Skier's Edge: Biomechanical Analysis, Benjamin T. Johannes Mar 2020

Skier's Edge: Biomechanical Analysis, Benjamin T. Johannes

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

Skier’s Edge: Biomechanical Analysis

Benjamin T. Johannes

The Skier’s Edge trainer can be used by novice or expert skiers. Testing was performed to analyze if the use of the Skier’s Edge could reduce in shear forces of the valgus moment on the knee joint and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) due to lesser fatigue of muscle and a higher hamstring to quadricep (H/Q) ratio activity. This leads to a reduction of improper form and an increase in balance. Experiments performed observed the change in muscle activity with the use of the Skier’s Edge over time when compared to other forms …

Use Of Body Composition Imaging To Calculate 3-D Inertial Parameters For Inverse Dynamic Analysis Of Youth Pitching Arm Kinetics, Dalton James Jennings

Master's Theses

The objectives of this study were to 1) calculate participant-specific segment inertial parameters using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) data (referred to as full DXA-driven parameters) and compare the pitching arm kinetic predictions using full DXA-driven inverse dynamics vs scaled, DXA mass-driven (using DXA masses but scaled centers of mass and radii of gyration), and DXA scaled inverse dynamics(ID) (using the full DXA-driven inertial parameters averaged across all participants), 2) examine associations between full DXA-driven kinetics and body mass index (BMI) and 3) examine associations between full DXA-driven kinetics and segment mass index (SMI). Eighteen 10- to 11- year-olds pitched …

Insulative (Direct Current) Dielectrophoretic Foul-Less Filtration In Microfuidic Systems, Matthew A A Whitman Mar 2020

Insulative (Direct Current) Dielectrophoretic Foul-Less Filtration In Microfuidic Systems, Matthew A A Whitman

Master's Theses

Filtration is a technology that is used almost ubiquitously in society from uses raging from filtration of macroparticles from water to pharmaceutical grade filtration products to remove anything larger than a protein. However, with such a wide range of uses, most filtration products have the same issue; membrane clogging (fouling) that prevents continuous use and requires frequent maintenance. This thesis hypothesizes that by applying a direct current (DC) to an insulating array of posts, they will create a foul-less insulative dielectrophoretic filter (iDEP) that does not clog since particles will levitate above the insulating array.

This thesis tested an inherited …

Inactivation Of Foodborne Pathogens During Cider Fermentation, In A Cider Model System And Commerical Cider, Kathryn K. Yamada Mar 2020

Inactivation Of Foodborne Pathogens During Cider Fermentation, In A Cider Model System And Commerical Cider, Kathryn K. Yamada

Master's Theses

Hard cider is an alcoholic drink made from fermented crushed fruit, typically apples. The popularity of this fermented alcoholic beverage has been on the rise within the last decade. Historically, hard cider has been deemed safe due to the presence of ethanol and the low pH. Although there is lack of scientific evidence to prove that hard cider will and can be safe from foodborne pathogens. Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp., and Listeria monocytogenes are three predominate foodborne bacterial pathogens of concern in the food and beverage industry. Escherichia coli O157:H7 in particular has been associated with fresh produce and …

Biomedical Engineering

The Prosthetic Thumb Project is a senior design project completed by Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate students at California Polytechnic State University. This senior design project is aimed at designing a prosthetic thumb for a Cal Poly Pomona student who lost their thumb in an accident last year. The patient has ultimately lost between 30-40% of functionality of his left hand, and so we would like to give him that mobility back. Originally, the patient was worried about having a prosthesis, and wanted something more stagnant that would resemble the look of the thumb he lost. However, after working with him, we …

Esophageal Temperature Mapping And Monitoring Sheath, Nicole M. Rogers, Hillary Johnson, Alexander Silva

