The Use Of A High Level Cfd Code In Engineering Education, J.E.S. Venart, P. Lemieux, A.C.M. Sousa, D. Tatchell
Mechanical Engineering
An advanced multipurpose Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) code, FloSYS, developed for use in a CAD/CAE environment has been utilized in undergraduate and graduate courses in heat transfer. Problems are introduced at an introductory level in: -steady 2- and 3-dimensional conduction, -transient 1-, 2-, and 3-dimensional conduction, -free convective cavity flow with conjugate heat transfer, and -turbulent flows with heat transfer. More sophisticated problems, related to the use of porous media concepts for modelling heat exchangers, and compartment fire modelling are introduced at a more senior level. After one year's experimental use, the CFD code is being recommended for use in …

Visual Interaction In Diagnostic Radiology, Erika Rogers, Ronald C. Arkin, M. Baron
Visual Interaction In Diagnostic Radiology, Erika Rogers, Ronald C. Arkin, M. Baron
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The concept of Visual Interaction is introduced as the process which links perception and problem-solving such that problem-solving is affected by what is seen, and conversely, what is seen and perceived is affected by the current state of the problem-solving process. This paper describes the development of a cognitively-based model of the visual interaction process in diagnostic radiology, and shows how aspects of this model are being incorporated into the design and implementation of an intelligent computer-based radiological assistant. In order to achieve this, it is necessary to extract information about the nature and type of knowledge involved in this …

Social Psychology And The Stimulation Of Recycling Behaviors: The Block Leader Approach, Shawn M. Burn
Social Psychology And The Stimulation Of Recycling Behaviors: The Block Leader Approach, Shawn M. Burn
Psychology and Child Development
Recycling has been touted as an important part of the solution to solid waste problems, yet most citizens still do not recycle, even when recycling is made easy by curbside pickups. This field experiment was designed to increase participation in a city-sponsored curbside recycling program. Citizens who consistently recycled with the city program were approached and asked to be "recycling block leaders." Those who agreed were instructed to give approximately 10 nonrecycling neighbors a persuasive communication advocating recycling and special recycling bags. A second treatment group (of nonrecycling households) had bags and the communication left at their door. Results indicated …

A Pilot Test Of Discrimination In The Japanese Distribution System, Norm A. Borin, Cynthia Van Vranken, Paul W. Farris
Marketing
Japanese trade practices continue to receive a great deal of discussion in both academic and trade circles. Foreign manufacturers of consumer goods believe that Japanese channel members do not provide foreign goods with the same level of support that domestic goods receive. Unfortunately, this has been difficult to validate since the level of analysis usually neglects merchandising support at the store level-where the success or failure of a product is often determined. A pilot study was conducted to develop a methodology that compared the relative levels of distribution and merchandising support for foreign and domestic brands. An intensive analysis of …
