Management Strategies In The Wildland-Urban Interface Of Southern California And Their Effect On Fire Behavior And Environmental Impacts, Christopher Dicus
Management Strategies In The Wildland-Urban Interface Of Southern California And Their Effect On Fire Behavior And Environmental Impacts, Christopher Dicus
Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences
This paper discusses varying management strategies in wildland-urban interface communities of southern California in terms of their effects on potential fire behavior and residual environmental impacts. A century of fire exclusion policies there and throughout the United States has led to immense fuel loading and declining ecosystem health, which coupled with a burgeoning population relocating to wildland areas, has annually heightened the threat of devastating wildfires. Successful management strategies must consider elements of suppression needs, community education, construction and development standards, and vegetation manipulation, each of which will vary dependant on the ecosystem and socioeconomic conditions of the area considered. …

Governors Highway Safety Associations And Transportation Planning: Exploratory Factor Analysis And Structural Equation Modeling, Sudeshna Mitra, Simon Washington, Eric Dumbaugh, Micael D. Meyer
Governors Highway Safety Associations And Transportation Planning: Exploratory Factor Analysis And Structural Equation Modeling, Sudeshna Mitra, Simon Washington, Eric Dumbaugh, Micael D. Meyer
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991 mandated the consideration of safety in the regional transportation planning process. As part of National Cooperative Highway Research Program Project 8-44, "Incorporating Safety into the Transportation Planning Process," we conducted a telephone survey to assess safety-related activities and expertise at Governors Highway Safety Associations (GHSAs), and GHSA relationships with metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) and state departments of transportation (DOTs). The survey results were combined with statewide crash data to enable exploratory modeling of the relationship between GHSA policies and programs and statewide safety. The modeling objective was to illuminate current hurdles …

The Role Of Moral Philosophy In Promoting Academic Integrity Among Engineering Students, Brian K. Etter, Trevor S. Harding, Cynthia J. Finelli, Donald D. Carpenter
The Role Of Moral Philosophy In Promoting Academic Integrity Among Engineering Students, Brian K. Etter, Trevor S. Harding, Cynthia J. Finelli, Donald D. Carpenter
Materials Engineering
Academic dishonesty is nothing new, yet it is particularly disturbing to find among engineering students, whose professional lives need to be guided by the highest ethical standards. Moral philosophy may illuminate some of the conditions for recovering a sense of the ethical for engineering students. Classical moral philosophers held that people belong to communities in ways that inform their sense of obligation. Recognition of these communities would make concrete the engineer's responsibility for the health, safety and welfare of the public. A further difficulty is that the primary community that students know is simply that of their peers in school …
Inspection And Deterioration Of Bridge Decks Constructed Using Stay-In-Place Metal Forms And Epoxy-Coated Reinforcement, Nabil Grace, James L. Hanson, Hany I. Abdelmessih
Inspection And Deterioration Of Bridge Decks Constructed Using Stay-In-Place Metal Forms And Epoxy-Coated Reinforcement, Nabil Grace, James L. Hanson, Hany I. Abdelmessih
Civil and Environmental Engineering
A comprehensive research investigation was conducted to evaluate the use of Stay-in-Place Metal Forms (SIPMFs) in construction of concrete bridge decks. The objectives of this research project were to establish the state-of-the-practice for use and performance of SIPMFs for bridge decks, to evaluate the field performance of bridge decks with and without SIPMFs, and to investigate the behavior of environmentally conditioned large-scale laboratory bridge deck specimens with and without SIPMFs. A survey was developed and administered to all DOTs to examine the state-of-the-practice of using SIPMFs for concrete bridge deck construction. Additionally, a field investigation was conducted to evaluate the …

Shandon Plan, Fall 2003/ Winter 2004, Crp 410/ 411 Community Planning Lab
City and Regional Planning Studios and Projects
Shandon is a small community located about twenty miles east of Paso Robles in northern San Luis Obispo County. The town is adjacent to state Highway 46, and its main street, Centre Street, is also a state route—Highway 41—which runs through the center of town. The town’s population is growing, and currently totals about one thousand residents. The town’s population comprises two main groups; there are roughly equal numbers of Latino and white residents living in Shandon.
Shandon has very few services to offer its residents. The population is currently too small to support many businesses such as shops, restaurants, …
