Acquired Traits Revisited, William D. Stansfield Feb 2011

Acquired Traits Revisited, William D. Stansfield

Biological Sciences

Most biology texts villify Lamarck's concept of “inheritance of acquired characters” and leave the impression that all acquired characters are never transmitted to offspring. However, recent research indicates that this is not true! Some “acquired” traits are inherited. I profile some of these striking cases and their importance for evolution and for understanding a broader epigenetic context for heredity and ontogeny (the emerging field of “evo-devo”). Further, I discuss how such cases, even considered as exceptions, contribute to understanding the nature of science, both the role of general rules in biology and the occurrence of conceptual change, or paradigm shifts.

The Testing And Future Developments Of A Nerve Stimulation Device For The Treatment Of Migraines, Alyssa Erin Hopkins Feb 2011

The Testing And Future Developments Of A Nerve Stimulation Device For The Treatment Of Migraines, Alyssa Erin Hopkins

Master's Theses

The development of neural stimulations devices may help treat many patients who suffer from migraines and chronic headaches via an electrical stimulation to the patient’s nerve. The electrical stimulation will mask the pain associated with these diseases. The system is subcutaneously implanted into the back of the neck and recharged via inductive coupling. Discussed is the transmission of signals in nerve fibers and the testing involved with neural stimulation implantable devices. Research was performed for preliminary testing on the charging rates, tests to analyze the heat dissipated during recharging, ergonomic factors to be considered, developing a model to simulate an …

A Microsimulation Of Traffic, Parking, And Emissions At California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo, Steven Michael Kilbert Feb 2011

A Microsimulation Of Traffic, Parking, And Emissions At California Polytechnic State University – San Luis Obispo, Steven Michael Kilbert

Master's Theses

Traffic and parking congestion are significant issues at many universities nationwide. The delays experienced result in wasted time, money, and fuel for students, faculty and staff, not to mention the negative contributions to the environment. This paper quantifies the amount of vehicle emissions generated during an average morning peak hour in the university environment. Using VISSIM and CMEM microsimulation packages, a model is created for California Polytechnic State University- San Luis Obispo to aggregate the collective transportation behaviors and practices of the campus and recognize the implications these behaviors pose on the transportation network as a whole. Reasonable estimates are …

The Effect Of Cox-2 Specific Inhibition On Direct Fracture Healing In The Rabbit Tibia, David J. Hak, Kurt S. Schulz, Behrang Khoie, Scott J. Hazelwood Jan 2011

The Effect Of Cox-2 Specific Inhibition On Direct Fracture Healing In The Rabbit Tibia, David J. Hak, Kurt S. Schulz, Behrang Khoie, Scott J. Hazelwood

Biomedical Engineering

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Cox-2 administration on direct (primary) fracture healing.

Methods: A transverse tibial osteotomy was created in adult male rabbits and rigidly fixed in compression using a 2.7-mm dynamic compression plate. Animals were randomized to receive either rofecoxib (12.5 mg orally per day) or placebo. Animals were killed at 4 weeks and fracture healing assessed by mechanical testing.

Results: There were no significant differences between the control and Cox-2 treated animals in terms of mechanical strength at 4 weeks. There was a high complication rate of peri-implant fractures …

Caffeine Metabolism And Cytochrome P450 Enzyme Mrna Expression Levels Of Genetically Diverse Inbred Mouse Strains, Neal Addicott, Michael Malfatti, Gabriela G. Loots Jan 2011

Caffeine Metabolism And Cytochrome P450 Enzyme Mrna Expression Levels Of Genetically Diverse Inbred Mouse Strains, Neal Addicott, Michael Malfatti, Gabriela G. Loots

STAR Program Research Presentations

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes activate or eliminate medications and other xenobiotics, and Caffeine has been used as an indicator of activity for some CYPs. The natural genetic variation in the human population for caffeine metabolizing CYPs does not yet have an established animal model for comparison, but the natural variation in inbred mouse strains presents an attractive starting point. The project gave four different strains of mice a 40mg/kg dose of caffeine and sampled blood and liver tissue after 30 minutes. Samples were analyzed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), reverse transcription PCR (rtPCR), and quantitative PCR (qPCR). The DBA/2J …

Contrasting Effects Of Flow On Adult And Juvenile Ascidian Life History Stages, Including The Global Invasive Didemnum Vexillum, Tren C. Kauzer, C Sarah Cohen Jan 2011

Contrasting Effects Of Flow On Adult And Juvenile Ascidian Life History Stages, Including The Global Invasive Didemnum Vexillum, Tren C. Kauzer, C Sarah Cohen

STAR Program Research Presentations

Few studies have quantified a relationship between recruitment, growth, survival and flow with colonial filter feeders. In this study, the growth of D. vex and larval recruitment were evaluated under different local flow conditions in Half Moon Bay, California, USA. Tunicates were subjected to four different flow conditions, three of which included objects to differentially obstruct flow, and growth and recruitment were measured. A direct relationship was seen between increases in flow and adult growth, and an inverse relationship was seen between increases in flow and recruitment. These trends suggest that optimal flow conditions differ for juveniles and adults. The …

The Architecture Of California Polytechnic State University 1980-2010, Facilities Planning And Capital Projects, California Polytechnic State University - San Luis Obispo

Publications

The book is dedicated to the presidency of Dr. Warren J. Baker at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, California. President Baker’s leadership and vision over the past three decades has placed Cal Poly as one the premier undergraduate universities in the country. The following pages will demonstrate how this vision enabled state–of-the-art buildings to support the high level of education provided by the faculty of this university. He promoted an infrastructure and physical campus where students can live and learn. He envisioned the need for sustainability long before it was implemented as a building requirement. Because of …
