Some Uses And Potentials Of Qualitative Methods In Planning, Hemalata C. Dandekar
Some Uses And Potentials Of Qualitative Methods In Planning, Hemalata C. Dandekar
City and Regional Planning
Planners use methods borrowed from many disciplines. These are usually modified and adapted to meet planner's needs to acquire and sift through many diverse information sources helpful in dealing with complex problems. The quantitative methods which planners use are well known, well established in practice, and acknowledged by most as tools of the planners' trade. In contrast to this, most planners also use qualitative methods but these are rarely explicitly acknowledged. In this paper some of the qualitative methods used in planning are identified and categorized into three groups according to the special contribution that they make to the practice …

Nonfat Dairy Coffee Whitener Made From Ultrafiltered Skimmilk Retentates, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Frank V. Kosikowski
Nonfat Dairy Coffee Whitener Made From Ultrafiltered Skimmilk Retentates, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Frank V. Kosikowski
Dairy Science
Retentates of different protein concentrations obtained by ultrafiltration of skimmilk were freeze-dried and evaluated as nonfat dairy coffee whiteners. Blended in hot coffee the retentate whiteners containing added riboflavin gave a pH of 6.3-6.55, coffee whitening capacity comparable to a commercial nondairy coffee creamer, and acceptable dispersibility. The retentate nondairy whitener with optimum qualities contained 56% total protein, 0.5% fat, 31.0% carbohydrates, 1.92% calcium, and 27 mg sodium/100g.
Relative Toxicities Of Inorganic Aluminum Complexes To Barley, R. S. Cameron, G. S.P. Ritchie, A. D. Robson
Relative Toxicities Of Inorganic Aluminum Complexes To Barley, R. S. Cameron, G. S.P. Ritchie, A. D. Robson
Food Science and Nutrition
The inorganic forms of Al in the soil solution that decrease plant growth in acid soils have not been clearly identified. Therefore, we examined the effects of Al and its complexes with F- and SO42- on the root elongation of barley (Hordeum vulgare) in nutrient solutions containing 3333 μmol Ca L-1 and 6 μmol B L-1 at pH 4.5. The anions were chosen because of their presence in the soil solution at levels sufficient to complex Al. The toxicity of 0 to 100 μmol Al L-1 was studied in the presence of …
Seasonal Differences In Function Of The Hypothalamic-Hypophysial-Ovarian Axis In Weaned Primiparous Sows, Jeffrey D. Armstrong, J. H. Britt, N. M. Cox
Seasonal Differences In Function Of The Hypothalamic-Hypophysial-Ovarian Axis In Weaned Primiparous Sows, Jeffrey D. Armstrong, J. H. Britt, N. M. Cox
Office of the President Scholarship
Primiparous sows were fed to appetite during lactations that occurred during winter or summer, and 11.4 ± 0.4 pigs per litter were weaned at 23.5 ± 0.1 days of age. Sows were slaughtered at 0 or 72 h after weaning or blood samples were collected until 24 h after onset of oestrus. Sows that lactated during summer consumed less food and lost more (P < 0.05) weight, heartgirth and backfat than those that lactated during winter. Weaning-to-oestrus interval was greater (P < 0.05) in summer (224 ± 25 h) than in winter (93 ± 13 h). Content of GnRH in the hypothalamus and concentrations of LH in the anterior pituitary and serum were lower (P < 0.05)after weaning in summer than winter. The numbers of visible ovarian follicles < 5 mm in diameter at weaning were lower (P < 0.05) in summer than in winter. In contrast to LH, FSH concentration in serum was higher (P < 0.10) in summer than winter, but FSH values in the anterior pituitary were lower (P < 0.05) in summer than in winter. Post-weaning patterns of secretion of oestradiol and follicular development differed between winter and summer. For example, in some sows weaned during the summer, transient surges of oestradiol occurred repeatedly during 0 to 280 h after weaning without provoking surges of LH. These results indicate that the period of post-weaning anoestrus in summer is prolonged because of altered activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, possibly because of changes in sensitivity to the feedback of oestradiol. Lower feed intake during lactations that occur during summer may predispose the endocrine system to the aberrations.
