Comparing Suffering Across Species, John Nolt
Comparing Suffering Across Species, John Nolt
Between the Species
Moral life often presents us with trade-offs between the sufferings of some individuals and the sufferings of others. Researchers may need to consider, for example, whether the suffering imposed on animals by a certain line of medical experimentation justifies the relief that the resulting discoveries may bring to (human or non-human) others. Often in such cases, the suffering of some individuals is incomparable with—that is neither greater than nor less than nor equal to—the suffering of others. While this complicates moral decision-making across species, it does not undermine it.
Towards A Coherent Theory Of Animal Equality, Stijn Bruers
Towards A Coherent Theory Of Animal Equality, Stijn Bruers
Between the Species
In this article I want to construct in a simple and systematic way an ethical theory of animal equality. The goal is a consistent theory, containing a set of clear and coherent universalized ethical principles that best fits our strongest moral intuitions in all possible morally relevant situations that we can think of, without too many arbitrary elements. I demonstrate that impartiality with a level of risk aversion and empathy with a need for efficiency are two different approaches that both result in the same consequentialist principle of prioritarianism. Next, I discuss that this principle can be trumped by an …

Genetic Diversity And Population Parameters Of Sea Otters, Enhydra Lutris, Before Fur Trade Extirpation From 1741–1911, Shawn Larson, Ron Jameson, Michael Etnier, Terry L. Jones, Roberta Hall
Social Sciences
All existing sea otter, Enhydra lutris, populations have suffered at least one historic population bottleneck stemming from the fur trade extirpations of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. We examined genetic variation, gene flow, and population structure at five microsatellite loci in samples from five pre-fur trade populations throughout the sea otter’s historical range: California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and Russia. We then compared those values to genetic diversity and population structure found within five modern sea otter populations throughout their current range: California, Prince William Sound, Amchitka Island, Southeast Alaska and Washington. We found twice the genetic diversity in the pre-fur …

Toward A More Phronetic Leisure Science, Daniel Dustin, Keri Schwab, Jeff Rose
Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration
In this essay, we examine the assumptions underlying natural science, social science, and the humanities. More specifically, we suggest that social science in general and leisure science in particular be guided by a different set of assumptions than those guiding natural science and the humanities. Drawing on the Aristotelian idea of phronesis, we propose that value rationality more so than instrumental rationality guide social scientific inquiry, and that social science in general, and leisure science in particular, be viewed as a bridge between natural science and the humanities.

As dairy herd sizes increase, dairymen often initiate systematic breeding programs on their dairy in order to improve their reproduction efficiency. The objective of this study, compares systematic breeding program by comparing reproductive efficiency between two systematic breeding programs Target Breeding (January 1, 2008 to May 31,2009) and Presynchronization (Presynch) Program (January 1, 2010 to May 31, 2011) at a large central valley dairy. The traditional Target Breeding program is a systematic breeding program that is solely prostaglandin (PGF2α) based. The more modern Presynch programs includes both Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone (GnRH) and PGF2α, that allows for …

Abstract
The objective of this project was to determine if increased stress levels could affect morbidity and mortality rates in calves. The source for this study was a group of 132 calves at the Cal Poly Dairy available for observation. For each test day, calves were scored on a scale of 1-3 based on how stressed the calf was. After all the data were collected, relationships between age, sex, breed, and observation day were determined in SAS using a Proc Probit method. The effects of breed and sex were not significant in the analysis. However, one of the observation days …
