Wifi Gate Guard: A Captive Portal Implementation For Home Networks, Ben Blumenberg
Wifi Gate Guard: A Captive Portal Implementation For Home Networks, Ben Blumenberg
Computer Science and Software Engineering
WiFi Gate Guard aims to improve the user experience for authentication on home wireless networks, by alleviating some of the hardships causes by passwords and by offering a platform on which further security enhancements could be built. It accomplishes this by using captive portal technology, making it extremely easy for guests to authenticate without needing to ask for a password. Home network administrators can approve or deny access using a simple iOS app. WiFi Gate Guard is built to run on basic home routers, with minimal other hardware requirements. Once it’s up and running, passwords never need to be used …
Self-Administering Pediatric Vital System, Matthew Rochford, Ryan Brown
Self-Administering Pediatric Vital System, Matthew Rochford, Ryan Brown
Electrical Engineering
The objective of this project is to create a device for pediatric divisions in hospitals to improve gathering vital signs of their patients by incorporating biometric sensors into a stuffed animal. Children tend to be extremely difficult patients because they are scared of being in a hospital, being sick, and feeling unsafe. Giving a child a stuffed animal that acts as a medium for both comforting the child and taking vitals not only frees up doctors and nurses but gives the child something safe in a foreign world.
Currently on the market there are similar devices but they do not …
Integrated Computer Science Unit For Early Exposure To A Diverse Population, Di Hoang
Integrated Computer Science Unit For Early Exposure To A Diverse Population, Di Hoang
Master's Theses
Reports from major tech companies, such as Airbnb, Facebook, Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Yahoo, indicate that gender diversity and ethnic diversity are lacking in the tech industry [22]. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projected a 24% increase in the number of software development positions (roughly an increase of 300,000 jobs) between 2016 and 2026 [64]. The main motivation behind this thesis is to expose computer science to young children and encourage teachers to include computer science in their classrooms in the hope of contributing to the current effort of increasing diversity within tech fields in the next decade.

Hands-On Activities To Increase Student Engagement In Undergraduate Structural Dynamics Course, Chad D. Facciolo, Anahid A. Behrouzi
Hands-On Activities To Increase Student Engagement In Undergraduate Structural Dynamics Course, Chad D. Facciolo, Anahid A. Behrouzi
Architectural Engineering
This report documents the design and implementation of several physical models and hands-on lab activities incorporated in an undergraduate structural dynamics lecture and laboratory course pairing offered at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in the Architectural Engineering department during the Winter 2018 quarter. In previous quarters, the laboratory course has lacked opportunities for students to conduct their own physical experiments and has consisted primarily of MATLAB programming activities. Efforts to illustrate the dynamic behavior of various structures have primarily involved instructor demonstrations or online videos.
The addition of physical models in the Winter 2018 offering promotes an engaging …

Poly Canyon Observation Deck, Jordan H. Morofsky
Construction Management
The Poly Canyon Observation Deck is a project that I have been moving through preconstruction for the past year. It started as a solo project but quickly evolved into an interdisciplinary project involving two architectural engineers and myself. Together we developed a project proposal that we presented to Cal Poly Facilities along with our building permit application. They have approved our proposal and have awarded us a provisional building permit which will be approved after they review the 100% construction documents. We have been working the past two quarters to finalize the design, select materials, and perform a complete structural …

Promoting Healthy Food Preferences From The Start: A Narrative Review Of Food Preference Learning From The Prenatal Period Through Early Childhood, S. Anzman-Frasca, Alison K. Ventura, S. Ehrenberg, K. P. Myers
Promoting Healthy Food Preferences From The Start: A Narrative Review Of Food Preference Learning From The Prenatal Period Through Early Childhood, S. Anzman-Frasca, Alison K. Ventura, S. Ehrenberg, K. P. Myers
Kinesiology and Public Health
The palatable, energy-dense foods that characterize modern environments can promote unhealthy eating habits, along with humans’ predispositions to accept sweet tastes and reject those that are sour or bitter. Yet food preferences are malleable, and examining food preference learning during early life can highlight ways to promote acceptance of healthier foods. This narrative review describes research from the past 10 years focused on food preference learning from the prenatal period through early childhood (ages 2–5 years). Exposure to a variety of healthy foods from the start, including during the prenatal period, early milk-feeding and the introduction to complementary foods and …
Detecting Speakers In Video Footage, Michael Williams
Detecting Speakers In Video Footage, Michael Williams
Master's Theses
Facial recognition is a powerful tool for identifying people visually. Yet, when the end goal is more specific than merely identifying the person in a picture problems can arise. Speaker identification is one such task which expects more predictive power out of a facial recognition system than can be provided on its own. Speaker identification is the task of identifying who is speaking in video not simply who is present in the video. This extra requirement introduces numerous false positives into the facial recognition system largely due to one main scenario. The person speaking is not on camera. This paper …

