Effect Of Grape-Leaf Potassium Content On Life-History Traits Of Willamette Spider Mite, Eotetranychus Willamettei (Mcgregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae), Michael Paul Sotelo
Effect Of Grape-Leaf Potassium Content On Life-History Traits Of Willamette Spider Mite, Eotetranychus Willamettei (Mcgregor) (Acari: Tetranychidae), Michael Paul Sotelo
Horticulture and Crop Science
Vitis vinifera L. cv. Chardonnay vines were fertilized to approximate baseline, low, medium, and high grape-leaf potassium contents, relative to viticultural target values. From those vines, twelve replicates of leaf-discs were made per fertilizer treatment. The leaf-discs were populated with individuals of Willamette spider mite, Eotetranychus willamettei (McGregor) and maintained in a plant growth chamber (25°C, 14L:10D h). Data pertaining to maturation time (days), pre-oviposition period (days), lifetime fecundity (eggs / ♀), and longevity (days) of E. willamettei was recorded daily. Petiole analysis revealed that the grape-leaf potassium contents were greater than target values. Respective to fertilizer treatment, the actual …

Traversing Swanton Road, 15th Ed., James A. West
Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources
Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

A Strategy For Integrating Essential Three-Dimensional Microphysiological Systems Of Human Organs For Realistic Anticancer Drug Screening, Christopher Heylman, Agua Sobrino, Venktesh S. Shirure, Christopher Cw Hughes, Steven C. George
Biomedical Engineering
Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality around the world. Despite some success, traditional anticancer drugs developed to reduce tumor growth face important limitations primarily due to undesirable bone marrow and cardiovascular toxicity. Many drugs fail in clinical development after showing promise in preclinical trials, suggesting that the available in vitro and animal models are poor predictors of drug efficacy and toxicity in humans. Thus, novel models that more accurately mimic the biology of human organs are necessary for high-throughput drug screening. Three-dimensional (3D) microphysiological systems can utilize induced pluripotent stem cell technology, tissue engineering, and …

Effects Of Covering System, Sealing Time, And Packing On Fermentation, Nutritional Quality, And Organic Matter Loss Of Corn Silage In A Drive-Over Pile, Katie Rose Nutcher
Effects Of Covering System, Sealing Time, And Packing On Fermentation, Nutritional Quality, And Organic Matter Loss Of Corn Silage In A Drive-Over Pile, Katie Rose Nutcher
Dairy Science
This project involved an experiment conducted using a 550-ton capacity drive-over pile of whole-plant corn silage. The main effects compared were: packing the final forage surface with a loader or crawler, delay or immediate sealing, and covering with standard plastic or an oxygen barrier film.
Numerous studies have shown that the absence of oxygen in silage stored in a bunker silo or pile is crucial for proper fermentation and to ensure the highest quality silage at feed out. When oxygen is allowed to permeate through the covering material, it leads to visible spoilage. This trial showed that the oxygen barrier …
Quality Control Program In Cal Poly Creamery To Improve Records And Products, Natalie Baldwin
Quality Control Program In Cal Poly Creamery To Improve Records And Products, Natalie Baldwin
Dairy Science
The purpose of this project was to improve the Quality Control Systems applied at the Cal Poly Creamery by means of implementing a new computer program that will allow more precise record keeping that will in turn produce enhanced results. Each quality control test that is performed at the Creamery and Dairy Products Technology Center was shadowed and thoroughly explained in order to fully understand and grasp all concepts of the tests. Some of the tests were then done solo to fully understand the idea, and data was collected. The data collected over the last two years was inputted into …
The Effect Of Days In The Close Up Pen On 60 Day Cull Rates And Milk Production In The Subsequent Lactation, Hudson Hanlon
The Effect Of Days In The Close Up Pen On 60 Day Cull Rates And Milk Production In The Subsequent Lactation, Hudson Hanlon
Dairy Science
The transition period is one of the most important times in a cows life. Cows during this period are susceptible to many kinds of health problems that are related to the time of calving. These metabolic disorders can have a large impact on the beginning milk yields of dairy cows. This study was done to see if the amount of days in the close up pen has a large effect on milk yield after calving. Five Holstein dairy herds in the California Central Valley were used for this study. Residence time in close up pen was recorded for all cows. …

Best Management Practices For Raising Dairy Calves From Birth To Weaning, Alexa Cabral
Best Management Practices For Raising Dairy Calves From Birth To Weaning, Alexa Cabral
Dairy Science
There are many different ways to raise calves on dairy farms in the United States. The way calves are raised can depend on the resources, natural environment and operation of the farm. There is no right or wrong way to raise calves. However, the aim of raising calves is to find the best way to raise a healthy calf so that she will become a productive cow. The objective of this literature review was to determine the ideal management practices for raising a healthy calf from birth to weaning. This literature analyzed numerous articles that covered all aspects of calf …
Preparing Samples Of Rancid Milk For Milk Judging Contests, Danielle Li
Preparing Samples Of Rancid Milk For Milk Judging Contests, Danielle Li
Dairy Science
Due to the growing concern of raw milk, there is a growing need for other methods of preparing rancid milk for milk judging. The origin of rancidity in milk is due to lipolysis caused the lipase enzyme. However, with pasteurization, the lipase enzyme is inactivated. The purpose of this experiment was to compare the effect of using lipase powder to other current methods of preparing rancid milk, such as utilizing raw milk. Result showed that all treatments caused desired rancidity. The second purpose was to compare the rancidity between Method A, two to three hour incubation at room temperature, and …
