Multi-Level Analytic Network Process Model To Mitigate Supply Chain Disruptions In Disaster Recovery Planning, Martina Ursula Kroener
Multi-Level Analytic Network Process Model To Mitigate Supply Chain Disruptions In Disaster Recovery Planning, Martina Ursula Kroener
Master's Theses
Over the past few decades, environmental changes have led to more frequent occurrences and greater intensities of natural disasters worldwide. In terms of globally connected supply chains, this has resulted in an enormous economical loss for corporations. Therefore, Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery (BC/DR) planning and management has become essential for businesses in order to protect their critical business flow. Yet there is a lack of systematic and transparent methodologies for companies to handle this problem.
Hence, this thesis introduces a novel approach to combine consecutive steps of the Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP) process within one application. The multi-criteria decision-making …
Predicting Changes To Source Code, Justin James Roll
Predicting Changes To Source Code, Justin James Roll
Master's Theses
Organizations typically use issue tracking systems (ITS) such as Jira to plan software releases and assign requirements to developers. Organizations typically also use source control management (SCM) repositories such as Git to track historical changes to a code-base. These ITS and SCM repositories contain valuable data that remains largely untapped. As developers churn through an organization, it becomes expensive for developers to spend time determining which software artifact must be modified to implement a requirement. In this work we created, developed, tested and evaluated a tool called Class Change Predictor, otherwise known as CCP, for predicting which class will implement …

Observations Of Nonlinear Internal Waves At A Persistent Coastal Upwelling Front, Ryan K. Walter, Marek Stastna, C. Brock Woodson, Stephen G. Monismith
Physics
We collected high-resolution observations of nonlinear internal waves (NLIWs) at a persistent upwelling front in the shallow coastal environment (~20 m) of northern Monterey Bay, CA. The coastal upwelling front forms between recently upwelled waters and warmer stratified waters that are trapped in the bay (upwelling shadow). The front propagates up and down the coast in the along-shore direction as a buoyant plume front due to modulation by strong diurnal wind forcing. The evolution of the coastal upwelling front, and the subsequent modulation of background environmental conditions, is examined using both individual events and composite day averages. We demonstrate that …

Lasers are commonly used in high-precision measurement and profiling systems. Some laser measurement systems are based on interferometry principles, and others are based on active triangulation, depending on requirements of the application. This paper describes an active triangulation laser measurement system for a specific application wherein the relative position of two fixed, rigid mechanical components is to be measured dynamically with high precision in six degrees of freedom (DOF). Potential applications include optical systems with feedback to control for mechanical vibration, such as target acquisition devices with multiple focal planes. The method uses an array of several laser emitters mounted …
Internal Bore Seasonality And Tidal Pumping Of Subthermocline Waters At The Head Of The Monterey Submarine Canyon, Ryan K. Walter, P. Joe Phelan
Internal Bore Seasonality And Tidal Pumping Of Subthermocline Waters At The Head Of The Monterey Submarine Canyon, Ryan K. Walter, P. Joe Phelan
Physics
This study utilizes more than a year of observations made in shallow waters (~30 m) at the head of the Monterey Submarine Canyon to assess variability in the physical environment and internal bore field. The interaction of the internal tide with the canyon rim results in a semidiurnal tidal period pumping of cold–water masses (subthermocline waters) onto the adjacent shelf (i.e., internal bores). These internal bores are shown to be significantly coherent with the local sea surface height with minimal spatial variability when comparing two sites near the canyon head region. During the summer months, and periods of strong regional …

Orbital Simulations On Deflecting Near Earth Objects By Directed Energy, Qicheng Zhang, Kevin J. Walsh, Carl Melis, Gary Hughes, Philip M. Lubin
Statistics
Laser ablation of a near-Earth object (NEO) on a collision course with Earth produces a cloud of ejecta that exerts a thrust on the NEO, deflecting it from its original trajectory. Ablation may be performed from afar by illuminating an Earth-targeting asteroid or comet with a stand-off "DE-STAR" system consisting of a large phased-array laser in Earth orbit. Alternatively, a much smaller stand-on "DE-STARLITE" system may travel alongside the target, slowly deflecting it from nearby over a long period. This paper presents orbital simulations comparing the effectiveness of both systems across a range of laser and NEO parameters. Simulated parameters …

T6ss Expression Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Intraspecific Competition, Alex Campbell
T6ss Expression Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus In Intraspecific Competition, Alex Campbell
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria has reached an alarming level. The recently discovered type VI secretion system (T6SS) appears to be a bacterial defense mechanism that could potentially become involved with addressing this concern. Previous studies suggest Vibrio spp. may express T6SS. In this study, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a common foodborne pathogen, is used as a model to study T6SS. The objectives of this study were to evaluate culturing conditions that would stimulate swarming motility in strains of V. parahaemolyticus and to detect for the presence of T6SS based on phenotypic criteria. Different media (BHI, TSAS), agar concentration (0.7%, 1%, 2%) …

Roborodentia 2016 - Autonomous Omnidirectional Ring Moving Robot, Matthew Ng, Darus Holmgren, Mytch Johnson
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Our team created an autonomous omnidirectional driving robot that was capable of small micro adjustments to accurately follow the black guide line using four motors. This omnidirectional robot used a linear potentiometer to raise and lower the grabbing mechanism. The grabbing mechanism was a claw with 3D printed extensions which increased the amount of rings that could be picked up in a single motion. We expect this methodology of quick driving and streamlined movements would be a deciding factor in scoring points for our team.

