Static Magnetic Susceptibility Of Zn1-XMnXSe, J. K. Furdyna, N. Samarth, Richard B. Frankel, J. Spalek
Static Magnetic Susceptibility Of Zn1-XMnXSe, J. K. Furdyna, N. Samarth, Richard B. Frankel, J. Spalek
Physics
We present results of an investigation of the static magnetic susceptibility of Zn1-xMnxSe for x=0.05, 0.15, 0.30, and 0.45. From the Curie-Weiss behavior of the susceptibility at high temperatures, we determine the effective Mn-Mn exchange constant J1 to be -13.5±0.95 K. By using the results of our study in conjunction with direct measurements of the nearest-neighbor exchange integral JNN from inelastic neutron scattering by nearest-neighbor pairs, we obtain an estimate of the next-nearest-neighbor exchange constant J2=-2.4 K.

Effect Of Temperature, Moisture, And Soil Texture On Dcpa Degradation, J. S. Choi, T. W. Fermanian, David J. Wehner, L. A. Spomer
Effect Of Temperature, Moisture, And Soil Texture On Dcpa Degradation, J. S. Choi, T. W. Fermanian, David J. Wehner, L. A. Spomer
Office of the Dean (CAFES) Scholarship
Turf managers sometimes experience poor or early loss of control of targeted weeds, even when herbicides are applied at recommended rates. This study was conducted to determine the influence of soil temperature and moisture on the rate of DCPA (dimethyl tetrachloroterephthalate) degradation in soil. The effect of six soil temperatures, three soil moistures, and three soil textures on the degradation of DCPA was measured in the laboratory through HPLC analysis. Soil temperature influenced the rate of DCPA degradation in the following order: 10<<15<<20<25=30>35°C. The average half-life ranged from 92 d at 10°C to 18 d at 30°C. Soil moisture …<15<<20<25=30>

The dissemination of information by extension agents on dairy management practices used to control mastitis and the reception and use of that information by producers are investigated. Producers are surveyed to determine current practices used. The relationship between milk yield, somatic cell count, management practices, and producer and production characteristics is estimated. Subjective probabilities are elicited from "expert," extension agents, and producers concerning the impact and cost of various management practices. Subjective marginal value products and marginal input costs are computed and compared for the respondent groups. Stochastic dominance is used to rank the relative importance of the practices as …

Observation Of Substitutional Site Preference In A Quasicrystal And Implication On Local Structure, M. Eibschütz, M. E. Lines, H. S. Chen, J. V. Waszczak, G. C. Papaefthymiou, Richard B. Frankel
Physics
A combination of magnetic susceptibility and Mössbauer measurements on quasicrystalline i-Al74Mn20-xFexSi6 (0.02≤x≤7.5) establishes that Mn atoms in i-Al74Mn20Si6 occupy two distinct classes of sites, and that Fe substitutes for only one of them. The two classes are distinguished by the possession or otherwise of a localized magnetic moment. The data are consistent with a structure of interconnecting Mackay icosahedra (MI) in which localized moments are possessed only by Mn atoms adjacent to "broken" MI connections. The implied connectivity of the resulting MI network is close to …
