Contactless Charging Adapter, Kevin Nguyen, Emmett Stetz, Joseph Pacheco
Electrical Engineering
Currently, most cell phones utilize wired adapters to charge, which cause a minor hassle when one frequently needs to unplug and replug their device whenever they pick it up to use while it is charging. The charging adapter is a pad that phones can be placed on to wirelessly charge the device. The charging adapter consists of two components: the wireless charging platform to supply and transmit the power, and the wireless charging receiver for phones that do not already have an internal receiver included, specifically targeting newer generation iPhones that utilize a lightning port (i.e. iPhone 5, 6, 6s, …

Associations Between Breastfeeding And Maternal Responsiveness: A Systematic Review Of The Literature, Alison K. Ventura
Kinesiology and Public Health
Recent recommendations and prevention programs have focused on the promotion of responsive feeding during infancy, but more research is needed to understand best practices for fostering responsive feeding during early life. The objective of this systematic review was to synthesize the accumulating bodies of evidence aimed at understanding associations between mothers' feeding experiences and responsive feeding in an attempt to clarify the nature of associations between feeding mode and responsive feeding. A literature search was conducted between January and October 2016; articles were collected from PsychINFO, Medline, and CINAHL, as well as from references in published research and reviews. Article …
Rules Based Analysis Engine For Application Layer Ids, David Scrobonia
Rules Based Analysis Engine For Application Layer Ids, David Scrobonia
Master's Theses
Web application attack volume, complexity, and costs have risen as people, companies, and entire industries move online. Solutions implemented to defend web applications against malicious activity have traditionally been implemented at the network or host layer. While this is helpful for detecting some attacks, it does not provide the gran- ularity to see malicious behavior occurring at the application layer. The AppSensor project, an application level intrusion detection system (IDS), is an example of a tool that operates in this layer. AppSensor monitors users within the application by observing activity in suspicious areas not able to be seen by traditional …

Mandatory Pay Transparency And Internal Wage Audits: Governmental Oversight To Bridge The Gender Pay Divide, Carol Janssen
Mandatory Pay Transparency And Internal Wage Audits: Governmental Oversight To Bridge The Gender Pay Divide, Carol Janssen
Paideia
The goal of equal pay, to ensure fairness in compensation, established in the mid-twentieth century has remained elusive. Today, women in the United States still earn 79 cents on the dollar. The lack of pay transparency prevents market forces from providing equal compensation for substantially similar work and permits discrimination to occur. The Equal Pay Act of 1963 (EPA) provides a litigation remedy to compensate victims of discrimination but this remedy, although initially successful in reducing the gap, has failed to close the divide. Instead of amending the EPA, an alternate solution to address this market failure includes mandatory pay …

Workplace Posture Assessment And Biofeedback With Kinect, Matthew Crussell
Workplace Posture Assessment And Biofeedback With Kinect, Matthew Crussell
Master's Theses
With the prevalence of computing, many workers today are confined to desk within an office. By sitting in these positions for long periods of time, workers are prone to develop one of many musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), such as carpal tunnel syndrome. In order to prevent MSDs in the long term, workers must employ good sitting habits. One promising method to ensure good workplace posture is through camera monitoring. To date, camera systems have been used in determining posture in a clean environment. However, an occluded and cluttered background, which is typical in an office setting, imposes a great challenge for …

Digging Deeper: Uncovering The Aftermath Of Kristin Smart’S Disappearance, Kailyn Pope
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper will discuss two major components of past crimes at Cal Poly: the attentive student response to Kristin Smart’s 1996 disappearance in light of possible shortcomings of authorities, and how events such as these have shaped campus safety policies and regulations since the 1990s. Kristin Smart’s disappearance, as well as other criminal acts against students in the 1990s and beyond, brought the Cal Poly student community together in solidarity year after year with programs such as Take Back the Night. Even though the red handprints, indicators of areas in which someone had been sexually assaulted, have been removed from …

An Educational Video: Cal Poly Dairy Calf Management Procedures, Katie Nicole Vierra, Anthony Joseph Ferdinandi
Agricultural Education and Communication
In particular, dairy production in California is ranked one of the top five states in the United States that produces approximately 40 billion pounds of milk per year. California’s dairy industry is not only the largest milk producer in the nation, but it is also the most financially prominent in the agricultural industry. This industry lead is merely because of its careful management practices. The way calves are raised depend on the resources used, the natural environment present, and the operation of the dairy farm. Essentially, there are numerous ways to care for a cow and calf. However, the aim …

Kiteboarding is an ocean sport wherein the participant, also known as a kiter, uses a large inflatable bow shaped kite to plane across the ocean on a surfboard or wakeboard. The rider is connected to his or her kite via a control bar system. This control system allows the kiter to steer the kite and add or remove power from the kite, in order to change direction and increase or decrease speed. This senior project focused on creating a new control bar system to replace a control bar system manufactured by a kiteboarding company, Liquid Force. The current Liquid Force …

A Long, Slow March Toward Accessibility: Cal Poly’S Effort To Eliminate Barriers For Physically Disabled Students, Tyler Lopez
A Long, Slow March Toward Accessibility: Cal Poly’S Effort To Eliminate Barriers For Physically Disabled Students, Tyler Lopez
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper examines Cal Poly’s response to the 1973 Rehabilitation Act in the decade that followed. Cal Poly’s response, while passionate, was still mediocre as compared with other campuses within the California State University system. Cal Poly’s efforts to create an accessible campus fall comfortably into the timeline implied by federal legislation and national trends, although the fact that 11 other California State Universities established organizations to provide services for disabled students shows that Cal Poly was far from a leader among its peers. This is not to say that Cal Poly’s response to the issue to disabled students was …