Food Sustainability At Cal Poly: Comparative Analysis Between Global And Local Distribution Of Produce Items, Ariana Brandao, Elizabeth Jacobs, Olivia Surnow, Stacy Olsen
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Baseline data for Cal Poly produce items purchased in 2014, were generated using food miles and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of transportation related impacts measured in units of global warming potential. A regional simulation of a local food system compiled using Harvest Santa Barbara serves as a model of a regional wholesale produce distributor. Research objectives aim to identify produce items that would significantly decrease food miles and transportation related impacts when sourced through a regional food distributor. Comparative analysis between the global and local food distribution systems, associated with 59 produce types illustrate tomatoes having the most significant impact …

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
It is a common practice to name a university’s buildings, fields, and monuments after its past presidents, prominent administrators, or gracious donors. Starting from the school’s earliest days as a two-year vocational institution and continuing today as a four-year state university, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo frequently named buildings after notable individuals. But what distinguishes these certain people to be recognized with their name on a lasting artifact of this prestigious school? And how does the naming process operate? This paper explores why specific administrators and faculty between 1928-1988 were commemorated with their names on buildings at Cal Poly, while …

Multi-Level Route-Optimization Computer Application, Ryan Sutardji, Frank Nguyen
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
This report provides a detailed analysis on how to optimize driving routes by creating a computer application. There are many different route-optimization issues that logistical companies consistently face, as well as many different solutions and algorithms. With technology on the rise, pick-up, delivery, and transportation services are become a huge part of our everyday lives. When optimizing routes, reducing transportation costs by minimizing travel distance is always ideal, but other factors must be considered such as arriving at a location before or after a certain time. Our objective is to optimize driving routes based on travel distance and priorities. We …

Coeds Come To The Cal Poly Campus: The Return Of Female Students To Cal Poly, Kaylin A. Embrey
Coeds Come To The Cal Poly Campus: The Return Of Female Students To Cal Poly, Kaylin A. Embrey
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
During the years between 1929 and 1956, women were banned from attending Cal Poly. Women were among the first classes of Cal Poly students, but the crisis that was the Great Depression led to financial strains on higher education; ultimately Cal Poly chose to resolve burdens by eliminating women from the student body. After more than a quarter century of an all-male student population, women were re-admitted in 1956. With such an abrupt reversal in policy, the now coeducational institution faced many challenges. How would the male students respond? What were the expectations of the women students, and did these …

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
“College students don’t have to be music majors to participate in [band]. Only about quarter of the membership in [band] are music majors; the rest are students majoring in a variety of academic subjects...These enthusiastic students choose [band] to play their instruments1,” Doris Valliant, author of Going to College , explains. To choose to be a part of the band program at a university may be about fulfilling one’s enjoyment of playing their instrument, but it is also about the service and important role they provide, influencing and impacting the university. Thus, allowing college band programs to be the success …

Cal Poly Women: Roles And Depictions During World War Ii, Elena P. Sullivan
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
When the United States entered World War II as an Allied Power in 1941, educational institutions across the nation felt the impact of the conflict abroad. The California State Polytechnic School President Julian McPhee declared that the university was dedicated to the “all-out war effort” and pledged that all administration, instructors, and students were ready to “exert whatever extra energy is needed to bring final and complete victory to America’s cause.” For Cal Poly, this meant the implementation (and exclusion) of several activities. Our senior project involved creating a simple dating application and service. From other dating applications, we observed that the logistics of scheduling a first date are a tedious way to start a conversation with someone you've never met. The main concept of our application was that it would use user schedule availability and their favorite cafes to automatically plan optimal dates.
We started the project with the intent of...
-
Working through the entire development cycle of a large project as a team
-
Devising techniques for determining overlapping preferences, especially when handling large amounts of location and time data

Probing The Fitting Accuracy Of Active Galaxy Spectra, Aaron T. Line
Probing The Fitting Accuracy Of Active Galaxy Spectra, Aaron T. Line
Physics
Prior to this study, Dr. Vardha N. Bennert and collaborators selected a sample of ~100 local active galaxies to study the relationships between black hole mass and host galaxy properties. The broad Hβ width is necessary to determine black hole mass. This value is determined using a spectral decomposition code was scripted in IDL by Dr. Daeseong Park. The script fit spectral features and collected data for properties such as width of emission lines and continuum contribution percentages. The results were logged for further analysis.
To probe the accuracy of the fitting process, artificial spectra were created and fitted to …

Master's Theses
The only official documentation of the lawmaking process at the California Legislature is unedited video recordings of committee hearings, bill texts, votes and analyses. While the bills resulting from these hearings are clear, using video recordings to understand how a bill was created is far too laborious for the average citizen. To increase public transparency, a service that provides easier access to the bill creation process was needed. In response to this need, the Digital Democracy initiative was established at Cal Poly by the Honorable Sam Blakeslee, former California State Senator and founder of the Institute for Advanced Technology and …
