Review Of Irving Gill And The Architecture Of Reform By Thomas S. Hines, Bruno Giberti
Review Of Irving Gill And The Architecture Of Reform By Thomas S. Hines, Bruno Giberti
Architecture
In a 1916 essay that was probably his most important written statement, Irving Gill railed against contemporary historicism and argued for a return to origins: "the straight line, the arch, the cube and the circle." His ideal was not the primitive hut but an equally convincing trope that he called "the stone in the meadow." This phrase implied a method by which the rational was to be brought into an intimate relationship with the organic: "We should build our house simple, plain and substantial as a boulder, then leave the ornamentation of it to Nature."
Mother-Child Conversation And Children's Understanding Of Biological And Nonbiological Changes In Size, Jennifer Jipson, Maureen A. Callanan
Mother-Child Conversation And Children's Understanding Of Biological And Nonbiological Changes In Size, Jennifer Jipson, Maureen A. Callanan
Psychology and Child Development
This article explores the ways that mothers and children from primarily middle-income European American backgrounds reason about events in which biological and nonbiological objects change in size. In Study 1, mother–child conversations were examined to investigate the events mothers described as growth, as well as the ways mothers explained events occurring in different domains. Findings indicate that although mothers primarily discussed events in domain-specific ways, they exhibited some domain blurring in their talk to children. In Study 2,3-year-old children (M = 3 years, 2 months) and 5-year-old children (M = 5 years) provided descriptions and explanations of the same events. …
Public Goods And The Value Of Product Quality Regulations: The Case Of Food Safety, Stephen F. Hamilton, David L. Sunding, David Zilberman
Public Goods And The Value Of Product Quality Regulations: The Case Of Food Safety, Stephen F. Hamilton, David L. Sunding, David Zilberman
Economics
The paper examines preferences for product quality regulations. Our premise is that preferences for product quality regulations derive from preferences for both private and public goods. The model is used to explain public attitudes toward a referendum measure to eliminate pesticide residues on food. Results from a survey of consumers are consistent with the conceptual model and show that preferences for public goods influence support for the product quality regulation. The results help explain why consumption behavior is a poor predictor of political behavior, and have implications for methods that use voting and market behavior to value public goods.

Office of the Dean (CAED) Scholarship
When SPUR, one of our affiliates, asked me to write an article about the California Futures Network, the request came at a time when CFN itself is going through an examination of its own future direction and is still implementing changes that came out of a major Strategic Plan process in 2001-2002.CFN had a major success last year in having the Governor sign AB 857, which for the first time sets state policy priorities for guiding future capital and infrastructure projects. With this achievement, CFN has become a visible force in the policy reform movement, and has an opportunity to …
Strategies For Improving Neural Signal Detection Using A Neural-Electronic Interface, Robert B. Szlavik
Strategies For Improving Neural Signal Detection Using A Neural-Electronic Interface, Robert B. Szlavik
Biomedical Engineering
There have been various theoretical and experimental studies presented in the literature that focus on interfacing neurons with discrete electronic devices, such as transistors. From both a theoretical and experimental perspective, these studies have emphasized the variability in the characteristics of the detected action potential from the nerve cell. The demonstrated lack of reproducible fidelity of the nerve cell action potential at the device junction would make it impractical to implement these devices in any neural prosthetic application where reliable detection of the action potential was a prerequisite. In this study, the effects of several different physical parameters on the …

Earth and Soil Sciences
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) manages rights of ways that transect 41 m H (101m ac) and span over 3000 m (9000 ft) in elevation from seashore to sup alpine. There are approximately 4,900 native and 1,000 naturalized alien plant species in California. Only a few hundred are reliably useful in erosion and sediment control. Specifying native and naturalized vegetation mixes for use in hydroseeding or plug planting in conjunction with mechanical erosion control methods can have varying result for minimizing accelerated soil erosion. To investigate these factors, Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, in conjunction with Caltrans and CSU, …
