Word Ways
My article "Transposing Rates" in the November 1987 Word Ways has examples for 63 of the 120 possible transposals of the letters AERST. Further research expanded the collection to 85 in "AERST Transposals' (Word Ways, Nov. 2006), with many of the original entries improved as well. Here is an attempt to unclude something for all 120 combinations..

Apodosis Aposiopesis, Max Nelson
Apodosis Aposiopesis, Max Nelson
Word Ways
The apodosis is the consequence of a condition, such as "make lemonade." Aposiopesis is cutting off an expression midway, such as "if life give you lemons…" This quiz combines both. Thus, for example, for "Make Lemonade" the answer would be "If life gives you lemons."

If that bearded nineteenth-century Russian, Dmitri Mendeleev, had turned his attention to the Science of Linguistics, instead of to the pseudo-scientific cult of Alchemy, then rather than merely discovering the Periodic Table of the Elements, he might have been led to invent the following "Periodic Table of the Alphabet."

The Old Palindromical Equations Trick, Jim Puder
Word Ways
Actually, this magician's trick is "old" only in the sense that I worked it out some three decades ago; to my knowledge, it has never been used or published by anyone before now. This is a puzzle with no linguistic elements, but it may nonetheless be of some interest to palindrome-aware Word Ways readers.

The Longest N-Crash Word Lists, A. Ross Eckler
Word Ways
In the November 1978 Word Ways, I introduced the concept of symmetric crash groups - sets of 2k words of 2k-1 letters apiece, in which each pair of words has exactly one crash (same letter in the same position, as E in rovEr and cruEt) and all letters in the set participate in crashes.
