbook for The Guitar Gym to use with their 6-10 year old students. The workbook consists of 5 lessons that teach children musical concepts, and how to play a song called Island Rhythm and Blues on the guitar. Each lesson introduces new material, a variation of The Guitar Gym’s innovative teaching tool called The Spinner, assignments, and illustrations related to the established island adventure theme.
This paper explains the process I used to complete the workbook, and also includes research, influences, ideation, sketches, and imagery of the final project.
