Sim-Plete Feeding Trial, Kelsey Johnson Dec 2009

Sim-Plete Feeding Trial, Kelsey Johnson

Animal Science

A. An internship with ENI will offer an opportunity to work in the field with horse owners, feeds, marketing, and nutrition. I will be assisting in the placement of a product in the field and evaluating response. It is the first step in evaluating if this product is an appropriate and marketable product.

B. The responsibilities will be to place a new equine feed product with 10-15 horse owners (approximately 30-45 horses) and measure customer response and potential marketability of the product. Including:

  1. Delivery of the product
  2. Creation of Questionnaires (one will be given before the owners begin feeding the …

School Breakfast Program: Efficacy And Impact, Amber Ward Dec 2009

School Breakfast Program: Efficacy And Impact, Amber Ward

Food Science and Nutrition

The primary goals of the school breakfast program are to reduce food-insecurity among low-income students and to decrease the growing habit of breakfast skipping. Consumption of school breakfast has been associated with improved health and academic performance. The purpose of this review was to investigate these alleged beneficial outcomes and to evaluate the program’s success in promoting accessibility and participation for all students. Results showed that children who ate a school breakfast were more likely to have a healthier BMI and a broader daily nutrient intake. Participation also helped students achieve higher math and reading grades. Their teachers reported improvements …

Simpler Packaging, Tomiko Oden

Graphic Communication

This project explains how product packaging is become more "green", and thus more simple. Packaging needs to go beyond just simplifying materials and graphics - it needs to create a simpler process in order to reduce wasted time, energy, and resources.

Dissolved Organic Matter Influences The Timing Of Embryonic Development Of The Purple Sea Urchin, Strongylocentrotus Purpuratus., Corbin J. Hodges Dec 2009

Dissolved Organic Matter Influences The Timing Of Embryonic Development Of The Purple Sea Urchin, Strongylocentrotus Purpuratus., Corbin J. Hodges

Master's Theses

Marine dissolved organic matter (DOM) comprises one of the largest carbon reservoirs on earth and has long been considered a potential energy source for marine invertebrates. The importance of DOM transport has been adequately demonstrated for unicellular organisms, where DOM can meet 100% of an organisms energy needs, but the effects of DOM uptake for marine metazoans are less well understood. In this study, three general areas involving the influence of DOM transport to marine invertebrates were explored. First, we assessed the effects of using seawater exposed to high intensity ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the study organism; embryos of the …

Increasing Productivity In Irrigated Agriculture: Agronomic Constraints And Hydrological Realities, Chris Perry, Pasquale Steduto, Richard C. Allen, Charles M. Burt Nov 2009

Increasing Productivity In Irrigated Agriculture: Agronomic Constraints And Hydrological Realities, Chris Perry, Pasquale Steduto, Richard C. Allen, Charles M. Burt

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Irrigation is widely criticised as a profligate and wasteful user of water, especially in watershort areas. Improvements to irrigation management are proposed as a way of increasing agricultural production and reducing the demand for water. The terminology for this debate is often flawed, failing to clarify the actual disposition of water used in irrigation into evaporation, transpiration, and return flows that may, depending on local conditions, be recoverable. Once the various flows are properly identified, the existing literature suggests that the scope for saving consumptive use of water through advanced irrigation technologies is often limited. Further, the interactions between evaporation …

Microalgal Biomass For Greenhouse Gas Reductions: Potential For Replacement Of Fossil Fuels And Animal Feeds, D. E. Brune, Tryg Lundquist, J. R. Benemann Nov 2009

Microalgal Biomass For Greenhouse Gas Reductions: Potential For Replacement Of Fossil Fuels And Animal Feeds, D. E. Brune, Tryg Lundquist, J. R. Benemann

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Microalgal biomass production offers a number of advantages over conventional biomass production, including higher productivities, use of otherwise nonproductive land, reuse and recovery of waste nutrients, use of saline or brackish waters, and reuse of CO2 from power-plant flue gas or similar sources. Microalgal biomass production and utilization offers potential for greenhouse gas (GHG) avoidance by providing biofuel replacement of fossil fuels and carbon-neutral animal feeds. This paper presents an initial analysis of the potential for GHG avoidance using a proposed algal biomass production system coupled to recovery of flue-gas CO2 combined with waste sludge and/or animal manure …

Experiences With Statistical Consulting, Patrick Ciavonne Ziegler

Statistics

For my senior project, I met with the consultant for the statistics department and sat in on sessions with clients. Throughout two quarters, I worked on asking better questions and becoming more comfortable with my knowledge of statistics. The write-up of this project includes descriptions of projects I participated on, what I learned from them and what was done. It also includes thoughts I had relating to the senior project experience as a whole.

What Distinguishes Weight-Loss Maintainers From The Treatment-Seeking Obese? Analysis Of Environmental, Behavioral, And Psychosocial Variables In Diverse Populations, Suzanne Phelan, Tao Liu, Amy Gorin, Michael Lowe, Joseph Hogan, Joseph Fava, Rena R. Wing Oct 2009

What Distinguishes Weight-Loss Maintainers From The Treatment-Seeking Obese? Analysis Of Environmental, Behavioral, And Psychosocial Variables In Diverse Populations, Suzanne Phelan, Tao Liu, Amy Gorin, Michael Lowe, Joseph Hogan, Joseph Fava, Rena R. Wing

Kinesiology and Public Health

Background Understanding the factors that influence successful weight control is critical for developing interventions.
Purpose The purpose of the study was to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of psychosocial, environmental, and behavioral variables in distinguishing weight-loss maintainers (WLM) from treatment-seeking obese (TSO).
Methods WLM (n=167) had lost ≥10% of their maximum body weight, had kept the weight off for ≥5 years, and were now of normal weight. TSO-1 and TSO-2 had a history of dieting and body mass index ≥25. TSO-1 was predominantly Caucasian; TSO-2 was predominantly African-American. Bayesian model averaging was used to identify the …
