Direct Drive Solar Panel Control Circuit, Marcorios Bekheit May 2021

Direct Drive Solar Panel Control Circuit, Marcorios Bekheit

Physics

A control circuit is built for insulated solar electric cookers (ISEC). Power delivery and temperature safety are the focus. Using a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm, Arduino Nano, voltage and current sensors, and a buck converter, the solar panel’s output power was maximized for a direct load heat resistor with 3.5Ω for a range of solar intensities. Using a resistance temperature detector, a temperature sensor is built for safety shutoff.

Automation, Annunciation, And Emergency Safety Shutdown Of A Laboratory Microgrid Using A Real-Time Automation Controller (Rtac), Do Vo May 2021

Automation, Annunciation, And Emergency Safety Shutdown Of A Laboratory Microgrid Using A Real-Time Automation Controller (Rtac), Do Vo

Master's Theses

Over the last decade, microgrid deployments throughout the world have increased. In 2019, a record number of 546 microgrids were installed in the United States [1]. This trend continues upward to combat extreme weather conditions and power shortages throughout the country. To better equip students with the necessary skillsets and knowledge to advance in the microgrid field, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo's Electrical Engineering Department and the Power Energy Institute have invested resources to develop a laboratory microgrid.

This thesis sets to improve the laboratory microgrid's existing automation using the Schweitzer Engineering Laboratory SEL-3530 Real-time Automation Controller (RTAC). The improved …

Steel To Concrete Connections, Dylan Thompson May 2021

Steel To Concrete Connections, Dylan Thompson

Architectural Engineering

This project consists of the design, installation, and implications of steel beam to concrete wall connections. A new, modern single family home in Beverly Hills was the site of the connections. Calculations and details of gravity and drag beams were carried out, communication with the steel fabricator shop and the architect were performed, and a subsequent site visit to view construction methods was completed. Takeaways from the project were the economics of the connections designed, communication within separate disciplines on the site, and visualization of designed elements in the real-world.

Development Of The Cmacn Online, Asynchronous Course: An Exploration Of Professional Practices For Dispersing Digital Information, Jacob B. Morgan

Architectural Engineering

The collaborative development of the CMACN (Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada) online course, taught as ARCE-305 at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), fulfills the Architectural Engineering department’s vision to “Empower people through the balance of theory and practice to thrive professionally.” The collaboration used a team format consisting of faculty, undergraduate, and graduate students. The development team approached the creation of this course analogous to how a small firm would approach a project. The review and compilation of theory necessary to teach the course reinforced concepts critical to masonry design and construction. The development team’s goal during …

Standardizing Patient Generated Sleep And Step Data For Evidation Health, Jade Desmet, Monroe Erle, Jamie Cullen

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Since medical data has gone digital there has been a lack of standardization among wearable devices for managing the data. Evidation Health is a company that collects biometric data from a wide variety of wearable devices through their app, Achievement. Evidation is built upon a foundation of user privacy and control over permissioned health data. This project is in partnership with them, focusing on creating a standard data model and ETL tool for sleep and step data across the wearable devices Fitbit, Apple Watch, and Oura Ring. There is not yet a successful standardization for this health data, and the …

Design Of An Ultra-Wideband Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave Short Range Radar System For Extending Independent Living, Toai-Chi Nguyen Apr 2021

Design Of An Ultra-Wideband Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave Short Range Radar System For Extending Independent Living, Toai-Chi Nguyen

Master's Theses

Falls in the disabled and elderly people have been a cause of concern as they can be immobilized by the fall and have no way to contact others and seek assistance. The proposed frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) short range radar (SRR) system, which uses ultra-wideband (UWB) signals can provide immediate assistance by monitoring and detecting fall events. The unique characteristics of this system allow for a frequency-based modulation system to carry out triangulation and sense the location of the fall through the usage of a continuous chirp signal that linearly sweeps frequency. This project focuses on the development, design …
