Hazardous Waste Management, Harold M. Cota, David Wallenstein
Hazardous Waste Management, Harold M. Cota, David Wallenstein
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Hazardous waste management is a broad and evolving field. Applicable state and federal regulations comprising over 60,000 pages are continually being updated. Many of these regulations overlap and are subject to differences in interpretation that often lead to court rulings. Regulations, economic pressures and public perception are forcing companies to rapidly change the way they manufacture products in order to minimize hazardous waste generation. Over 200 million tons of solid hazardous waste are generated annually in the United States. Huge quantities of hazardous waste deposited in landfills, ponds, fields, and other locations require removal or in situ treatment. Common hazardous …

Buried Drip Irrigation On Pistachios Study - Munger-Poonian Land And Farming Co., Charles M. Burt, Stuart W. Styles
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
A multi-year study and technical support were conducted on commercial fields of pistachios, apples, table grapes, wine grapes, and blueberries in central California. The learning curve required by growers, and energy and irrigation efficiencies was documented. (Note: Appendices 1-6 are not included in this document.)

Public Service Anouncements And The Fight Against Aids: A Survey Of Radio Broadcasters' Attitudes And Policies, Douglas J. Swanson
Public Service Anouncements And The Fight Against Aids: A Survey Of Radio Broadcasters' Attitudes And Policies, Douglas J. Swanson
Journalism
A pilot study surveyed radio broadcasters in Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Texas to further an understanding of their role as gatekeepers for public service announcements (PSA) to educate audiences about AIDS and bring about "safe" behavior. A total of 300 stations were in the sample. Respondents were asked to provide information about their stations and their stations' use of HIV/AIDS PSAs. Most broadcasters reported using HIV/AIDS PSAs (76.1%). About one-third of broadcasters who reported not using the PSAs claimed they had never been offered any such announcements to broadcast. Most respondents agreed that HIV/AIDS is a significant national and local …

Computer Science and Software Engineering
This paper describes a project funded by the Technology Reinvestment Project (TRP) under the manufacturing education component (MET) to design, build, and evaluate interactive multimedia courseware for manufacturing education. Interactive multimedia is defined as the combination of computer based text, sound, graphics, animation, video, and simulation, commercial and defense industries along with a professional society are collaborating on the project in an effort to address important dual-use issues. Advanced media technologies are being exploited to create virtual, time shifted, and/or remote visits to real world manufacturing systems. The foundations for our efforts and the experiences in the first year of …

Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Strain Ma01 Aerobically Metabolizes The Aminodinitrotoluenes Produced By 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluene Nitro Group Reduction, Mark A. Alvarez, Christopher Kitts, James L. Botsford, Pat J. Unkefer
Biological Sciences
Many microbes reduce the nitro substituents of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), producing aminodinitrotoluenes (ADNTs). These compounds are recalcitrant to further breakdown and are acutely toxic. In a search for organisms capable of metabolizing ADNTs, a bacterial strain was isolated for the ability to use 2-aminobenzoate (anthranilate) as sole C-source. This isolate, Pseudomonas aeruginosa MAO1, metabolized TNT by first reducing one nitro group to form either 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene (2ADNT) or 4 -amino-2,6-dinitrotoluene(4ADNT). However, strain MA01 was distinct from other TNT-reducing organisms in that it transformed these compounds into highly polar metabolites through an 02-dependent process. Strain MAOl was able to cometabolize TNT, 2ADNT, and …
