Randomized Controlled Intervention To Reduce Bisphenol A Exposure In Women, Allison Smouse, Mikaela Streeter Jun 2015

Randomized Controlled Intervention To Reduce Bisphenol A Exposure In Women, Allison Smouse, Mikaela Streeter

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure is recognized as having negative health effects and is related to weight gain, obesity, and some cancers3 • More troubling is that BPA is present in all aspects of life, including most plastic containers, make-up and shave creams, non-organic foods, etc. The aim of this project is to determine the effectiveness of a lifestyle intervention program designed to limit exposure to BPA. Twenty, healthy women with high baseline BPA exposure will be randomized (N=lO) to reduce BPA exposure or control (N=lO). The control group (n=lO) will receive basic health care information about BP A exposure, and …

The Garden Project, Jillian Broeckel-Bleher, Ellie Gertler, Georgia O'Farrell

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

The Garden Project, San Luis Obispo is a program that rehabilitates inmates through restorative justice practices at the San Luis Obispo County Jail. The program offers inmates at both the men’s and women’s honor farms opportunities to connect to the land through physical gardening practices, establish relationships with other inmates as well as outside volunteers, gain vocational skills that will benefit inmates upon their release, and ultimately empower inmates to become confident and productive members of the community.

Application Of Pyroprinting For Source Tracking Of E. Coli In Pennington Creek, Charles Moritz, Dillon Shapiro, Christopher Pann Jun 2015

Application Of Pyroprinting For Source Tracking Of E. Coli In Pennington Creek, Charles Moritz, Dillon Shapiro, Christopher Pann

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

The goal of this project is to determine the source of fecal contamination in Pennington Creek. Dangerously high numbers of E. coli were recorded in the creek by the Morro Bay National Estuary Program (MBNEP) over the last 10 years. This is of particular concern because the creek runs directly through an outdoor school for K-12 education. One potential source of the contamination is the cattle in fields on either side of the creek for several miles, though they are supposedly kept out by fences. Another possibility is local wildlife—specifically wild turkeys, which roam around in flocks of over 100 …

Growers can more efficiently use their land if they grow from transplants than from seed. Headstart Nursery started in 1979 to supply Christopher Ranch, well-known for their garlic products, with bell pepper transplants. Since then, Headstart expanded their transplant line to other Salinas Valley crops and even flowers. Transplants are labor intensive; Headstart has been innovative with their human resource management policies and practices.

Characterization Of Pressure-Driven And Electro-Kinetically Driven Flow In A Micro-Fluidic Chip Using Particle Imaging Velocimetry, Alexis Weckel Jun 2015

Characterization Of Pressure-Driven And Electro-Kinetically Driven Flow In A Micro-Fluidic Chip Using Particle Imaging Velocimetry, Alexis Weckel

Master's Theses

The flow profiles of pressure-driven and electro-kinetic driven flows were compared for a microfluidic chip. It was found that the pressure-driven flow had a parabolic profile while the electro-kinetic flow had a plug shaped flow profile. The measured velocities were similar to those determined by the Poiseuille flow model and the Helmholtz-Smoltchowski equation. Flow uniformity is very important for control in microfluidic mixers. Parabolic flow profiles lead to inconsistent reactions while the more uniform plug shape flow allow for a more steady reaction across the channel. Previous work had been performed to measure the flow of a solution of fluorescent …

Analysis Of The United States Hop Market, Michael W. Dasso Jun 2015

Analysis Of The United States Hop Market, Michael W. Dasso

Master's Theses

Hops are one of the four main ingredients used to produce beer. Many studies have been done to analyze the science behind growing and harvesting hops, creating hop hybrids, and how to brew beer with hops. However, there has been little research done revolving around the economic demand and supply model of the hop market. The objectives of this study are to create an econometric model of supply and demand of hops in the United States from 1981 to 2012, and to identify important exogenous variables that explain the supply and demand of hops using the two-stage least squares (2SLS) …

Printed Circuit Board For Introductory Animatronics Course, Preston Brown Jun 2015

Printed Circuit Board For Introductory Animatronics Course, Preston Brown

Computer Engineering

For many years, freshmen Computer Engineering students at California Polytechnic State University have taken a course that introduces them to the “processes of electronics manufacturing. They are lectured on concepts such as CAD/CAM design, Design for Manufacture (DFM), documentation requirements, prototyping and production planning”. The laboratory portion of the course allows students to “use hands-on techniques to solidify knowledge of project planning, soldering, automation, hand tool usage and production methods” by manufacturing their own power supply, starting with aluminum sheets, a bag of components, and and an unassembled printed circuit board (PCB).

While the project is popular among students, department …

Fire Hazard Analysis Of Technical Area 53 Building 1, Los Alamos National Lab, Brett L. Noakes Jun 2015

Fire Hazard Analysis Of Technical Area 53 Building 1, Los Alamos National Lab, Brett L. Noakes

Fire Protection Engineering: Culminating Experience Project Reports

This is an analysis of a 1970’s vintage building as it is compared to current building codes and standards. The purpose of this document is to assess if the current, as found construction of an existing building could achieve the sometimes more restrictive modern building codes. Both a prescriptive analysis and a performance-based analysis were completed to verify life-safety concerns and criteria as well as construction criteria. The prescriptive analysis compared existing, as found construction to current codes and standards while the prescriptive analysis used modern fire modeling techniques to see how likely fire scenarios would challenge the structure, if …

Effect Of Time Delay Between Etching And Adhesive Bonding (“Outlife” Time) On Lap-Shear Strength Of Aluminum Alloys Using Environmentally-Friendly P2 Etch, Josh Barkhimer, Matthew Erich, Gokul Nair

Materials Engineering

Raytheon Company currently uses a Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) paste etchant for preparing aluminum surfaces for adhesive bonding, and FPL is a source of hazardous hexavalent chromium. The goal of this study was to evaluate a less-toxic P2 paste etchant as a possible replacement. Coupons of 2024-T3, 6061-T6, and 7075-T6 grades of aluminum alloy were solvent-degreased, abrasively cleaned, and etched at room temperature using P2 paste following a strict protocol adopted from Raytheon. Coupons were then left exposed to air for assigned time intervals (or “outlife” times) of 0, 1, 4, 8, 16, and 63 or 72 hours. The aluminum …

Shark Alert: Early Warning System, Cory Peterson, Marc Rauschnot, Taylor Mcclain

Electrical Engineering

The Shark Alert Early Warning System is a device geared toward avid beach goers such as surfers, divers, and swimmers. The system is composed of an ultrasonic transmitter mounted on a shark’s dorsal fin and a receiver worn by the user around the ankle. The receiver alerts the user to the presence of a shark upon ultrasonic signal detection.

The receiver warns the user through both visual and tactile (vibration) alerts to ensure user notification. This circuit was built and tested in the EE labs and Recreation Center pools to determine transmission range. The receiver detects the transmitted signal up …
