Son Care Foundation - Shade Structure Construction, Nicole Bocanegra
Son Care Foundation - Shade Structure Construction, Nicole Bocanegra
Construction Management
This paper will outline the preconstruction and construction processes that took place to erect a shade structure for the Son Care Foundation. This project included the design, estimate, and construction of the 8 ft tall shade structure. The structure was composed of pressure-treated lumber, concrete, metal post bases, and corrugated metal roofing. While originally expected to be around 15 foot in length, the final structure ended up being closer to 20 feet long. Based on existing shade structure of the foundation, the roof of the shade structure is sloped one way towards the back of the structure. The construction and …

Construction Management
The California Veterans Assistance Foundation Service Dog Kennel Construction project gave back to our country’s veterans by constructing new kennels for their service dogs. The previous kennel on the veteran residential site needed an upgrade due to the increased number of service dogs at the shelter. A team of two Cal Poly Construction Management students consisting of Spencer Allen and Luke Terrio worked to design, estimate, coordinate, and construct a new kennel structure for the site. The roles were divided in the project between the preconstruction and construction phases. During pre-construction Spencer’s role was to schedule the job and create …
The Role Of Psychotherapy In Effective Integration Of Spiritually Transformative Experiences, Michael Deklerk
The Role Of Psychotherapy In Effective Integration Of Spiritually Transformative Experiences, Michael Deklerk
Social Sciences
Building upon the rich literature in the discipline of spiritually transformative experiences (STE) studies, this paper examined the role of psychotherapy in facilitating the integration of STE narratives. STEs are broadly defined as a discrete experience of an altered state of consciousness that brings about a profound transformation in the spiritual identity and life expression of the experiencer (Brook 2017). STEs include near death experiences, mystical experiences, spiritual energy or kundalini awakenings, diverse psychic experiences, and inspired creativity (Kason 1994). Current psychological frameworks, theories, and interventions for STE integration were reviewed. Additionally, one clinician registered with the American Center for …

Graphic Communication
The augmented, virtual, and mixed reality industry has grown significantly in recent years as technological advances improve user experiences. Together with an increasingly remote-work-enabled world, virtual reality (VR) presents an opportunity to provide immersive and interactive experiences no matter time nor place. In this project, we seek to evaluate the VR technology’s ability to match the educational outcomes of traditional in-person hands-on learning. Additionally, we seek to compare the effect of social presence on learning outcomes of students in educational VR simulations with a human-like instructor versus an abstract non-human instructor. To meet these research goals, we develop a VR …

Mechanical Engineering
This Senior Project report outlines the design for our senior project under the Mechanical Engineering department of California Polytechnic State University. Insulated solar electric cookers (ISEC) are a relatively novel and exciting solution to the ethical, environmental, and medical issues associated with the conventional cooking methods - burning of biomass and charcoal - practiced in nonindustrial countries around the world. ISECs use solar energy input from a solar panel to cook food within an insulated chamber and have been researched and developed by Dr. Peter Schartz and his research group over the past several years. However, our target users expressed …
Seed Longevity And Climatic Tolerance Of San Joaquin Wooly-Threads (Monolopia Congdonii; Asteraceae) An Endangered Plant From The San Joaquin Desert, California, Paul Excoffier
Master's Theses
San Joaquin wooly-threads (Monolopia congdonii; Asteraceae) is a federally-listed, endangered annual plant species from the desert areas of the San Joaquin Valley. Its limited range puts it at risk of extinction if the climate changes in such a way as to hinder its growth and reproduction. The primary aims of the study were to 1) determine how long-lived the seeds of the M. congdonii are, a key determinant of survival of desert annual plant populations through long droughts and 2) determine how severely hotter, drier conditions impact the ability of emerged plants to grow and reproduce. Secondarily, I …
Accelerating Graphics Rendering On Risc-V Gpus, Joshua Simpson
Accelerating Graphics Rendering On Risc-V Gpus, Joshua Simpson
Master's Theses
Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are commonly used to accelerate massively parallel workloads across a wide range of applications from machine learning to cryptocurrency mining. The original application for GPUs, however, was to accelerate graphics rendering which remains popular today through video gaming and video rendering. While GPUs began as fixed function hardware with minimal programmability, modern GPUs have adopted a design with many programmable cores and supporting fixed function hardware for rasterization, texture sampling, and render output tasks. This balance enables GPUs to be used for general purpose computing and still remain adept at graphics rendering. Previous work at the …
Artist-Configurable Node-Based Approach To Generate Procedural Brush Stroke Textures For Digital Painting, Keavon Chambers
Artist-Configurable Node-Based Approach To Generate Procedural Brush Stroke Textures For Digital Painting, Keavon Chambers
Master's Theses
Digital painting is the field of software designed to provide artists a virtual medium to emulate the experience and results of physical drawing. Several hardware and software components come together to form a whole workflow, ranging from the physical input devices, to the stroking process, to the texture content authorship. This thesis explores an artist-friendly approach to synthesize the textures that give life to digital brush strokes.
