Effect Of Food Availability On Social Behavior In A Captive Group Of Bonobos (Pan Paniscus), Alyssa Semerdjian Feb 2012

Effect Of Food Availability On Social Behavior In A Captive Group Of Bonobos (Pan Paniscus), Alyssa Semerdjian

Biological Sciences

Bonobos (Pan paniscus) tend to have low frequencies of aggression due to a suite of affiliative behaviors that are thought to relieve group tensions. A few of these possible behaviors are grooming, sociosexual activities, and strategic positioning in regards to proximity with other individuals at food sites, where most aggression occurs. This observational study sought to determine whether captive bonobos exhibit certain social behaviors at different rates, and have differing proximity preferences in regards to other individuals, when food was and was not available. Results show that when food was available, the apes were less affiliative with fewer …

Camera Survey Of Wildlife Corridors Adjacent To Highway 101, Grace K. Mannell, Chelsea E. Rose Feb 2012

Camera Survey Of Wildlife Corridors Adjacent To Highway 101, Grace K. Mannell, Chelsea E. Rose

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Driving poses a significant threat to safety for both humans and wildlife. Along highway 101 in San Luis Obispo, California, is a stretch of roadway that is exceptionally deadly to mammals such as deer and bears. Roadkill counts and motion-activated cameras have been utilized along this route in a previous study (Perrine and Snyder, 2011) to assist Caltrans in setting up wildlife barriers. We sought to continue this research using remote motion-sensing cameras to monitor wildlife during winter and spring of 2011. We set up cameras at five previously monitored locations that had already been determined to host heavy wildlife …

Does Lack Of Enrichment Invalidate Scientific Data Obtained From Rodents By Compromising Their Welfare?, Ann L. Baldwin Phd Jan 2012

Does Lack Of Enrichment Invalidate Scientific Data Obtained From Rodents By Compromising Their Welfare?, Ann L. Baldwin Phd

Between the Species

In countries where major animal research is conducted, comprehensive laws exist to ensure that the animals’ physical needs are satisfactorily met. However, animals also require an environment that allows them to fulfill their behavioral needs; this will be the focus of the article. Two studies are described in detail, one on rats and the other on genetically modified mice, which were performed by the author to compare the effects of enriched and un-enriched cage environments on rodent physiology. Evidence is presented showing that if research rodents are housed in cages lacking structures that allow them to perform their normal behaviors, …

Experimentally Altered Navigational Demands Induce Changes In The Cortical Forebrain Of Free-Ranging Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes (Crotalus O. Oreganus), Matthew L. Holding, Julius A. Frazier, Emily N. Taylor, Christine R. Strand Jan 2012

Experimentally Altered Navigational Demands Induce Changes In The Cortical Forebrain Of Free-Ranging Northern Pacific Rattlesnakes (Crotalus O. Oreganus), Matthew L. Holding, Julius A. Frazier, Emily N. Taylor, Christine R. Strand

Biological Sciences

The hippocampus of birds and mammals plays a crucial role in spatial memory and navigation. The hippocampus exhibits plasticity in adulthood in response to diverse environmental factors associated with spatial demands placed on an animal. The medial and dorsal cortices of the telencephalon of squamate reptiles have been implicated as functional homologues to the hippocampus. This study sought to experimentally manipulate the navigational demands placed on free-ranging northern Pacific rattlesnakes (Crotalus o. oreganus) to provide direct evidence of the relationship between spatial demands and neuroplasticity in the cortical telencephalon of the squamate brain. Adult male rattlesnakes were radio-tracked for 2 …

A Comparative Study Of Botryllid Tunicates Regeneration In The San Francisco Bay, Michelle Wray, C. Sarah Cohen Jan 2012

A Comparative Study Of Botryllid Tunicates Regeneration In The San Francisco Bay, Michelle Wray, C. Sarah Cohen

STAR Program Research Presentations

Regeneration of body parts is a remarkable phenomenon that is shared by phylogenetically diverse organisms, including some chordates. Lizards can regenerate their tails and sea stars their arms when injured by predators. Humans can even regenerate small portions of the liver. However, colonial botryllid tunicates, basal chordates, have the incredible ability to regenerate the entire functioning body (zooids) from only a small sample of vasculature in a process called vascular budding. Regeneration processes for various botryllid species show some characteristic features in laboratory studies using application of retinoic acid as a developmental initiator. The three botryllid species, Botrylloides violaceus (n …

