Long-Term Memory Motion-Compensated Prediction, Thomas Wiegand, Xiaozheng Zhang, Bernd Girod
Long-Term Memory Motion-Compensated Prediction, Thomas Wiegand, Xiaozheng Zhang, Bernd Girod
Electrical Engineering
Long-term memory motion-compensated prediction extends the spatial displacement vector utilized in block-based hybrid video coding by a variable time delay permitting the use of more frames than the previously decoded one for motion compensated prediction. The long-term memory covers several seconds of decoded frames at the encoder and decoder. The use of multiple frames for motion compensation in most cases provides significantly improved prediction gain. The variable time delay has to be transmitted as side information requiring an additional bit rate which may be prohibitive when the size of the long-term memory becomes too large. Therefore, we control the bit …

Evaluation Of Subsurface Drip Irrigation On Peppers, Stuart W. Styles, Charles M. Burt
Evaluation Of Subsurface Drip Irrigation On Peppers, Stuart W. Styles, Charles M. Burt
BioResource and Agricultural Engineering
This paper is a summary of two farms that utilized the California Energy Commission's low-interest loan program to facilitate their entry into drip irrigation. One farm is located near Oxnard, California, USA and the other is located near Gilroy, California, USA. Both of these growers farm about 162 hectares (400 acres) in their overall operations and used the loans to purchase subsurface drip irrigation systems for Peppers. Over $4 million in low-interest loans have been made available to California growers from the California Energy Commission (CEC) since 1986. The CEC initiated the loan program for growers to help implement energy …
Nitrogen Utilization Efficiency Of Creeping Bentgrass Genotypes, Y. Kuo, David J. Wehner, T. W. Fermanian, John M. Swiader
Nitrogen Utilization Efficiency Of Creeping Bentgrass Genotypes, Y. Kuo, David J. Wehner, T. W. Fermanian, John M. Swiader
Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship
A greenhouse study was conducted in a hydroponic system to determine the nitrogen (N) utilization efficiency (NUE) of 14 creeping bentgrass cultivars. There were significant differences among cultivars in plant tissue dry weight, tissue N content, root absorption efficiency (RAE), and NUE. Considering all plant tissue (whole plant), 'Penncross' accumulated the highest N accompanied with the highest whole plant dry weight (WPDW), while 'Allure' accumulated the lowest total Nand WPDW than all the other cultivars. The proportion of WPDW and total N partitioned to shoots was higher than partitioned to roots in each cultivar. On a whole plant basis, 'Regent' …
Nitrogen Utilization In Creeping Bentgrass, Y. Kuo, T. W. Fermanian, David J. Wehner
Nitrogen Utilization In Creeping Bentgrass, Y. Kuo, T. W. Fermanian, David J. Wehner
Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship
N utilization, including plant dry weight (DW) production, total N and nitrate N (NO3-N) content accumulation, N utilization efficiency (NUE), root absorption efficiency (RAE), reduced N accumulation, and nitrate assimilation capacity (NAC) were determined for creeping bentgrass cultivars grown in hydroponic culture. Possible mechanisms affecting N utilization including nitrate reductase activity (NRA) and root morphology were also examined. Four cultivars, selected from an initial screening of creeping bentgrasses were grown under both low and high levels of N in a flowing solution culture system. The relationship between NUE and plant growth for two different creeping bentgrass cultivars was …
Production Of Biogenic Mn Oxides By Leptothrix Discophora Ss-1 In A Chemically Defined Growth Medium And Evaluation Of Their Pb Adsorption Characteristics, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, William C. Ghiorse, Michael L. Shuler
Production Of Biogenic Mn Oxides By Leptothrix Discophora Ss-1 In A Chemically Defined Growth Medium And Evaluation Of Their Pb Adsorption Characteristics, Yarrow M. Nelson, Leonard W. Lion, William C. Ghiorse, Michael L. Shuler
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Biogenic Mn oxides were produced by the bacterium Leptothrix discophora SS-1 (= ATCC 3182) in a chemically defined mineral salts medium, and the Pb binding and specific surface area of these oxides were characterized. Growth of SS-1 in the defined medium with pyruvate as a carbon and energy source required the addition of vitamin B12. Complete oxidation of Mn(II) within 60 h required the addition of ≥0.1 μM FeSO4. Pb adsorption isotherms were determined for the biogenic Mn oxides (and associated cells with their extracellular polymer) and compared to the Pb adsorption isotherms of cells and …

Review Of A Critical Link: Interventions For Physical Growth And Psychological Development, Gretel Pelto, Katherine Dickin, Patrice L. Engle
Psychology and Child Development
An extensive scientific review showing that psychological interventions to support psychological development and nutrition interventions to support physical growth are effective and that combined interventions to improve both growth and psychological development have synergistic effects.
Interaction Of Blood Pressure And Ldl Cholesterol In Early Atherosclerosis. The Los Angeles Atherosclerosis Study, Ping Sun, Kathleen M. Dwyer, Noel Bairey Merz, Wei Sun, Lisa M. Nicholson, Cheryl Nordstrom, James H. Dwyer
Interaction Of Blood Pressure And Ldl Cholesterol In Early Atherosclerosis. The Los Angeles Atherosclerosis Study, Ping Sun, Kathleen M. Dwyer, Noel Bairey Merz, Wei Sun, Lisa M. Nicholson, Cheryl Nordstrom, James H. Dwyer
Food Science and Nutrition
Background. The response to injury model of atherosclerosis has been investigated in animal models but not in epidemiologic studies. Relations between LDL cholesterol and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) within levels of SBP provide a test of this model. Methods. Data are from a longitudinal study of 573 randomly sampled asymptomatic employees of a large company aged 40-60 years. IMT and change in IMT over 18 months (8IMT) were determined sonographically in the common carotid artery. 497 subjects were available for cross-sectional analysis. To investigate interactive effects of SBP and serum LDL on IMT, linear slopes (j±SE in mm/mmol/L) of IMT …

Magnetic Microstructure Of Magnetotactic Bacteria By Electron Holography, Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski, Martha R. Mccartney, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Mihály Pósfai, Peter R. Buseck
Magnetic Microstructure Of Magnetotactic Bacteria By Electron Holography, Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski, Martha R. Mccartney, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Mihály Pósfai, Peter R. Buseck
Physics
Off-axis electron holography in the transmission electron microscope was used to correlate the physical and magnetic microstructure of magnetite nanocrystals in magnetotactic bacteria. The magnetite crystals were all single magnetic domains, and the magnetization directions of small superparamagnetic crystals were constrained by magnetic interactions with larger crystals in the chains. Shape anisotropy was found to dominate magnetocrystalline anisotropy in elongated crystals. A coercive field between 300 and 450 oersted was determined for one chain.