Most painting software provides a limited library of predefined brush textures. They aim to offer styles approximating physical media like paintbrushes, pencils, markers, and airbrushes. Often these are static bitmap textures that are …
Distribution And Ecological Function Of Pacific Lamprey In The San Luis Obispo Creek Watershed, Parker Kalan
Distribution And Ecological Function Of Pacific Lamprey In The San Luis Obispo Creek Watershed, Parker Kalan
Master's Theses
Pacific lamprey (Entosphenus tridentatus) is an endemic species to coastal watersheds along the Pacific Rim in North America and Asia. The species' geographic distribution is retracting and has not been mapped precisely, and the ability for the species to provide ecosystem services, such as water filtration, for supporting watershed management has not been tested. The San Luis Obispo Creek watershed, California, USA is at the southern end of Pacific lamprey’s retracting distribution, and the San Luis Obispo watershed is impacted by degraded water quality, making investigation of Pacific lamprey in the San Luis Obispo Creek watershed of direct …

Evaluation Of Automatic Text Summarization Using Synthetic Facts, Jaewook Ahn
Master's Theses
Automatic text summarization has achieved remarkable success with the development of deep neural networks and the availability of standardized benchmark datasets. It can generate fluent, human-like summaries. However, the unreliability of the existing evaluation metrics hinders its practical usage and slows down its progress. To address this issue, we propose an automatic reference-less text summarization evaluation system with dynamically generated synthetic facts. We hypothesize that if a system guarantees a summary that has all the facts that are 100% known in the synthetic document, it can provide natural interpretability and high feasibility in measuring factual consistency and comprehensiveness. To our …
Increasing The Effectiveness Of K-12 Stem Worshops Through Targeted Context And Creative Technolgies, Melina Lopez
Increasing The Effectiveness Of K-12 Stem Worshops Through Targeted Context And Creative Technolgies, Melina Lopez
Master's Theses
Economic projections reveal a need for one million more Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) professionals over the next decade than the United States is producing at the current rate. As a result, STEM education is a major focus of recent legislation and funding in Congress as the number of STEM professionals is inadequate to support innovation and the ever-changing economy. In response to the urgent need for more competitive STEM professionals, there has been a widespread implementation of workshops, organizations, and school programs aimed at amplifying K-12 student STEM literacy and interest. Some programs are even created to specifically …
Out-Of-Core Gpu Path Tracing On Large Instanced Scenes Via Geometry Streaming, Jeremy Berchtold
Out-Of-Core Gpu Path Tracing On Large Instanced Scenes Via Geometry Streaming, Jeremy Berchtold
Master's Theses
We present a technique for out-of-core GPU path tracing of arbitrarily large scenes that is compatible with hardware-accelerated ray-tracing. Our technique improves upon previous works by subdividing the scene spatially into streamable chunks that are loaded using a priority system that maximizes ray throughput and minimizes GPU memory usage. This allows for arbitrarily large scaling of scene complexity. Our system required under 19 minutes to render a solid color version of Disney's Moana Island scene (39.3 million instances, 261.1 million unique quads, and 82.4 billion instanced quads at a resolution of 1024x429 and 1024spp on an RTX 5000 (24GB memory …
Bearing Fault Detection And Classification Using Artificial Neural Networks, Harnak Singh
Bearing Fault Detection And Classification Using Artificial Neural Networks, Harnak Singh
Master's Theses
Bearings are the essential components of modern rotating machines. Bearing faults can cause severe machine damages or even breakdowns.