Informing Drug Design: Human Acetylcholinesterase Response To Organophosphate Poisoning, Aiyana Emigh, Sebnem Essiz-Gokhan, Brian Bennion Jan 2012

Informing Drug Design: Human Acetylcholinesterase Response To Organophosphate Poisoning, Aiyana Emigh, Sebnem Essiz-Gokhan, Brian Bennion

STAR Program Research Presentations

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is target enzyme of organophosphate (OP). Curent treatments for OP poisoning i.e. oximes, have limited success, especially without pre-treatment. This study uses molecular dynamic analysis to shine light on structure and dynamical fluctuations of free AChE and OP-inhibited AChE. Knowledge gained by the study of OP inhibition of acetylocholinesterase should guide future drug designs of more effective antitoxins.

Soil Mapping On A Swanton Pacific Ranch Rangeland, Thomas N. Witman Jan 2012

Soil Mapping On A Swanton Pacific Ranch Rangeland, Thomas N. Witman

Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences

Knowledge of soils has become very important in most land based enterprises. The understanding of soils is necessary for all different types of land management projects. The USDA mapped all of the soils in the United States starting in the late 1950’s to provide the necessary information. However because the mappers often times had to map entire counties in short amounts of time ,did not have modern technology, and had rather a vague operating procedure, there was no way to be accurate on the small scaled. To solve this problem I evaluated Dr. Ron Taskey’s landscape hierarchy, a method that …

The Discovery Of Insulin: A Case Study Of Scientific Methodology, William D. Stansfield Jan 2012

The Discovery Of Insulin: A Case Study Of Scientific Methodology, William D. Stansfield

Biological Sciences

The nature of scientific research sometimes involves a trial-and-error procedure. Popular reviews of successful results from this approach often sanitize the story by omitting unsuccessful trials, thus painting the rosy impression that research simply follows a direct route from hypothesis to experiment to scientific discovery. The discovery of insulin is a classical case study in this genre that begs for an explanation to our students because it is so often ignored or misrepresented even in biology and physiology textbooks.

Gender, Ethnic Identity, And Environmental Concern In Asian Americans And European Americans, Shawn M. Burn, Patricia L. Winter, Brittany Hori, N. Clayton Silver Jan 2012

Gender, Ethnic Identity, And Environmental Concern In Asian Americans And European Americans, Shawn M. Burn, Patricia L. Winter, Brittany Hori, N. Clayton Silver

Psychology and Child Development

There are relatively few articles in sociology and psychology on gender; ethnicity, and the environment, yet ethnic and gender neutral approaches to sustainability may be incomplete. We studied gender, ethnicity and environmental concern ·with an internet sample of Asian American women (n=157) and men (n=69), and European American women (n=222) and men (n=99). Participants completed the New Ecological Paradigm measure (NEP; Dunlap et al., 2000), the value bases of environmental concern (Schultz, 2000), and the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure-Revised (MEIMR; Phinney & Ong, 2007). A 2 ( ethnicity) x 2 (gender) ANOVA found no gender or ethnic differences on the …

Why Animal Ethics Committees Don't Work, Denise Russell Dec 2011

Why Animal Ethics Committees Don't Work, Denise Russell

Between the Species

Abstract

Animal ethics committees have been set up in many countries as a way to scrutinize animal experimentation and to assure the public that if animals are used in research then it is for a worthwhile cause and suffering is kept to a minimum. The ideals of Refinement, Reduction and Replacement are commonly upheld. However while refinement and reduction receive much attention in animal ethics committees the replacement of animals is much more difficult to incorporate into the committees’ deliberations. At least in Australia there are certain structural reasons for this but it is likely that most of the reasons …

Telling It Like It Is: A Proposal To Improve Transparency In Biomedical Research, John Hadley Dec 2011

Telling It Like It Is: A Proposal To Improve Transparency In Biomedical Research, John Hadley

Between the Species

Recent proposals to improve public communication about animal-based biomedical research have been narrowly focused on reforming biomedical journal submission guidelines. My suggestion for communication reform is broader in scope reaching beyond the research community to healthcare communicators and ultimately the general public. The suggestion is for researchers to provide journalists and public relations practitioners with concise summaries of their ‘animal use data’. Animal use data is collected by researchers and intended for the public record but is rarely, if ever, given significant media exposure. By providing healthcare communicators with specific details about their animal use, researchers can play a role …