From Downtown To The Inner Harbor: Baltimore's Sustainable Revitalization - Part 2: The Inner Harbor Plan (1967 To 2005), Vicente Del Rio
Focus
Baltimore's effective revitalization efforts are internationally recognized in planning and urban design. After the successful Charles Center redevelopment plan in the late 1950s, Baltimore's efforts expanded to its Inner Harbor and waterfront. In this sequel to a two-part article that started in FOCUS 13, Vicente del Rio discusses these later efforts, and how Baltimore ensured a process for sustainable economic, social, and cultural revitalization.
Evaluating Recruitment Seasonality Of Red Abalone (Haliotis Rufescens) To Inform Fisheries Management And Conservation Policy, Leslie Hart
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Understanding the seasonality of red abalone recruitment (larval settlement) and the relationship between recruitment and oceanographic conditions is critical for managing this economically important species. Red abalone, Haliotis rufescens, were historically part of a recreational and commercial fishery in southern and central California until overharvesting and disease rapidly decreased populations. Recruitment dynamics of red abalone are poorly understood. Previous research conducted at a central California site, Hopkins Marine Life Refuge (HMLR), from 2012-2015 reveal remarkably consistent recruitment rates of red abalone, while northern California recruitment greatly fluctuated within the same time period. To address this gap in our knowledge, I …
“What Were You Wearing?”: Victimization Of Sexual Assault Victims At Cal Poly, Joanna Birns
“What Were You Wearing?”: Victimization Of Sexual Assault Victims At Cal Poly, Joanna Birns
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper will argue that Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo place greater blame and responsibility on women victims of sexual assault than their perpetrators. Sexual assault and sexual assault prevention methods in local media will be examined, as will three recent Title IX cases of Cal Poly students. Placing abundant blame and responsibility on the victims of sexual assault creates a culture of victimization, which discourages victims from reporting their sexual assaults. Although this paper does not offer up suggestions of how we can better Cal Poly’s approach to sexual assault, it hopes to spark a conversation about improving …
Ag Buddies: Making Connections With Agriculture Leaders And Elementary Youth, Lacee Holloway, Rachel Dewar, Mickey Guerra, Chantal Herrera
Ag Buddies: Making Connections With Agriculture Leaders And Elementary Youth, Lacee Holloway, Rachel Dewar, Mickey Guerra, Chantal Herrera
Agricultural Education and Communication
The author Bill McBean defines being a leader as, “exhibiting moral and ethical courage and setting an example for everyone.” Leadership begins at an early age and demonstrating the right way to lead and how to teach others should be instilled in a child when they are young enough to develop the right tools for success. Future Farmers of America and the agriculture programs that it is integrated into are prime examples of what being a leader inhibits. The National FFA Organization states that, “they taught us that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting — it's a science, it's …

Employee training is vital to any company and essential for an organization’s success (UMA S. N, 2013). Job training is defined as the process of enhancing the skills, capabilities and knowledge of employees doing a particular job (Schappel, 2016). Regarding job training, 76% of employees have reported this type of training is most important when obtaining a new job (Schappel, 2016). Not only is training desired amongst employees but it also improves morale of employees, decreases the need for employee supervision, increases chances of promotions, and increases employee productivity (UMA S. N, 2013). One training opportunity that companies utilize is …
Lessons On Evolution From The Study Of Edaphic Specialization, Nishanta Rajakaruna
Lessons On Evolution From The Study Of Edaphic Specialization, Nishanta Rajakaruna
Biological Sciences
Plants adapted to special soil types are ideal for investigating evolutionary processes, including maintenance of intraspecific variation, adaptation, reproductive isolation, ecotypic differentiation, and the tempo and mode of speciation. Common garden and reciprocal transplant approaches show that both local adaptation and phenotypic plasticity contribute to edaphic (soil-related) specialization. Edaphic specialists evolve rapidly and repeatedly in some lineages, offering opportunities to investigate parallel evolution, a process less commonly documented in plants than in animals. Adaptations to soil features are often under the control of major genes and they frequently have direct or indirect effects on genes that contribute to reproductive isolation. …
Cal Poly: A Shift From State Dependence To Donor Dependence Over The Course Of Three University Presidents, David Vacchio
Cal Poly: A Shift From State Dependence To Donor Dependence Over The Course Of Three University Presidents, David Vacchio
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
Cal Poly’s period of financial uncertainty under McPhee during the Great Depression led to an expanded effort between the school and the state to find alternative ways of funding the school, and gradually began to lean towards a system less involved with the state due to its budget restrictions and laws preventing it from loaning its credit. The creation of the Cal Poly Foundation in 1940 was an important step in distancing the school from the jungle of state regulations, but McPhee had to consistently struggle with the law for the right for Cal Poly to use the Foundation due …
Biophilia: Alienation And Solidarity, Ralph Acampora
Biophilia: Alienation And Solidarity, Ralph Acampora
Between the Species
Biophilia, theorized by Fromm, Wilson, and Kellert, is examined as a potential support for a pro-animal ethos. First, I look at the idea and its definitions at the hands of its chief theorizers. Then I investigate how different stages of human cultural development (foraging, pastoralism, industrial agriculture) have influenced different aspects of biophilia—especially as this bears on animal alienation. Finally, I consider possible remedies in the form of renewed patterns of solidarity with other species, one of which transforms Marx’ concept of species-being. The article has ethical implications, but it is essentially a work in philosophical anthropology.

