The Sustainable Land Initiative (SLI) is a collaborative program between farmers, Resource Conservation Districts (RCDs), and universities that is aimed at hastening the California agricultural industry’s adoption of climate-smart agriculture (CSA) practices to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change on the environment. One aspect of the program involves removing the various barriers that local farmers face during the CSA practice adoption process, which includes a lack of outreach and education. The Leaning Pine Arboretum, located on the campus of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, was founded in 1973 by a conglomerate of faculty of the horticultural sciences. The author sat with current and retired faculty to curate a written history based on oral interviews which investigated the development of the 5-acre garden across fifty years of volunteer work, student employees, class projects, and senior projects. The construction industry significantly contributes to environmental waste, notably through the extensive use of plastic water bottles for hydrating field personnel. This case study investigates the hydration practices of a midsize construction company in the Bay Area, focusing on the volume of plastic waste generated and potential sustainable alternatives. Data were collected via surveys sent to 15 employees, revealing that approximately 130,416 plastic bottles are used annually across 11 project sites. Despite the convenience and compliance with OSHA regulations, the reliance on single-use plastic bottles presents severe environmental and health concerns, such as resource depletion and microplastic pollution. This paper discusses the design and construction of a lean-to-shade structure built for the Son Care Foundation in San Luis Obispo. The Son Care Foundation is a nonprofit organization that raises guide dogs for veterans and first responders with PTSD. This shade structure is 16 feet long and 6 feet wide, its height slopes from 9 feet in the front down to 8 feet in the back creating a roof pitch of 2:12. This study investigates how a vulnerability lesson, integrated into a construction management university course, impacts women’s comfort levels in showing vulnerability in their early careers. This work describes the design of an EEG-based neurofeedback system which provides users with real-time feedback on their level of focus or relaxation. By analyzing the spectral content of the brain activity measured via scalp electrodes, focus and relaxation levels can be quantified. To track head trauma in football, our device is placed inside a football helmet to measure both linear and gyroscopic (rotational) accelerations. These measurements are taken using an ADXL375 linear accelerometer and an LSM6DSOX accelerometer and gyroscope. The data from these sensors is processed and transmitted wirelessly by a SparkFun Thing Plus microcontroller to another SparkFun Thing Plus microcontroller connected to a laptop on the sidelines. Our program on the laptop stores the acceleration impact data into a .csv file for each player. If a likely concussive impact is detected, the program displays a popup warning. The Senior Project for the 3D Printed Aircraft presents a compelling challenge to the team: design and fabricate an aircraft for the Cal State LA 3D-Printed Fixed-Wing Aircraft Competition, comprising three distinct events: Flight, Design, and Simulation. The objective of the flight competition is to achieve the longest flight duration, while the design event emphasizes innovation and originality. In the Simulation contest, our aircraft's CAD model undergoes Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis to assess its aerodynamic performance. These competitions are slated for May 2024.

As part of our team’s participation in the 2024 Hydropower Collegiate Competition, our team constructed and iterated a small-scale Kaplan turbine using a custom-designed test rig and dynamometer. While our model was vastly simplified from what is used in the real world, the process gave us exposure to design procedures and hydrological techniques for turbine design. Crucially, we learned that while analytical models and theory are valid tools as starting points, the use of computational and experimental models is key to developing sound designs.

The team developed an innovative system to address the issue of ice accumulation on cryogenic vaporizers at the Entegris facility.
