Rov-Based Tracking Of A Shallow Water Nocturnal Squid, Samuel Yim, Christopher M. Clark, Timothy Peters, Vladimir Prodanov, Pat Fidopiastis

Biological Sciences

This paper describes the use of a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) equipped with a monocular vision system to find and track the squid Euprymna scolopes, so that motion behaviors of the squid could be characterized through the use of off-line image processing and state estimation. The ROV was deployed for several nights at several nearshore locations off Oahu, resulting in 10 hours of squid footage. Using blob-tracking image processing techniques and a Particle Filter state estimator, the squid can be detected and tracked. The position, velocity, and acceleration of the squid relative to the stationary ROV can be determined. Experiment …

High Performance Regional Ocean Modeling With Gpu Acceleration, Ian Panzer, Spencer Lines, Jason Mak, Paul Choboter, Chris Lupo Sep 2013

High Performance Regional Ocean Modeling With Gpu Acceleration, Ian Panzer, Spencer Lines, Jason Mak, Paul Choboter, Chris Lupo

Computer Science and Software Engineering

The Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) is an open-source, free-surface, primitive equation ocean model used by the scientific community for a diverse range of applications [1]. ROMS employs sophisticated numerical techniques, including a split-explicit time-stepping scheme that treats the fast barotropic (2D) and slow baroclinic (3D) modes separately for improved efficiency [2]. ROMS also contains a suite of data assimilation tools that allow the user to improve the accuracy of a simulation by incorporating observational data. These tools are based on four dimensional variational methods [3], which generate reliable results, but require more computational resources than without any assimilation of …

Mechanoadaptation Of Feed Artery Smooth Muscle Cells In The Stem Of The Collateral Circulation, Allison Peck Sep 2013

Mechanoadaptation Of Feed Artery Smooth Muscle Cells In The Stem Of The Collateral Circulation, Allison Peck

Biomedical Engineering

Many patients suffering from peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) experience intermittent claudication, pain during locomotion. Previous studies suggest that this symptom could be explained in part by impaired vasodilation in collateral arteries. In this study, femoral ligation was performed on a murine animal model, stimulating collateral outward remodeling. The mechanism by which a collateral increases its luminal diameter in response to the increase in blood flow following occlusion warrents further investigation due to impaired vasodilation following collateral remodeling. Specifically, resting diameter is elevated in the stem region of the collateral circuit, but this increase in vessel size cannot be explained …

Current strategies for diverting threatening asteroids require dedicated operations for every individual object. We propose a stand-off, Earth-orbiting system capable of vaporizing the surface of asteroids as a futuristic but feasible approach to impact risk mitigation. We call the system DE-STAR (Directed Energy System for Targeting of Asteroids and exploRation). DE-STAR is a modular phased array of laser amplifiers, powered by solar photovoltaic panels. Lowcost development of test systems is possible with existing technology. Larger arrays could be tested in sub-orbital demonstrations, leading eventually to an orbiting system. Design requirements are established by seeking to vaporize the surface of an …

Towards Three-Dimensional Underwater Mapping Without Odometry, Alistair Dobke, Joshua Vasquez, Lauren Lieu, Ben Chasnov, Christopher Clark, Ian Dunn, Zoë J. Wood, Timothy Gambin Aug 2013

Towards Three-Dimensional Underwater Mapping Without Odometry, Alistair Dobke, Joshua Vasquez, Lauren Lieu, Ben Chasnov, Christopher Clark, Ian Dunn, Zoë J. Wood, Timothy Gambin

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper presents a method for the creation of three-dimensional maps of underwater cisterns and wells using a submersible robot equipped with two scanning sonars and a compass. Previous work in this area utilized a particle filter to perform offline simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) in two dimensions using a single sonar [11]. This work utilizes scan matching and incorporates an additional sonar that scans in a perpendicular plane. Given a set of overlapping horizontal and vertical sonar scans, an algorithm was implemented to map underwater chambers by matching sets of scans using a weighted iterative closest point (ICP) method. …

A Class-C Amplifier Linearized By A Constant Conduction Angle Biasing Circuit, Gursewak Singh Rai, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Stephen Garber Aug 2013

A Class-C Amplifier Linearized By A Constant Conduction Angle Biasing Circuit, Gursewak Singh Rai, Vladimir I. Prodanov, Stephen Garber

Electrical Engineering

This work presents a dynamic biasing topology capable of linearizing a Class-C power amplifier (PA). The topology utilizes a control loop that senses the operating conditions of the power device by means of a scaled replica. The loop operates on the principle of keeping the conduction angle constant and thereby ensuring linearity. The work details some of the design considerations that should prove useful to a designer wanting to implement the topology in an RF integrated circuit. Measurement results from a fully-functional low-frequency prototype bring merit to the topology.

