Avoiding The Golden Fleece: Licensing Agreements For Archives, Nancy E. Loe
Avoiding The Golden Fleece: Licensing Agreements For Archives, Nancy E. Loe
Library Scholarship
The need to negotiate licenses protecting the rights to intellectual property in archives is an emerging and complex area. This article provides archivists with a better understanding of the legal and economic issues arising from commercial requests for archival materials, examining five key areas relating to licensing: the technology, the players, the economics, the rights and the consequences. The article presents guidelines, strategies, and a sample licensing agreement to help archivists make informed decisions about whether and on what terms to license materials from their collections for commercial use.

Neh Grant Proposal: Arrangement And Description Of The Julia Morgan Architectural Archives, Nancy E. Loe
Library Scholarship
This proposal describes the significance and depth of scholarship afforded by Special Collections Department of the Robert E. Kennedy Library, California Polytechnic State University, (Cal Poly), San Luis Obispo, the nation’s largest and most comprehensive Morgan archive, and the urgent need to arrange, preserve, and make the collections fully accessible to researchers.
Consumer Knowledge And Acceptance Of Agricultural Biotechnology Vary, Jennifer S. James
Consumer Knowledge And Acceptance Of Agricultural Biotechnology Vary, Jennifer S. James
Agribusiness
Results from consumer surveys reveal some basic conclusions about consumer attitudes toward agricultural biotechnology. First, consumers do not agree about whether biotech foods are good or bad. Second, a small group of people strongly opposes them. Third, the majority of consumers are uninformed about the technology and how food is produced. Relatively small but vocal anti-biotechnology activist groups are successful at influencing public opinion because of consumers’ lack of knowledge, creating a role for universities and government agencies to provide clear, objective and accessible information.

Magnetosome Formation In Prokaryotes, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Richard B. Frankel
Physics
Magnetotactic bacteria were discovered almost 30 years ago, and for many years and many different reasons, the number of researchers working in this field was few and progress was slow. Recently, however, thanks to the isolation of new strains and the development of new techniques for manipulating these strains, researchers from several laboratories have made significant progress in elucidating the molecular, biochemical, chemical and genetic bases of magnetosome formation and understanding how these unique intracellular organelles function. We focus here on this progress.

In Situ Cardiac Performance Of Pacific Bluefin Tuna Hearts In Response To Acute Temperature Change, Jason M. Blank, Jeffery M. Morrissette, Ana M. Landeira-Fernandez, Susanna B. Blackwell, Thomas D. Williams, Barbara A. Block
Biological Sciences
This study reports the cardiovascular physiology of the Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) in an in situ heart preparation. The performance of the Pacific bluefin tuna heart was examined at temperatures from 30°C down to 2°C. Heart rates ranged from 156 beats min–1 at 30°C to 13 beats min–1 at 2°C. Maximal stroke volumes were 1.1 ml kg–1 at 25°C and 1.3 ml kg–1 at 2°C. Maximal cardiac outputs were 18.1 ml kg–1 min–1 at 2°C and 106 ml kg–1 min–1 at 25°C. These data indicate that cardiovascular function in …
