Use Of Family Care Indicators And Their Relationship With Child Development In Bangladesh, Jena D. Hamadani, Fahmida Tofail, Afroza Hilaly, Syed N. Huda, Patrice L. Engle, Sally M. Grantham-Mcgregor
Psychology and Child Development
Poor stimulation in the home is one of the main factors affecting the development of children living in poverty. The family care indicators (FCIs) were developed to measure home stimulation in large populations and were derived from the Home Observations for Measurement of the Environment (HOME). The FCIs were piloted with 801 rural Bangladeshi mothers of children aged 18 months. Five subscales were created: ‘play activities’ (PA), ‘varieties of play materials’ (VP), ‘sources of play materials’, ‘household books’, and ‘magazines and newspapers’ (MN). All subscales had acceptable short-term reliability. Mental and motor development of the children was assessed on the …
The Presence Of Micropterus Salmoides (Largemouth Bass) Influences The Populations Of Rana Draytonii (California Red-Legged Frog) And Pseudacris Regilla (Pacific Treefrog) In Two Ponds In Santa Barbara County, California, Kenneth Lee Gilliland
Master's Theses
Alien fish have been implicated in the decline of Rana draytonii (California red-legged frog) and Pseudacris regilla (Pacific treefrog) populations. Micropterus salmoides (largemouth bass) is a common sport fish that has been introduced into the sympatric range of these two anuran species; however, no studies have investigated the individual influence that this alien fish has on these two species. I conducted M. salmoides control or eradication experiments during a four year study in two ponds within the Transverse Mountain Range of Santa Barbara County, California. Changes in the densities of all life stages of R. draytonii and P. regilla were …
An Investigation Of Humeral Stress Fractures In Racing Thoroughbreds Using A 3d Finite Element Model In Conjunction With A Bone Remodeling Algorithm, Ryan James Moore
An Investigation Of Humeral Stress Fractures In Racing Thoroughbreds Using A 3d Finite Element Model In Conjunction With A Bone Remodeling Algorithm, Ryan James Moore
Master's Theses
The humerus of a racing horse Thoroughbred is highly susceptible to stress fractures at a characteristic location as a result of cyclic loading. The propensity of a Thoroughbred to exhibit humeral fracture has made equines useful models in the epidemiology of stress fractures. In this study, a racing Thoroughbred humerus was simulated during training using a 3D finite element model in conjunction with a bone remodeling algorithm. Nine muscle forces and two contact forces were applied to the 3-dimensional finite element model, which contains four separate load cases representing fore-stance, mid-stance, aft-stance, and standing. Four different training programs were incorporated …

Integrated Measurements Of Acoustical And Optical Thin Layers I: Vertical Scales Of Association, Kelly J. Benoit-Bird, Mark A. Moline, Chad M. Waluk, Ian C. Robbins
Biological Sciences
This study combined measurements from multiple platforms with acoustic instruments on moorings and on a ship and optics on a profiler and an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) to examine the relationships between fluorescent, bioluminescent, and acoustically scattering layers in Monterey Bay during nighttime hours in July and August of 2006 and May of 2008. We identified thin bioluminescent layers that were strongly correlated with acoustic scattering at the same depth but were part of vertically broad acoustic features, suggesting layers of unique composition inside larger biomass features. These compositional thin layers nested inside larger biomass features may be a common …

A Seed Infecting Fungus (Tilletia Ehrhartae) Could Provide A Partial Biological Control Mechanism For Invasive Veldt Grass (Ehrharta Calycina), Briana Overman, Fritz Light, Francis Villablanca
A Seed Infecting Fungus (Tilletia Ehrhartae) Could Provide A Partial Biological Control Mechanism For Invasive Veldt Grass (Ehrharta Calycina), Briana Overman, Fritz Light, Francis Villablanca
STAR Program Research Presentations
Invasive species can disrupt or alter the natural ecosystem function, composition, and diversity of an area. Veldt grass, (Ehrharta calycina), is an exotic species causing plant diversity in areas to decline. The hypothesis tested was that the Veldt grass individuals would show a response to a host-specific pathogen, Tilletia ehrhartae. This study was conducted at two locations Los Osos and Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge (GNDNWR) in California. We established four quadrats in Los Osos and six within GNDNWR using the nearest- neighbor method to collect infected/uninfected individuals of Veldt grass. All results were analyzed with t-tests and chi-squared statistics. …
Settlement In Fouling Communities Of San Fransisco Bay, Jacqueline Hill, Sarah Cohen
Settlement In Fouling Communities Of San Fransisco Bay, Jacqueline Hill, Sarah Cohen
STAR Program Research Presentations
Settlement among native and invasive marine organisms in fouling communities was observed at various time intervals in the San Francisco Bay. Many of these well-known, globally invasive organisms grow rapidly and often outcompete or overgrow natives. Settlement plates were placed at three different protected areas within the Bay (Richmond Marina Bay Yacht Club (1), Berkeley Marina (2), and Fort Baker (3)) and scored once a week for 5 weeks. The two larger East Bay sites (1 and 2) showed considerably greater species diversity and abundance in comparison to the smaller site near the mouth of the Bay (site 3). Furthermore, …