STAR Program Research Presentations

With the ever increasing population of Earth, it becomes crucial that the integrity of our food supply is maintained; outbreaks of food borne pathogens can affect people on a much grander scale if they this is not so. This research project set out to test whether it was possible to test for multiple pathogens in a single sample via a single assay, and if that was possible, what are the limits of detection (LOD) of this assay? The assay involved the use of magnetic micro-beads coupled with predesigned primers and biotinylated TaqMan probes that would report the presence of proteins …

Testing Compounds As Sole Carbon Sources Of Strains Isolated From The Hot Lake Phototrophic Mat, Lyzbeth Becerra, Stephen Lindemann

STAR Program Research Presentations

Hot Lake is a meromictic, epsomitic lake. It has a phototrophic microbial mat that reassembles every year. The mat community is subjected to large fluctuations of salinity and solar irradiance. PNNL is interested in studying how these communities respond to the fluctuating environment conditions. To date, 70 isolates have been obtained from Hot Lake with the intention of characterizing their physiology to gain a better understanding of how they are naturally functioning in the Hot Lake mat community. I tested eight of these isolates in media designed to mimic the chemistry of Hot Lake with a selection of sugars, amino …

Detection Of Salmonella Enterica, Escherichia Coli O157 And Listeria Monocytogenes Through Bead Based Magpix® Fluidics, Karamveer Singh, Francisco Fernandez, Sonam Sahni, Alejandro Calderón-Urrea Aug 2013

Detection Of Salmonella Enterica, Escherichia Coli O157 And Listeria Monocytogenes Through Bead Based Magpix® Fluidics, Karamveer Singh, Francisco Fernandez, Sonam Sahni, Alejandro Calderón-Urrea

STAR Program Research Presentations

The research is testing the limits of detection and multiplexing with the use of three pathogens with the machine created from Luminex called Magpix. The pathogens are Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Escherichia Coli O157. The gene that is being focused on for each pathogen is invA for Salmonella, hlyA for listeria, and hlyA for Escherichia Coli. In this research, we started with prepared probes that were attached to the magnetic microsphere beads. Then we extracted and amplify the DNA. Furthermore, the probes were combined to the amplified DNA and used this in Magpix which gave a corresponding MFI value.

Wireless Cloud Architecture Based On Thin Clients And Ontologies, Todor Cooklev, Lubomir Stanchev, Chao Chen Aug 2013

Wireless Cloud Architecture Based On Thin Clients And Ontologies, Todor Cooklev, Lubomir Stanchev, Chao Chen

Computer Science and Software Engineering

Recently, several researchers have discovered the need for radios to use description techniques for the objects in the wireless realm. The concept of RF field-programmable analog array (FPAA) was also proposed recently and the lack of hardware abstractions was identified as a problem. We propose a hardware abstraction for RF FPAAs, which enables an open RF-digital interface. We advance the concept of wireless thin clients. These clients are connected to the cloud using the open RF-digital interface. We describe the architecture of a comprehensive wireless ontology.

Big Data: Immediate Opportunities And Longer Term Challenges, Jens Pohl, Kym Jason Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The transformation of words, locations, and human interactions into digital data forms the basis of trend detection and information extraction opportunities that can be automated with the increasing availability of relatively inexpensive computer storage and processing technology. Trend detection, which focuses on what, is facilitated by the ability to apply analytics to an entire corpus of data instead of a random sample. Since the corpus essentially includes all data within a population there is no need to apply any of the precautions that are in order to ensure the representativeness of a sample in traditional statistical analysis. Several examples are …

Master's Theses

CONSTRUCTING AND OPTIMIZING A SINGLE WAFER SOLAR CELL ARRAY IN THE MICROFABRICATION LAB AT CALIFORNIA POLYTECHNIC STATE UNIVERSITY AT SAN LUIS OBISPO

Solar cells are more and more becoming a significant source of energy in the world today. They are used to power entire buildings as well as small devices and everything in between, and are utilized all around the world. Smaller solar devices, such as hearing aid battery chargers, cost a lot of money relative to the monetary wealth in third-world countries. For this purpose, a less expensive, more efficient solar cell array should be developed.

Metamaterial Enhanced Wireless Power Transmission System, Travis Jade Heffernan Jul 2013

Metamaterial Enhanced Wireless Power Transmission System, Travis Jade Heffernan

Master's Theses

Nikolai Tesla's revolutionary experiments demonstrated the possible benefits of transmitting power wirelessly as early as 1891. Applications for the military, consumers, emergency personnel, remote sensors, and others use Tesla’s discovery of wireless power. Wireless power transmission (WPT) has the potential to be a common source of consumable energy, but it will only receive serious consideration if the transmit and receive systems are extremely efficient and capable of delivering usable amounts of power. Research has been conducted to improve the efficiency and performance of nearly every aspect of WPT systems, but the relatively new field of metamaterials (MTMs) has yet to …

The Interdisciplinary Design Studio: Identifyingcollaboration, Thomas Fowler, Iv, Kevin Dong, James Doerfler

Architecture

Intuitively designers know that teamwork is necessary to produce a cohesive project. Collaborative team work, or team work across disciplines, is a fundamental basis for firms such as Arups and Buro Happold among others and these firms are known for producing innovative work as a result of their collaborative efforts. Studies have shown that collaborative efforts can produce new and original ideas not possible in a uni-disciplinary setting1. The potential to develop intriguing design solutions while requiring students to work in multi-disciplinary teams is one of the primary goals for an ongoing design studio course at the California Polytechnic State …
