Creatures And Clans: The Symbolic Significance Of Animal Imagery In Jacob's Blessings And Beyond, Gregory S. Szarycz
Creatures And Clans: The Symbolic Significance Of Animal Imagery In Jacob's Blessings And Beyond, Gregory S. Szarycz
Between the Species
This article delves into the symbolic significance of animals in the blessings of Jacob, particularly focusing on Genesis 49:1-28. It explores the nuanced portrayal of various animals and their characteristics, shedding light on the author’s keen observation of nature and its integration into the biblical narrative. Drawing on scholarly insights and biblical commentary, the article analyzes the use of animal metaphors to delineate the distinctive traits of each tribe as described in Jacob’s blessings. Through a comparative study of zoological characteristics and biblical symbolism, the article elucidates the deeper meanings embedded within these blessings and their relevance to understanding the …
‘Hot Girl Teaching’ In A Faith-Based Environment, Niya Pickett Miller
‘Hot Girl Teaching’ In A Faith-Based Environment, Niya Pickett Miller
Feminist Pedagogy
There is much to learn from Megan Thee Stallion, the self-proclaimed “Hot Girl Coach.” However, her provocative lyrics and hyper-sexuality are challenging to interject into communication-themed classes at a predominantly white, faith-based university where many students come with an expectation for learning that resists mainstream trends and upholds conventional Christian values and conservative ideological ways of thinking about socio-political issues. This commentary offers a faith-based and feminist perspective about how including Black popular culture, and (more broadly) culturally diverse texts in predominately white, faith-based classrooms can work and why such centering does not contradict biblical principles.

Trudging The Road Of Happy Destiny: The Gift Economy In Early Alcoholics Anonymous History And The Creation Of The Big Book, Timothy J. Parker
Trudging The Road Of Happy Destiny: The Gift Economy In Early Alcoholics Anonymous History And The Creation Of The Big Book, Timothy J. Parker
History
In 1939, Bill Wilson and his peers published Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How Many Thousands of Men and Women Have Recovered from Alcoholism, and in doing so, codified a spiritual gift economy through which millions of people have recovered from alcoholism and other addictions. This project examines the pragmatic formulation of this economy and argues its origins were driven as much by self-interest as altruism. It further explores the syncretic leadership of Bill Wilson and his mark on "The Big Book."

Warrantless Drone Surveillance: Constitutionally Permissible Or Prohibited?, Brett Raffish
Paideia
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), also known as remotely piloted aerial vehicles (RPAVs) or drones, have been a tool for military reconnaissance and surveillance since the early 1900s. They are one of many emerging technologies that have broken onto the consumer market. In addition to their appeal on the private market, drone technology serves a practical purpose for law enforcement agencies looking to adopt new and innovative methods of conducting aerial surveillance. However, the use of drones for surveillance has raised questions pertaining to compliance and consistency with federal search and seizure law as outlined by precedent and the Fourth Amendment. …
Pious And Critical Scholarly Paradigms Of The Pentateuch — During The 19th & Early 20th Centuries, Spencer Morgan
Pious And Critical Scholarly Paradigms Of The Pentateuch — During The 19th & Early 20th Centuries, Spencer Morgan
The Forum: Journal of History
This paper examines the antithesis between Christian scholarship and modern higher criticism of the Pentateuch during the 19th and early 20th centuries. During the 19th century, the popularization and eventual hegemony of the Documentary Hypothesis revolutionized the field of Biblical studies. Modern critical scholars claimed that Moses did not write the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy) during the 15th century BC, but rather it was the product of a later redaction of at least four separate documents: J, E, P, and D. Writing hundreds of years apart and long after Moses, their authors reflect not the ancient covenantal …

Religious History In California: Los Angeles' Pluralistic Past, Amy Hart
Religious History In California: Los Angeles' Pluralistic Past, Amy Hart
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
This project will explore the unique religious diversity of Los Angeles in the 1920s through both the production of a Master's thesis for Cal Poly's History Graduate program, and the contribution of material content to the California Pluralism Project, a NEH-funded program supporting California's Religious Studies curriculum. This project will focus on two case studies as representative examples of Southern California's progressive tolerance in the period of the 1920s: The Pentecostal megachurch of Aimee Semple-McPherson, and the Vedanta Ashram of Swami Paramananda. Both religious institutions opened in Los Angeles in 1923, just thirteen miles away from each other, and continued …
