Fitness Plug, Evan Lee Ashley
Fitness Plug, Evan Lee Ashley
Computer Engineering
My parents only allowed me to play videogames or watch television for a certain number of minutes or hours per day. By limiting screen time, they encouraged me to be active and find other things to do outside of television or videogames. The Fitness Plug aims to do both by converting time exercised to entertainment time; you can only watch television or play videogames for as long as you have exercised.
Cascaded Voltage Clamping And Ldo Offline Power Supply, Elizabeth Davis, Timothy Jeong
Cascaded Voltage Clamping And Ldo Offline Power Supply, Elizabeth Davis, Timothy Jeong
Electrical Engineering
Offline power supplies are necessary for any sort of electronic device that utilizes wall power. For offline power supplies, it is a common practice to use the switching mode method where the high voltage AC input is first rectified and then switched at high frequency to a much lower voltage. This method has been known to be very efficient. Also, it’s more efficient than a linear supply method where the AC input is stepped down and then linearly regulated down to a low voltage. Despite the efficiency benefit, the switching method employs a high frequency transformer and inductor. This will …

Electrical Engineering
This project was developed with the purpose of creating an efficient energy management system for the DC House project, with a centralized 12V battery system fed by a 48V Multiple Input Single Output Source (MISO). The energy management system will consist of a bidirectional DC-DC converter. During the day when the renewable sources produce enough energy to fulfill the load’s energy demand, the converter will make use of the excess energy by taking a 48V DC input and stepping it down to a 12V DC output in order to charge a 12V 100 Ah battery. When renewable sources can no …

Energy And Economic Losses Due To Soiling On Utility Scale Pv Systems To Guide Timing Of Cost Effective Cleaning, Jackson P. Puckett, Maximilian M. Sosa, Brandon F. Grossman
Electrical Engineering
The energy and associated economic losses due to soiling on both residential and utility scale PV (photovoltaic) systems can be both significant and avoidable. Losses from 1.2% up to 6% have been reported, which is of interest to system operators [1]. Modules may be cleaned to reduce losses, but this comes with an offsetting economic cost. A quantification of energy losses, and the corresponding economic loss, will allow a determination of a closer to optimal cleaning schedule depending on the level of soiling and corresponding energy loss. Two methods are proposed and compared. Method 1 uses an ARES Soiling Measurement …

The design goal for this project is to create a system capable of creating a consistent testing environment for photovoltaic inverters and charge controllers. The solution is to create a photovoltaic emulator which is a DC power supply that would have the same electrical output characteristics to a photovoltaic panel. In current systems, consistency problems arise when depending on nature to conduct tests on PV modules because it is impossible to properly replicate scenarios while testing specific conditions. This project will provide the user the ability to test their PV modules under various parameters which replicate real-world scenarios such as …
Dual Axis Solar Panel Tracker, Xavier Joseph Lugue, Javier Harrison, Nicholas Ryan Wolfe
Dual Axis Solar Panel Tracker, Xavier Joseph Lugue, Javier Harrison, Nicholas Ryan Wolfe
Electrical Engineering
Photovoltaic systems generate more energy when orthogonally facing the sun where solar cells absorb the most light. By creating an effective, autonomous solar tracking system, the developed solar panels consistently generate maximum energy while using less power. Dual axis solar trackers surpass single axis trackers in energy generation, however, their cost and reliability provide a significant drawback. This project develops different algorithmic implementations designed to provide optimal and efficient behavior for photovoltaic systems. These algorithms adjust the solar panel’s position appropriately with the sun’s location, weather conditions, and selected operating modes. The solar tracking system’s operations include latitudinal axis capability …

One of the greatest challenges for aspiring musicians is the amount of practice and commitment required to become fluent in a traditional instrument. Taken a step further, individuals who have impaired motor skills may be incapable of even executing the physical demands required to practice one. While this device does not create notes directly from a user's brain waves, exploring and designing EEG based musical hardware capable of using a person’s thoughts to control musical devices could pave the way for greater advances. It can also open many doors into psycho-acoustic research, treating the mind's response to hearing music and …