Yersinia Pestis Proteomics And Vaccine Development, Rebecca Paddack, Lindsey Evans, Jr-Shiuan Lin, Stephen Smiley, Brett Chromy
STAR Program Research Presentations
Pneumonic plague, caused by the gram-negative bacteria Yersinia pestis, has led to millions of human causalities during several major pandemics and has the potential to be employed as a deadly biological warfare agent. For this reason, it is vital that an effective vaccine against Y. pestis be created. Currently, a subunit vaccine exists which works by stimulating B-cells (humoral immunity), but it has failed to protect primates in aerosolized bacterial challenges. In an effort to complement the existing vaccine, an alternative vaccine strategy can use both B-cell stimulation and the targeting of T cells (cell-mediated immunity) with an antigenic peptide …

The quarter starts of with a series of intense short workshops that used …
Obtaining The C-27 California Landscape Contractors License, Nick Logan
Obtaining The C-27 California Landscape Contractors License, Nick Logan
Horticulture and Crop Science
The purpose of this project was to obtain the C-27 contractors license in California while still continuing education at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, prior to graduation. Experience and verification of experience is extremely important in the process of obtaining the C-27. Without sufficient experience in landscape contracting, attempting to obtain the license is futile. Some people have the experience needed and this project is aimed at helping those people realize they can take advantage of their knowledge and become licensed. Even if those eligible are not prepared to own and operate a landscaping business, having the license can be …

Animal Science
To evaluate the impact of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) on carcass cutability and tenderness of calf-fed Holstein steers, calf-fed Holstein carcasses (n = 102) were selected from a pool of 2,300 steers that were fed 0 or 8.3 mg/kg (DM basis) of ZH. Zilpaterol hydrochloride was supplemented the last 20 d of the finishing period and withdrawn for 3 d before slaughter. Carcasses were selected based on carcass weight as well as predetermined USDA Yield grade categories. For tenderness evaluation, steaks from the strip loin, bottom round, and top round (n = 54 per subprimal) were aged for 14 or 21 …

ABSTRACT: Two studies using beef and calf-fed Holstein cattle were conducted to determine the effect of zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH) supplementation on the color of strip loin steaks packaged in traditional and modified-atmosphere packaging. Select (USDA) strip loins were obtained from the carcasses of beef (n = 118) or calf-fed Holstein (n = 132) cattle fed ZH (6.8 g/ton on a 90% DM basis) for the last 0, 20, 30, or 40 d of feeding. One portion of the strip loin was moisture enhanced, cut into steaks, and packaged in an atmosphere containing 80% oxygen and 20% carbon dioxide. The remaining …
Pre-Earthquake Signatures In Thermal Infrared And Radar Data, Stephanie Oliver, Shamma Alqassim, Steve Roth, Vern Vanderbilt
Pre-Earthquake Signatures In Thermal Infrared And Radar Data, Stephanie Oliver, Shamma Alqassim, Steve Roth, Vern Vanderbilt
STAR Program Research Presentations
Preceding major earthquakes (magnitude 5.0 and greater), changes in the Earth's Thermal Infrared (TIR) emission, radar reflectivity, human/animal behavior, magnetic field pulsations, electric fields, ground and spring water chemistry, and electron densities in the ionosphere have been observed and, consequently, are now being monitored more closely. Changes in both TIR emission and radar reflectivity are remotely detectable. We are testing the hypothesis that there is a unique pre-earthquake signal in MODIS TIR satellite data by comparing MODIS TIR data collected just before a major earthquake to MODIS TIR data collected during periods of little seismic activity, thereby allowing this EQP …
Discerning Differences Among Producer Groups And Organic Adoption Barriers In Texas, Michael Lau, Roger Hanagriff, Douglass Constance, Mary York, Brian Vandelist, Lindsey M. Higgins
Discerning Differences Among Producer Groups And Organic Adoption Barriers In Texas, Michael Lau, Roger Hanagriff, Douglass Constance, Mary York, Brian Vandelist, Lindsey M. Higgins
Agribusiness
While nationwide growth in the production of organic agricultural products has seen rapid expansion, the number of certified organic operations in Texas has remained relatively stagnant. Evidence shows a shift in consumer’s demands toward organic products, yet Texas producers have been comparatively slow to respond to this shift. A survey was distributed to a random sample of 4,006 Texas producers as a means of understanding the perceived barriers of adoption of organic production practices in Texas,. Emphasis was placed on perceived production and market barriers to organic production and differences in perceived barriers among producer groups. The results provide guidance …
Moral Agency In Mammalia, Mark D. Reid
Moral Agency In Mammalia, Mark D. Reid
Between the Species
About the extent of moral agency in the animal kingdom, one view is that only humans are moral agents. Holding a different view, I argue that moral agency depends on the capacity for other-regard and the capacity to be attuned to significance—such that things matter to one. I derive a criterion where a creature is a moral agent if she performs an action that promotes others’ significant interests and brings great costs to herself where she is aware of these significant interests and imposed costs. Failure to confirm that she has this awareness is a weakness of examples of moral …
Animals In The Kingdom Of Ends, Heather M. Kendrick
Animals In The Kingdom Of Ends, Heather M. Kendrick
Between the Species
Kant claimed that human beings have no duties to animals because they are not autonomous ends in themselves. I argue that Kant was wrong to exclude animals from the realm of moral consideration. Animals, although they do not set their own ends and thus cannot be regarded as ends in themselves, do have ends that are given to them by nature. As beings with ends, they stand between mere things that have no ends, and rational beings that are ends in themselves. I propose a broader version of Kant's kingdom of ends, in which rational beings respect the ends of …
