The Effect Of Calcified Plaque On Stress Within A Fibrous Thin Cap Atheroma In An Atherosclerotic Coronary Artery Using Finite Element Analysis (Fea), Ellerie Nagy Sep 2010

The Effect Of Calcified Plaque On Stress Within A Fibrous Thin Cap Atheroma In An Atherosclerotic Coronary Artery Using Finite Element Analysis (Fea), Ellerie Nagy

Master's Theses

Atherosclerosis causes hundreds of thousands of deaths in the US alone every year. Fibrous cap rupture is one of the leading causes of these fatalities. Thin cap atheromas are commonly regarded as vulnerable plaque, however the effect of calcium upon a thin fibrous cap with lipid pool is poorly understood. Some studies have shown that calcium adds to stability of the lesion, while others have proven otherwise. An article by Li et al. 2007 suggests location is the key factor. By varying the percentage of calcium and lipid within a defined region, the stress on the cap was estimated using …

Dietary Protein Intake, Body Composition And Self-Reported Physical Functioning In U.S. Adults, Kerri Beth Parker Sep 2010

Dietary Protein Intake, Body Composition And Self-Reported Physical Functioning In U.S. Adults, Kerri Beth Parker

Master's Theses

Sarcopenia is a growing health problem in this country as more Americans are living well into old age. It has been thought that a higher protein intake may be related to greater lean muscle mass as well as greater muscular strength and physical functioning. The purpose of this research was to examine protein intake and its relationship to lean body mass and physical functioning in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults.

This research used cross-sectional data from the NHANES 2003-2004 to examine the relationship between protein intake, as an average from two 24h recalls, and dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) …

Flores, Michael E. Stender, Kevin M. Stewart, Lauren M. Nelson, Albert C. Chen, Koichi Masuda, Scott J. Hazelwood, Stephen M. Klisch, Robert L. Sah

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanisms of articular cartilage growth and maturation have been elucidated by studying composition-function dynamics during in vivo development and in vitro culture with stimuli such as insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1). This study tested the hypothesis that IGF-1 and TGF-β1 regulate immature cartilage compressive moduli and Poisson’s ratios in a manner consistent with known effects on tensile properties. Bovine calf articular cartilage from superficial-articular (S) and middle-growth (M) regions were analyzed fresh or following culture in medium with IGF-1 or TGF-β1. Mechanical properties in confined (CC) and unconfined (UCC) compression, cartilage matrix composition, and explant …

State Space Model Of A Light Weight Flexible Telescope, Chi-Yeh Hsu Sep 2010

State Space Model Of A Light Weight Flexible Telescope, Chi-Yeh Hsu

Master's Theses

The accuracy of optical telescope in the past was dominated by the construction of the telescope body and the precision of optical surface. This thesis fits into a larger project with a goal of controlling a flexible telescope in order to help a cheaper telescope achieve higher accuracy. In order to understand the internal motion of telescope, the goal of this thesis is to build a state space model of a two-degree-of-freedom telescope using a known star location as feedback. The model presented in this thesis may be used for the telescope simulation and the control design in the future. …

Multi-Frequency Processing For Lumen Enhancement With Wideband Intravascular Ultrasound, Rory A. Carrillo Sep 2010

Multi-Frequency Processing For Lumen Enhancement With Wideband Intravascular Ultrasound, Rory A. Carrillo

Master's Theses

The application of high frequency ultrasound is the key to higher resolution intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) images. The need to further improve the IVUS spatial resolution may drive the transducer center frequency even higher than the current 40 MHz range. However, increasing the center frequency may be challenging as it leads to stronger scattering echoes from blood. The high level of blood scattering echoes may obscure the arterial lumen and make image interpretation difficult. Blood backscatter levels increase with transmission center frequency at a much greater rate compared to arterial tissue. These different frequency dependencies provide a potential method to distinguish …

A Born Killer?, Leah Johnson Aug 2010

A Born Killer?, Leah Johnson

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

When constructing an argument the author must consider how he or she will use ethos, pathos, and logos to appeal to an audience. In her essay, “A Born Killer?” author Leah Johnson opens with an image of her small puppy and a caption asking, “Does she look dangerous to you?” Does this image, coupled with her introduction, successfully grab the reader’s attention? Which of the three appeals is Johnson employing in this opening? Johnson also uses images in her argument. What is the effect? If the image were not included, how would this change your reading of the introduction? How …

Overfishing: A Global Perspective, Viet H. Nguyen Aug 2010

Overfishing: A Global Perspective, Viet H. Nguyen

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

In “Overfishing: A Global Perspective,” Viet H. Nguyen addresses a pertinent topic that isn’t necessarily at the forefront of American’s concerns despite its significance. What is a food crisis? In informing readers of the factors contributing to this predicament, Nguyen cites a wide variety of sources. Are they clearly introduced and fully explicated? What aspects or elements would you change in order to maximize the information brought in from outside texts? How would you do this? Are there any sources you would eliminate or change?

