Use Of Rostral Characters For Identifying Adult Billfishes (Teleostei: Perciformes: Istiophoridae And Xiphiidae), Harry L. Fierstine, Nicole L. Voigt

Seven species of the family Istiophoridae and Xiphias gladiu6 were identified using only features of their rostrum. In the Istiophoridae, two rostral regions were emphasized, one-fourth and one·half the distance between the distal tip and the orbital margin of the lateral ethmoid bone. Characters studied in each region were the depth and width of rostrum and height, width, and position of nutrient canals (as seen in cross-section). Characters studied without reference to region were the distribution of denticles on both dorsal and ventral surfaces of the bilI and position of the prenasal bone. Nutrition influences age at puberty, duration of postpartum anestrus, and ovulation rate. Mechanisms mediating these effects, however, have not as yet been fully elucidated. Shifts in feed intake are accompanied by changes in circulating levels of insulin-like growth factor-I (lGF-I), and somatotropin (ST). Feed restriction increases ST, decreases IGF-l, and shifts the proportions of IGF binding proteins (IGFBP). Active immunization against growth hormone releasing factor (GRFi) has been used to examine the effects of alterations in the somatotropic axis, independent of feed intake, on reproduction in prepubertal gilts and heifers.
