Mechanical Engineering
The purpose of this senior project was to investigate the possibility of making bikes (as a regular mode of transportation) look much more appealing to the general public. To that end, an electric motor assist system was added to make it easier for the operators of the vehicle. A fairing was added to protect the rider from wind and rain, and an electrical subsystem consisting of a microcontroller and many other components was also added. The electrical subsystem was meant to store the information of different riders, calculate calories burned using a heart beat sensor, and increase visibility using strategically-placed …
San Luis Obispo Police Department Scheduling, Joshua R. Logier
San Luis Obispo Police Department Scheduling, Joshua R. Logier
Computer Engineering
The San Luis Obispo Police Department (SLOPD) desired a new scheduling software that would enable their employees to view their work schedules online while maintaining the look and feel and ease of use of their current scheduling system. This project describes the design of such a new scheduling system that maintains the look and feel of the old scheduling system while providing a means to edit and view schedules online.

Locating Optimal Water Quality Monitoring Locations Using Demand Coverage Index Method, Jeffrey Scott Brake
Locating Optimal Water Quality Monitoring Locations Using Demand Coverage Index Method, Jeffrey Scott Brake
Master's Theses
Water quality regulations are always expanding especially in the field of water quality monitoring; however, threats to our water distribution systems still remain. Components of water distribution systems are susceptible to intentional and accidental contamination; therefore, they represent highly vulnerable aspects of our vital infrastructure.
An analysis was performed on a city in California with a population of 30,000 to 40,000 residents. The analysis is performed to determine the optimal locations of monitoring stations throughout the water distribution system. The method presented by Liu and colleagues (Liu et al, 2012) selects the optimal monitoring locations for the virtual California city …
An Iris Authentication System Based On Artificial Neural Networks, Brenden Velu
An Iris Authentication System Based On Artificial Neural Networks, Brenden Velu
Electrical Engineering
An iris authentication system verifies the authenticity of a person based on their iris features. The iris features are extracted through wavelet transform of the isolated iris from modified iris images. A level 5 wavelet decomposition is performed on the images, and the resulting low-frequency wavelet coefficients represent the inputs to the artificial neural network. The artificial neural network reads these features as inputs, and classifies each set of inputs according to their target identity. This authentication system currently classifies up to 10 people. The irises used for classification represent ideal situations with minimum eyelash and eyelid interference.

Alive! A Dynamic Process Of Renewal At Pier 70., Kalyn Crosier
Landscape Architecture
Alive is a project proposal for the most northern portion of Pier 70 in San Francisco at the historical slip number four. The project strives to reinvigorate a toxic brownfield with remediation systems, transforming the location into a productive landscape beneficial to surrounding neighborhoods. The project strives to revitalize adjacent communities as well as natural ecosystems.

Large Dynamic Range Amplifier Plus Adc, Ted Hsueh
Electrical Engineering
Nerve and muscle signal sampling proves difficult because of the large difference in magnitudes. Muscle signals loom a hundred or even a thousand times bigger and can hide the nerve signals. The Large Dynamic Range Amplifier plus Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) allows one device to retrieve both muscle and nerve signal information. The device has two parts: the ability to take high-resolution data from tenths of microvolts to several millivolts and filter out environmental noise, such as 60 Hz of electrical power lines or electro galvanic signals. This gives the ability to read muscle and nerve signals using one …

City Of San Luis Obispo Open Space Vegetation Management Plan, Danielle Rose Althaus
City Of San Luis Obispo Open Space Vegetation Management Plan, Danielle Rose Althaus
Master's Theses
This Master’s Professional Project is focused on the development of a draft Vegetation Management Plan for the City of San Luis Obispo Open Space properties. The purpose of the plan is to provide a comprehensive document which identifies how the city is addressing wildfire preparedness in city-owned open space properties. Methods used in plan development include a literature review, content analysis, geographic information systems (GIS), a course audit, and consultation with city staff and other stakeholders. Each open space property is identified in the plan, describing its location, vegetation, topography, assets, access points, water supply, evacuation routes, historical fire data, …

Cayucos Community Health Plan, Jennifer Joyce Franich
Master's Theses
Recent, mounting research shows that chronic disease, the leading causes of death and primary driver of health care costs, cannot be effectively addressed through education or preventative health alone. A physical environment that promotes health—through access to healthy food, opportunities for physical activity, quality housing, transportation options, and safe schools—is an integral part of making our communities healthier. This research and accompanying Healthy Community Plans will serve as a way for the County to begin looking in-depth at the ways the built environment (our streets, parks, and neighborhoods) contribute or detract from the health of the community. Though the creation …

Public Art: Context & Process In San Luis Obispo, Ca, Kristin Ann Kiefer
Master's Theses
Public spaces are noted by historians, philosophers, planners, etc as being the lifeblood of civic centers, spaces that bring people in community together for a myriad of reasons. Recalling the ancient Agricola’s of ancient Greece to the modern version of malls and pedestrian plazas, these spaces are where social interactions occur, ideas are spread, and are open for all people to enjoy. Beautifying these spaces with public art and well-thought out design encourage the use of these spaces and work to empower those who use them. While the mode in which public art populates public spaces has changed, the notion …

Alternate Computer Input Device For Individuals With Quadriplegia, Tobais Elder, Michelle Martinez, David Sylvester
Biomedical Engineering
This project details the design development of an alternative computer input system that allows a person with quadriplegia to move a computer's cursor and activate left and right click button inputs. After researching and analyzing possible solutions, an end design was chosen that most appropriately satisfied all user requirements and engineering specifications. This final design employs a head mounted Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with 9 DoF (Degrees of Freedom) to track head movements and correlate these motions to computer cursor movements. A Sip-Puff Transducer monitors and interprets a user's application of negative and positive air pressure differentials to a vinyl …

San Juan Bautista General Plan Update: Background Report, Fall 2014, Crp 552/ 554 Community And Regional Planning Studio
City and Regional Planning Studios and Projects
This Background Report is an integral part of the San Juan Bautista 2035 General Plan. Its purpose is to provide the public, the City’s decision-makers, and other agencies with detailed information about San Juan Bautista using current conditions and community input. In this way, the Background Report provides the informational basis on which the goals, policies, and programs of the San Juan Bautista General Plan are in part based. While the General Plan itself represents the official adopted goals and policies of the City, this Background Report provides only information, including the plans and programs of other agencies.