In recent years, artificial intelligence and deep learning have been successfully applied to fault detection. In this thesis, convolutional neural networks (CNN) are employed for bearing fault detection and classification. Computer simulations results demonstrate that the CNN based approach is advantageous over the conventional regression model, with an overall accuracy of 99.5%.
Effects Of Experimental Scale On The Adsorption Of Two Pharmaceutical Drugs Detected In Municipal Wastewater Effluent, Michael Moore
Effects Of Experimental Scale On The Adsorption Of Two Pharmaceutical Drugs Detected In Municipal Wastewater Effluent, Michael Moore
Master's Theses
Pharmaceutical drugs are being produced and consumed in increasing quantities every year and are poorly treated by conventional wastewater treatment processes, leading to increasing detection of such compounds in surface water, groundwater, and municipal drinking water. Soil aquifer treatment (SAT) is a promising method for treating these emerging compounds through combined adsorption and degradation of target compounds in soil. This thesis examines the consistency of results from typical studies like adsorption isotherms and soil columns utilized in analysis of SAT performance, across varying experimental scales. The adsorption behavior of two pharmaceuticals was investigated as a function of experimental scale and …
Low-Cost Uav Swarm For Real-Time Object Detection Applications, Joel Valdovinos Miranda
Low-Cost Uav Swarm For Real-Time Object Detection Applications, Joel Valdovinos Miranda
Master's Theses
With unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, becoming readily available and affordable, applications for these devices have grown immensely. One type of application is the use of drones to fly over large areas and detect desired entities. For example, a swarm of drones could detect marine creatures near the surface of the ocean and provide users the location and type of animal found. However, even with the reduction in cost of drone technology, such applications result costly due to the use of custom hardware with built-in advanced capabilities. Therefore, the focus of this thesis is to compile an …
Model-Based Design Of An Optimal Lqg Regulator For A Piezoelectric Actuated Smart Structure Using A High-Precision Laser Interferometry Measurement System, Grant P. Gallagher
Model-Based Design Of An Optimal Lqg Regulator For A Piezoelectric Actuated Smart Structure Using A High-Precision Laser Interferometry Measurement System, Grant P. Gallagher
Master's Theses
Smart structure control systems commonly use piezoceramic sensors or accelerometers as vibration measurement devices. These measurement devices often produce noisy and/or low-precision signals, which makes it difficult to measure small-amplitude vibrations. Laser interferometry devices pose as an alternative high-precision position measurement method, capable of nanometer-scale resolution. The aim of this research is to utilize a model-based design approach to develop and implement a real-time Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) regulator for a piezoelectric actuated smart structure using a high-precision laser interferometry measurement system to suppress the excitation of vibratory modes.