Biomedical Engineering

The purpose of this document is to provide a product development summary for an accessory device that joins an esophageal temperature probe and a mapping catheter together to be used during cardiac ablation. Catheter ablation therapy is performed in the left atrium, utilizing extremely hot or cold temperatures to create scar tissue and treat atrial fibrillation and other arrhythmias. The close positioning of the left atria adjacent to the esophagus presents a large risk as the extreme temperatures used during ablation can lead to esophageal damage or fistulas. This device is designed to integrate correlate data from the temperature probe …

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Implicates Ras Pathways In The Genetic Architecture Of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Jessica A. Kaczorowski, Taylor Smith, Amanda M. Shrewsbury, Leah R. Thomas, Valerie S. Knopik, Maria T. Acosta Feb 2020

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 Implicates Ras Pathways In The Genetic Architecture Of Neurodevelopmental Disorders, Jessica A. Kaczorowski, Taylor Smith, Amanda M. Shrewsbury, Leah R. Thomas, Valerie S. Knopik, Maria T. Acosta

Psychology and Child Development

The genetic architecture of neurodevelopmental disorders is largely polygenic, non-specific, and pleiotropic. This complex genetic architecture makes the search for specific etiological mechanisms that contribute to neurodevelopmental risk more challenging. Monogenic disorders provide an opportunity to focus in on how well-articulated signaling pathways contribute to risk for neurodevelopmental outcomes. This paper will focus on neurofbromatosis type 1 (NF1), a rare monogenic disorder that is associated with varied neurodevelopmental outcomes. Specifically, this paper will provide a brief overview of NF1 and its phenotypic associations with autism spectrum disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and specific learning disorders, describe how variation within the NF1 gene …

Biofilm Remediation By Extracellular Polymeric Substance (Eps) Modification, Matthew Borglin

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

With the help of the Baker Koob endowment this project was able to investigate the novel application of chemical modifiers on mature biofilms as a new potential method for its removal. The major challenge that this project initially faced was the designing an experimental procedure for consistent biofilm production in order for a comparison treatment across sampling surfaces and follow up experiments. However, the consistency was hard to determine until a reliable sampling method was established. Fortunately, after interacting with industry leaders in biofilm remediation technics a methodology was discovered that was recently approved by the Environmental Protection Agency as …

Off-Label Use Of Recreational Cannabis: Acid Reflux In Colorado, Jacqueline M. Doremus, Sarah S. Stith, Jacob M. Vigil Feb 2020

Off-Label Use Of Recreational Cannabis: Acid Reflux In Colorado, Jacqueline M. Doremus, Sarah S. Stith, Jacob M. Vigil

Economics

Medical cannabis access has been shown to affect clinical health outcomes and health care spending. Unlike medical access, which requires a doctor's recommendation for treatment and only applies to the limited conditions approved under the state's medical cannabis program, recreational access makes cannabis available over-the-counter (OTC). This may create additional benefits through off-label cannabis use to treat unlisted conditions, such as acid reflux, which affects two out of three Americans. Using the roll out of recreational dispensaries in Colorado in 2014, we estimate the change in retailers' market share of antacid medications using a difference-in-differences design. Antacid market share decreases …

Can Oral Contraceptives Increase Antibiotic Resistance In Escherichia Coli?, Allison Helene Clatch, Leah Van Otterloo Dec 2019

Can Oral Contraceptives Increase Antibiotic Resistance In Escherichia Coli?, Allison Helene Clatch, Leah Van Otterloo

Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects

Antibiotic resistance is one of the most pressing threats to public health. Intrinsic resistance to many antimicrobials in Gram-negative bacteria is accomplished by naturally occurring efflux pumps. Efflux pumps are transmembrane proteins that can extrude antimicrobials from bacterial cytoplasm. Efflux pumps recognize a wide range of compounds including antibiotics, antiseptics, pesticides, and hormones. The upregulation of efflux pump genes in response to increasing concentrations of substrates has shown to increase resistance to toxic substrates. We hypothesize that efflux pump substrates other than antimicrobials, such as steroid hormones, will also induce the expression of efflux pump genes and consequently increase resistance …