Electrical Engineering
Alzheimer’s Disease ranks (AD) as one of the most common diseases in America. Currently, detecting Alzheimer’s Disease relies upon reported symptoms, however changes in the brain can manifest years or decades before symptoms appear. In recent years, researchers have successfully utilized Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for a variety of image classification tasks. Here, we train an ANN to detect Alzheimer’s Disease using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans. Giving an MRI to both a neural network and a doctor will allow the doctor to be more confident in their answer, as well as double-check their answer with an objective report …

Urban Planning: Post Pandemic America, Tess Houseman
City and Regional Planning
Today’s urban planners have little to no experience dealing with pandemics as the modern focus in the field has turned away from infectious disease and public health and realigned itself with modest, long-term, encompassing health goals. Considering this, this analysis will focus on two historical case studies of past pandemics and what took place in their planning aftermath. The information garnered will then be used to hypothesize what new changes to state general plan guidelines may be warranted to mitigate the impacts of future pandemics.

Therefore, many current networked medical devices operate without basic security services such …
Design Of A Custom Wrist Brace That Can Be 3d Printed From A Three-Dimensional Scan, James D. Baldwin
Design Of A Custom Wrist Brace That Can Be 3d Printed From A Three-Dimensional Scan, James D. Baldwin
Master's Theses
Current arm bracing and casting methods for distal forearm and wrist fractures can lead to varying negative medicinal affects such as tightness, skin breakdown and bacteria growth which can cause infection. This can be alleviated by a flexibly compliant and breathable design while keeping the arm and hand fixed at the wrist to promote proper wrist and forearm fracture healing. There have been attempts made to create a 3D printable brace from a three-dimensional scan but they do not account for full encapsulation of the wrist, removability without breaking the brace, nor for the brace being too tight and leading …

This thesis demonstrates efficacy of Octenyl Succinic Anhydride (OSA), as a biofilm sanitizer. Biofilms allow bacteria to adhere to solid surfaces with the use of excreted polymeric compounds. For example, surfaces found in food production or processing facilities such as the interior of a raw milk holding tank, are some of the most susceptible to biofilm contamination. When present, biofilms can cause a variety of negative effects, which include; reduction of product shelf life, corrosion, and outbreaks of foodborne illnesses. The close association of biofilms with the majority of foodborne illness cases led the US Environmental Protection …
Simulating Particle Packing During Powder Spreading For Selective Laser Melted Additive Manufacturing Using The Discrete Element Method In Abaqus, Priscilla Ng
Master's Theses
Metal additive manufacturing allows for the rapid production of complex parts that are otherwise impractical using conventional subtractive manufacturing techniques. Applications for additive manufacturing span across a broad array of industries including aerospace, automotive, and medical, among many others. One metric of printing success is material properties, including part density. While there has been extensive research completed for the density of printed parts, there is little published work concerning powder packing density on the build plate associated with powder spreading.
In this thesis, a Discrete Element Method (DEM) model was created in Abaqus to simulate the spreading behavior of particles …
Investigation Of Experimental Variation Of Bovine Sphingomyelin As A Novel Ingredient For Ultraviolet Protection, Esther Chen
Investigation Of Experimental Variation Of Bovine Sphingomyelin As A Novel Ingredient For Ultraviolet Protection, Esther Chen
Master's Theses
Skin cancer is a prevalent disease that globally affects 2-3 million people per year [1]. This number is expected to grow tenfold as depletion of the ozone layer contributes to harsher rays reaching Earth’s surface [2]. A common way to protect against those ultraviolet waves is to apply sunscreen, however, recent reports call into question the safety of some active ingredients as they can enter through the skin into the bloodstream [3]. This thesis aims to investigate an alternative solution that uses bovine sphingomyelin (BSM) as photoprotective solution against UV irradiation.
In order to evaluate the effectiveness of BSM against …

Museum displays with audio explanations typically use headphones. A speaker’s sound at one display interferes with patrons at other displays, thus museums use headphones. These devices are either integrated into the display itself, or attached to an mp3 player. When integrated into the display, headphones can be unsanitary; when attached to an mp3 player, these devices are inconvenient. If speakers can direct sound toward an intended area, headphones can be eliminated. Acoustic horns direct sound toward a specific point, but require a large spatial footprint. Acoustic spherical concave lenses also direct sound toward a point, but exhibit excessive acoustic attenuation. …