The Impacts Of Sex And Myogenic Cell Transplantation On Collateral Capillary Arteriogenesis, Padon Mary Sivesind
The Impacts Of Sex And Myogenic Cell Transplantation On Collateral Capillary Arteriogenesis, Padon Mary Sivesind
Master's Theses
Current treatments for peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) have limited success, so there is a need to develop more effective treatments. Because patients with native collaterals have a better prognosis, promoting collateral arteriogenesis is a potential PAOD treatment. Additionally, female PAOD patients have a worse response to treatment and a worse prognosis compared to males, which could be due to impaired collateralization. Cell transplantation is a potential treatment option to promote collateral arteriogenesis. Bone marrow derived stem cells are the main cell type that has been investigated, but they have had limited clinical success. Delivering a stem cell type native …

Cal Poly Rose Float Overheight Mechanism, Ali A. Harake, Breanna H. Tran, Morgan K. Montalvo, Sergio B. Gutierrez
Mechanical Engineering
The Cal Poly Universities jointly build and enter a floral entry, commonly known as a float, into the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Rose Parade. At the end of this parade route, there is a 16’6” bridge all floats must drive under. The scope of our project is to design and build a mechanism roughly described as an “overheight” mechanism, as its function is to raise and lower large heavy structures so the float is able to pass under the bridge. This hydraulic mechanism is powered via the float animation system.
The Role Of Narratives In Eliciting Strong Audience Response To Emotional Commercials, Brooks Jessica
The Role Of Narratives In Eliciting Strong Audience Response To Emotional Commercials, Brooks Jessica
Communication Studies
Let’s face it; crying during movies will always be a bit embarrassing even if the movie is worthy of shedding tears. But crying during a commercial is almost humiliating. Surprisingly, it happens. Commercials from the last few years have caused that very reaction among some audience members. These commercials, built on emotional appeals, contain narratives that cause the audience—in one to three minutes—to feel like part of the world created by the advertiser or rhetor. In a day and age where it is easy to skip an ad, advertisers are turning to the use of narratives as a way to …

Egg Awareness, Hailee J. French
Egg Awareness, Hailee J. French
Agricultural Education and Communication
In 2008, Proposition 2 passed, forcing all egg producers in California to provide more room inside of cages to their laying hens. The Humane Society of the United States [HSUS] initiated this battle and won but, less than a decade later decided that still wasn’t enough room for the birds. HSUS is now pushing to have a new measure on the ballot in November 2018 forcing all egg producers in California to produce their eggs cage free.
This project will survey the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo campus to gauge the campus’s understanding of egg production in California. …
The Biased Language In Media Commentary At The 2018 Winter Olympic Games, Gabriella Adriana Barattolo
The Biased Language In Media Commentary At The 2018 Winter Olympic Games, Gabriella Adriana Barattolo
Communication Studies
This paper examines the media commentary at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. It focuses on the commentary of five sports: Women’s Snowboarding Halfpipe, Men’s Snowboarding Halfpipe, Individual Figure Skating, Pairs Figure Skating, and Curling. The goal of this paper is to study the language choices that the media commentators made and uncover the gender bias within their language. The differences in how the commentators discuss athletes is significant to understand because it reveals the overall gender bias in sports that is still present in our society today.
