Plastic Deformation, Vacancy Diffusion, And Vacancy Delocalization In Bcc 3He, Matthew J. Moelter, M. B. Manning, C. Elbaum Feb 1986

Plastic Deformation, Vacancy Diffusion, And Vacancy Delocalization In Bcc 3He, Matthew J. Moelter, M. B. Manning, C. Elbaum

Physics

The plastic deformation of bcc 3He crystals has been studied near the melting curve, in the temperature range 0.65 K ≤T≤.17 K, and for strain rates, ɛ˙, from 2x10-6 to 2x10-4 sec-1. The resulting relations between strain rate and stress, at a given temperature, are accounted for in terms of dislocation climb and vacancy diffusion in the solid He. The temperature dependence of the strain rate at a given stress indicates that a nonclassical mechanism underlies the deformation process. The vacancy diffusion coefficient in bcc 3He, as a function of temperature, is deduced from …

Nonfat Dairy Coffee Whitener Made From Ultrafiltered Skimmilk Retentates, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Frank V. Kosikowski Jan 1986

Nonfat Dairy Coffee Whitener Made From Ultrafiltered Skimmilk Retentates, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Frank V. Kosikowski

Dairy Science

Retentates of different protein concentrations obtained by ultrafiltration of skimmilk were freeze-dried and evaluated as nonfat dairy coffee whiteners. Blended in hot coffee the retentate whiteners containing added riboflavin gave a pH of 6.3-6.55, coffee whitening capacity comparable to a commercial nondairy coffee creamer, and acceptable dispersibility. The retentate nondairy whitener with optimum qualities contained 56% total protein, 0.5% fat, 31.0% carbohydrates, 1.92% calcium, and 27 mg sodium/100g.

Private Sector Shrinkage And The Growth Of Industrialized Economies, Michael L. Marlow Jan 1986

Private Sector Shrinkage And The Growth Of Industrialized Economies, Michael L. Marlow

Economics

Industrialized nations have experienced growing public sectors over this century. Measured as a share of total product, growing absorptions of resources by governments have altered the private-public sector mixes of industrialized economies. As displayed in Table 1, the average level of the public sector's share of gross domestic product (GDP) has risen from .32 to .40 over 1960 to 1980, respectively. Much of public sector growth stems from a rapid acceleration in public outlays on social expenditure: The average ratio of social expenditure to GDP has risen from .14 to .24 over the same period.

Evaluation Of Two Models For Light Transmission In Biological Materials, R. A. Cavaletto, S. Upadhyaya, M. O'Brien, T. Cahill Dec 1985

Evaluation Of Two Models For Light Transmission In Biological Materials, R. A. Cavaletto, S. Upadhyaya, M. O'Brien, T. Cahill

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Two light transmission models for biological materials are developed and evaluated. The energy balance model showed promise. It's developed as a 3 coefficient model permitting varied sample absorption and scattering properties. The second model performed unsatisfactorily.

Physics Of Some Environmental Aspects Of Energy, David W. Hafemeister Nov 1985

Physics Of Some Environmental Aspects Of Energy, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

Approximate numerical estimates are carried out on the following environmental effects from energy production and conservation: (1) The greenhouse effect caused by increased CO2 in the atmosphere; (2) Loss of coolant accidents in nuclear reactors; (3) Increased radon concentrations in buildings with very low air infiltration rates; (4) Acid rain from the combustion of fossil fuels; and (5) Explosions of liquified natural gas (LNG).

Energy Conservation In Large Buildings, A. Rosenfeld, David W. Hafemeister Nov 1985

Energy Conservation In Large Buildings, A. Rosenfeld, David W. Hafemeister

Physics

As energy prices rise, newly energy aware designers use better tools and technology to create energy efficient buildings. Thus the U.S. office stock (average age 20 years) uses 250 kBTU/ft2 of resource energy, but the guzzler of 1972 uses 500 (up × 2), and the 1986 ASHRAE standards call for 100–125 (less than 25% of their 1972 ancestors). Surprisingly, the first real cost of these efficient buildings has not risen since 1972. Scaling laws are used to calculate heat gains and losses of buildings to obtain the ΔT(free) which can be as large as 15–30 °C (30–60 °F) for …