The analytical model of the smart structure is derived using the …
Does Suffering Really Predominate In Wild Ecosystems?, Elliot Buss
Does Suffering Really Predominate In Wild Ecosystems?, Elliot Buss
Between the Species
In recent discussions of the moral value of wild ecosystems it has been claimed that wild ecosystems contain more suffering than positive wellbeing, and therefore that wild ecosystems are overall morally bad for animals. This papers critically assesses this argument. Despite its popularity, I find that this argument is defective, as it rests on unexamined empirical assumptions about the quality of certain animals’ lives. Moreover, I argue that even if we grant these assumptions, the conclusion does not follow unless we make further controversial assumptions about how moral claims are aggregated across different animals. As a result, there is no …
Animal-Rights Primitivism: A Vital Needs Argument Against Modern Technology, James Robert Schultz
Animal-Rights Primitivism: A Vital Needs Argument Against Modern Technology, James Robert Schultz
Between the Species
In this essay, I argue that those who embrace animal rights should also embrace primitivism—the view that humans should abandon modern technology and take up something like hunter-gatherer technology instead. I call my view “animal-rights primitivism” to distinguish it from human-centered arguments for primitivism. In particular, I employ a vital-needs framework to make my argument. I argue that hunter-gatherer technology is the least harmful kind of technology, it is sufficient to meet human vital needs, and it is possible for humans to make the transition to hunter-gatherer technology while still meeting their vital needs. Alternatively, I argue that even if …

Has The Philosophical Case For Animal Liberation Been Proved? A Systematic And Narrative Review Of The Philosophical Literature 1975-2020., Michael Morris
Between the Species
I test the hypothesis proposed by Peter Singer that the philosophical case for animal liberation has been won, through a systematic review of papers published by philosophers between 1975 and 2020.
There was a slight but statistically significant correlation between support for an animal liberation vegan position, with year of publication. Support for a better treatment of animals than currently sanctioned by society increased significantly among papers discussing general principals of animal ethics.
Findings support a weaker version of Singer's hypothesis. Among the philosophical community there is greater support for animal liberation, but the debate has not been ‘won’.
Sharing Walks As A Witnessing Practice: Exploring Movement-Based Pedagogies, Catalina Hernandez-Cabal
Sharing Walks As A Witnessing Practice: Exploring Movement-Based Pedagogies, Catalina Hernandez-Cabal
Feminist Pedagogy
How we walk—or our inability to do so—is telling of who we have been. I propose this simple movement practice as a pedagogical engagement with the concept of faithful witnessing, which refers to attending to modes of power unbalance that might go unnoticed, and to people's creative and resistant possibilities (Lugones, 2003; Figueroa-Vásquez, 2015). This activity is suggested to provoke reflections about how we understand and experience social difference and power unbalances. The work introduces a simple score (a creative prompt) to explore walking-with others, creating instructions to teach others our movement, learning others', and delving into conversations concerning the …
What It’S Like, Or Not Like, To Bee, Cheryl E. Abbate
What It’S Like, Or Not Like, To Bee, Cheryl E. Abbate
Between the Species
In his recent work, David DeGrazia (2020) explores the possibility of insect sentience, focusing on bees as a case study. He advances a novel evolutionary approach, arguing that, from an evolutionary perspective, it’s more likely that bees are sentient than insentient., insofar as bees (allegedly) would have a selective advantage if they are motivated—in the form of feeling—to achieve their aims. His argument assumes two questionable claims: (1) if X is a selective advantage for an organism, then the organism likely has X, and (2) conscious creatures would have a selective advantage if they are sentient. I challenge both claims, …

Fate Of Listeria Monocytogenes On Two Salad Blends At Ideal And Abusive Temperatures, Taran Virdi
Fate Of Listeria Monocytogenes On Two Salad Blends At Ideal And Abusive Temperatures, Taran Virdi
Master's Theses
The consumption of ready-to-eat (RTE) foods has increased with popular RTE salad blends including non-traditional ingredients such as shredded Brussels sprouts, kale, red and green cabbage, chicory, and broccoli stalk. Concurrently, there has been an increase in the number of foodborne illnesses and outbreaks associated with leafy greens. The potential risk associated with these ingredients must be addressed as they have not typically been consumed raw, especially since L. monocytogenes continues to be a leading cause of foodborne illnesses and outbreaks. This study evaluated the survival of L. monocytogenes on two RTE salad blends at refrigeration, mildly abusive, and abusive …