Because such a large number of outside sources were consulted for this essay, the author …

Invasion Of The Zombie Chickens, Jesse Tyler Aug 2010

Invasion Of The Zombie Chickens, Jesse Tyler

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

Taking a creative approach to an important issue, Jesse Tyler juggles fact-driven research and personal voice to form a unique argument in “Invasion of the Zombie Chickens.” From the beginning of his essay, Tyler draws in his reader with an articulate description not usually associated with research-based essays. Yet Tyler’s introduction is not merely an amusing “hook”; instead, it is grounded with a strong, arguable thesis, paving the way for the rest of his essay. Tyler’s balance of humor and thorough research provides an entertaining background through which to explore the issue of “spent hens” in Petaluma. Not relying on …

Bonsai: A Way Of Living, Amy Nguyen Aug 2010

Bonsai: A Way Of Living, Amy Nguyen

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

Amy Nguyen’s profile “Bonsai: A Way of Living” blends form and content effectively; the tone of the piece is as calming as the subject matter. She achieves this effect by using stylistic techniques: imagery, diction, and even punctuation. For example, notice how the words “harmony,” “flow,” and “energy” precede the image of Nguyen’s father meditating. She later describes her father bending down to work with the Bonsai. She writes, “his stance is like a person playing pool, the same facial expression . . .” Instead of merely stating that her father concentrates on his Bonsai, she uses a simile to show …

Success Of A Gardener, Vanessa Saldana Aug 2010

Success Of A Gardener, Vanessa Saldana

Fresh Voices: Composition at Cal Poly

Vanessa Saldana, in her essay “Success of a Gardener,” contributes her perspective on illegal immigration through an intimate portrait of an illegal immigrant: her father. Although she knows her father well, she seems to take this opportunity to explore an aspect of him she perhaps hasn’t considered in all its complexity. As you can see, Saldana remains fairly objective through the essay, but her in-depth analysis reveals that she learned something about her father—and herself—that she hadn’t realized before taking on the assignment. What is your opinion about immigration? How does Saldana’s essay contribute to the current immigration debate?

Evaluating Effectiveness Of Best Management Practices To Control Accelerated Sedimentation Of The Morro Bay Estuary, Misgana K. Muleta Aug 2010

Evaluating Effectiveness Of Best Management Practices To Control Accelerated Sedimentation Of The Morro Bay Estuary, Misgana K. Muleta

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Morro Bay estuary, located on the central Coast of California approximately half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco, is one of the most important wetlands on the west Coast as it supports wide variety of habitats including numerous sensitive and endangered plant and animal species. Various studies have identified accelerated erosion and subsequent sedimentation as a major threat for sustainability of the bay. Watershed disturbances caused by agricultural activities are believed to be one of the major causes of the accelerated erosion and sedimentation. More than 200 conservation practices have been installed in the watershed since the mid-1990 …

Notonecta Exhibit Threat-Sensitive, Predator-Induced Dispersal, Shannon J. Mccauley, Locke Rowe Aug 2010

Notonecta Exhibit Threat-Sensitive, Predator-Induced Dispersal, Shannon J. Mccauley, Locke Rowe

Biological Sciences

Dispersal is a central process determining community structure in heterogeneous landscapes, and species interactions within habitats may be a major determinant of dispersal. Although the effects of species interactions on dispersal within habitats have been well studied, how species interactions affect the movement of individuals between habitats in a landscape has received less attention. We conducted two experiments to assess the extent to which predation risk affects dispersal from an aquatic habitat by a flight-capable semi-aquatic insect (Notonecta undulata). Exposure to non-lethal (caged) fish fed conspecifics increased dispersal rates in N. undulata. Moreover, dispersal rate was positively correlated with the …

Intelligent Software For Ecological Building Design, Jens G. Pohl, Hisham Assal, Kym J. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

Building design is a complex process because of the number of elements and issues involved and the number of relationships that exist among them. Adding sustainability issues to the list increases the complexity of design by an order of magnitude. There is a need for computer assistance to manage the increased complexity of design and to provide intelligent collaboration in formulating acceptable design solutions. Software development technology today offers opportunities to design and build an intelligent software system environment that can serve as a reliable intelligent partner to the human designer.

