Modeling Erosion And Sedimentation Processes In The Chorro Creek Subwatershed To Evaluate And Develop Effective Watershed Management Approaches, Michael Randall, Misgana K. Muleta
Civil and Environmental Engineering
The Morro Bay Watershed, located in San Luis Obispo County, California, covers more than 48,000 acres of land and discharges into Morro Bay through the Morro Bay National Estuary (MBNE). The Chorro Creek Subwatershed consists of approximately 30,000 acres of the overall watershed. The MBNE provides an ecosystem that supports a variety of wildlife, from the common sea gull to the endangered sea otter. The estuary is also home to over 200 species of birds. The operational waterfront of the Morro Bay Harbor was and continues to be a strong supporter to the local economy of the City of Morro …

Brizzolara Creek Revegetation & Restoration Plan, Cailin O'Meara
Earth and Soil Sciences
In 2009, a portion of the Cal Poly Farm Shop was removed to create a stream bank supported by rip-rap facing for Brizzolara Creek. However, weed eradication and revegetation measures were necessary to fully restore the riparian corridor. The Brizzolara Creek Revegetation and Restoration plan was implemented in winter 2011. The plant palette was composed of early successional native species including Salix lasiolepis, Salix laevigata, Populus balsamifera spp. trichocarpa, Rubus ursinus, Rhamnus californica, Baccharis pilularis, Sambucus mexicana, and Artemisia douglasiana. A monitoring plan will evaluate the relative success of this project in Spring 2014. The final success criteria for this …
Technical Note: Feeding Zilpaterol Hydrochloride To Calf-Fed Holstein Steers Improves Muscle Conformation Of Top Loin Steaks, T. E. Lawrence, D. M. Allen, R. J. Delmore, J. L. Beckett, W. T. Nichols, M. N. Streeter, D. A. Yates, J. P. Hutcheson
Technical Note: Feeding Zilpaterol Hydrochloride To Calf-Fed Holstein Steers Improves Muscle Conformation Of Top Loin Steaks, T. E. Lawrence, D. M. Allen, R. J. Delmore, J. L. Beckett, W. T. Nichols, M. N. Streeter, D. A. Yates, J. P. Hutcheson
Animal Science
The objective of this research was to evaluate changes in the muscle conformation of subprimal top-loins (M. longissimus lumborum) from calf-fed Holstein steers fed zilpaterol hydrochloride (ZH). Top-loins (n =100) were transversely cut into 2.54 cm-thick steaks, weighed, and objectively evaluated via image analysis software for muscle area, width, and length traits. Top-loin steaks from steers fed ZH were heavier (P < 0.01; 367 vs. 337 g) and average muscle area per steak was greater (P < 0.05; 80.9 vs. 77.2 cm2) as compared to steaks from control steers. Muscle width (medial–lateral) was not different (P = 0.23) between control steers and those fed ZH. However, steaks from steers fed ZH had greater (P < 0.05) depth (dorsal–ventral) than steaks from control steers throughout the top-loin. The increased muscle depth of top-loins from calf-fed Holstein steers fed ZH may improve the center-of-the-plate salability of a cut that has traditionally suffered from poor muscling.

Growing The Urban Ecosystem In Detroit, Michigan, Sean Basalyga
Growing The Urban Ecosystem In Detroit, Michigan, Sean Basalyga
Social Sciences
Many views of the future are seen as bleak and devoid of the life where once stood beauty and abundance. However, the Living Cities Design Competition challenges these views and calls for a vision of the future that inspires hope, biodiversity, and a healthy interaction between human and natural systems. We chose to redesign the city of Detroit, Michigan to be a living city by the year 2035. As the earth scientist on an interdisciplinary team, I acted as an ecological consultant. By developing the urban ecosystem of Detroit, a number of social, economical, and environmental problems can be solved. …

Migration Models - Comparison Of Pvc, Pet And Pla Diffusivity, Combined With A Production Cost Model For Westridge Laboratories, Shelley Cooke, Sarina Surrette
Migration Models - Comparison Of Pvc, Pet And Pla Diffusivity, Combined With A Production Cost Model For Westridge Laboratories, Shelley Cooke, Sarina Surrette
Materials Engineering
This project has two parts: [1] a migration and diffusivity model for candidate plastics used in containers, and [2] a product cost model for Westridge Laboratories (Santa Ana, CA).
Diffusion modeling is a useful tool to predict migration of polymer constituents into exposed liquids. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polylactic acid (PLA) were studied to estimate production costs, and component migration into water-based liquids from plastic containers. Bis (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), antimony trioxide, and stannous octoate, are components of concern in the three candidate polymers, respectively. Normal detection limits for these constituents are about 1 - 10 ppb, …
Soil Survey Report For Saucelito Canyon Vineyard Proposed Vineyard Site, Thomas E. Richardson, Ryan S. Stirm
Soil Survey Report For Saucelito Canyon Vineyard Proposed Vineyard Site, Thomas E. Richardson, Ryan S. Stirm
Earth and Soil Sciences
The Saucelito Canyon Vineyard ranch future vineyard site was investigated using eighteen (18) soil pits to document soil morphological properties including soil structure, color, depth, presence of carbonates, and soil chemical characteristics. Pits were also used to obtain soil samples that were delivered to A & L Western Agriculture Laboratories for further soil chemical analysis and to classify the soils.
This collective information was used to classify the soils into five (5) different soil series using Soil Taxonomy. The surface soil textures and slope phases for these soil series were then used to group similar soil types located throughout the …

Black Magic And White Guilt: Voodoo In Angel Heart, Douglas Keesey
Black Magic And White Guilt: Voodoo In Angel Heart, Douglas Keesey
English
On first viewing, Alan Parker’s 1987 film Angel Heart may seem like just another in a long line of films that equate voodoo with Satanism, blacks with the black arts. However, the film also struggles toward an acknowledgment of white guilt, an admission that evil resides within the self. Evil’s repression and projection onto the “black other” must be understood as a defensive strategy for denying one’s own guilt. The difference between good whites and bad blacks must be redefined as a difference within, the capacity for good and evil inherent in each of us, regardless of skin color or …