In this paper the authors discuss the requirements for …

Solving The Data Deluge Problem, Jens G. Pohl Aug 2010

Solving The Data Deluge Problem, Jens G. Pohl

Collaborative Agent Design (CAD) Research Center

The paper postulates that the information technology revolution that is commonly referred to as the Information Age is currently in a transition stage between data-processing and knowledge management that should be more aptly referred to as the Data Age. Symptoms of this transition stage are a data deluge problem that is evidenced by the inability of human computer-users to effectively analyze and draw useful conclusions from the overwhelming volume of data that is being collected, the increasing complexity of networked systems, and the acknowledged vulnerability of virtually all existing digital systems to cyber security threats.

The author suggests that the …

Sierra Nevada Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes Necator): A Conservation Assessment, John D. Perrine, Lori A. Campbell, Gregory A. Green Aug 2010

Sierra Nevada Red Fox (Vulpes Vulpes Necator): A Conservation Assessment, John D. Perrine, Lori A. Campbell, Gregory A. Green

Biological Sciences

One goal of the Sierra Nevada Forest Plan Amendment (SNFPA) 2001 and 2004 Records of Decision was to protect and recover native Sierra Nevada red fox (Vulpes vulpes necator) populations in the Sierra Nevada (USDA Forest Service 2001 p. 14). To accomplish this goal, the ROD commits the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service to completing a conservation assessment for the Sierra Nevada red fox in cooperation with other federal, state, and local agencies, as well as Tribal governments. This conservation assessment synthesizes the best available scientific information and thought concerning habitat relationships, population status and trends, historical and …

Turning Crocodilian Hearts Into Bird Hearts: Growth Rates Are Similar For Alligators With And Without Right-To-Left Cardiac Shunt, John Eme, June Gwalthney, Tomasz Owerkowicz, Jason M. Blank, James W. Hicks Aug 2010

Turning Crocodilian Hearts Into Bird Hearts: Growth Rates Are Similar For Alligators With And Without Right-To-Left Cardiac Shunt, John Eme, June Gwalthney, Tomasz Owerkowicz, Jason M. Blank, James W. Hicks

Biological Sciences

The functional and possible adaptive significance of non-avian reptiles’ dual aortic arch system and the ability of all non-avian reptiles to perform central vascular cardiac shunts have been of great interest to comparative physiologists. The unique cardiac anatomy of crocodilians – a four-chambered heart with the dual aortic arch system – allows for only right-to-left (R–L; pulmonary bypass) cardiac shunt and for surgical elimination of this shunt. Surgical removal of the R–L shunt, by occluding the left aorta (LAo) upstream and downstream of the foramen of Panizza, results in a crocodilian with an obligatory, avian/mammalian central circulation. In this study, …

The Impact Of Antioxidant Addition On Flavor Of Cheddar And Mozzarella Whey And Cheddar Whey Protein Concentrate, I. W. Liaw, H. Eshpari, P. S. Tong, M. A. Drake

Dairy Science

Lipid oxidation products are primary contributors to whey ingredient off-flavors. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the impact of antioxidant addition in prevention of flavor deterioration of fluid whey and spray-dried whey protein. Cheddar and Mozzarella cheeses were manufactured in triplicate. Fresh whey was collected, pasteurized, and defatted by centrifugal separation. Subsequently, 0.05% (w/w) ascorbic acid or 0.5% (w/w) whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) were added to the pasteurized whey. A control with no antioxidant addition was also evaluated. Wheys were stored at 3 °C and evaluated after 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 d. In a subsequent experiment, …

Picasso Interface For Horizon Simulation Framework, Brian E. Kirkpatrick Aug 2010

Picasso Interface For Horizon Simulation Framework, Brian E. Kirkpatrick

Master's Theses

The Horizon Simulation Framework, or HSF, is a modeling and simulation framework compiled from C/C++ source code into a command line program. Picasso is an interface designed to control the input files to Horizon by providing visual tools to create and manipulate the XML files used to define an HSF system of assets, their environment, and other simulation parameters. Picasso also supports the visualization of Horizon output in several different forms, and import mechanics from online space object catalogues.
